The important point about "Lovehearts" is that they had a message stamped on each one. There would be a mixture of messages in each tube such as "be mine", "always", "cuddle me" and "kiss me" etc.

We used to buy a mix of Fruit Salads and Black Jacks at 4 for a penny. With Half Penny Chews and Penny Chews. The newsagents used to have a display of penny candies spread out in trays on a shelf under glass. So we would spend hours picking out what we would buy with our sixpence pocket money. While the shopkeeper stood behind the counter with a white paper bag in one hand. patiently waiting for us to make up our minds.

If we're going old school then for me: 1) Sherbert lemons. I love the taste of lemon and then you get to the sherbert in the middle which fizzes and bubbles on your tongue. 2) Pear drops. 3) Rhubarb & custards. An honurable mention to lemon bonbons. N.B. Rhubarb is a plant that you'll find in many British gardens. The leaves are poisonous to eat, but the stalks are edible when stewed. It's naturally quite sharp so sugar is added. Great in crumbles and with custard. Mixes well with both apples and blackberries. Stewed rhubarb & custard is a classic British desert and a staple of school dinners,. In Yorkshire there's an area called the Rhubarb triangle, so called because of the mysterious rhubarb related activity that occurs there😮. Or maybe just because it's the centre of commerically grown rhubarb.😀

Cola is not any fizzy soft drink, it's cola specific since it's using the kola but that gives coca-cola it's distinctive flavour. In the UK we'd never refer to mountain dew or similar as cola, they're pops or soft drinks.

Kola cubes are flavoured with the Kola nut, the ingredient that gives the Cola sodas such as Coca~Cola its name.

As a 💯brit I loved cola cubes as a kid in 80s but they are very different now not chewy in middle also pineapple cubes 😅

I am a Parma violet fan. Have a pack on my desk right now in fact. Also, rhubarb and custards are amazing, and pear drops, and blackjacks. Hm. I seem to have a thing for the floral/herby sweets. A lot of these sweets evolved (flavour-wise at least) from the traditional candied flowers (highly scented edible flowers preserved by coating in sugar or caramel, which were ostentatious decorative pieces at medieval feasts used to show off wealth as much as to be delicious).

So something a little confusing to some is the word “sweet “ has a couple of different meanings. One is what you are looking at here and another definition in some parts of the UK is to mean Desserts ( IE cakes etc that you have after a main meal, in other places this is referred to as pudding or Afters and are sometimes interchangeable )

Haribo is a German company, that didn't arrive in the UK until the early 1990s. So I am from the pre-Haribo generation, and never really liked their gummies. I did love milk bottles, barley sugars and humbugs. Bought in "2 ounces" lots weighed out from a knee high glass bottle, in a white paper bag.

This brought back a whole pile of childhood memories of walking home from school, now in my 70’s , what a tease, but I didn’t find anyone share Aniseed Twist, and check out Rhubarb and Custard English candy/sweet , that name rolled off my tongue first 🇨🇦

These all brought back memories! I can't believe nobody mentioned Aniseed Twists! They were very popular back in the day. I think the one we ate the most as kids were the Bonbons, toffee coated in a white, yellow (lemon) or pink (strawberry) sugar dusting. I remember one pulling out a filling! You also had the penny sweets, like the foam bananas and shrimps.

Small pieces of white chocolate, shaped like mice. Hence they are called chocolate mice !! When I was a kid each one cost one pence. I was given a pound by my mum one day and I went to my local sweet shop ( it was a thing,) and bought 100 white mice with my pound. I can still recall the poor man having to count out one hundred of the things. Made myself a bit sick with them all, and it put me off the taste of white chocolate for ages !

I'm really 6 inside, so I've always been fond of fried eggs, and shrimps, and dolly mix. Though Curly Wurly and Black Bullets also good. During the pandemic, the Tunnocks factory closed, because the factory was too small for staff to distance. It was distressing. On the bakewell tart (which you can buy), it's running into the issue that some people in Britain call a dessert a sweet.

Everton Mints, Licorice and Blackcurrant sweets, Chocolate coated caramel chewy toffees. So many. By the way back when I was a youngster the fruit salads and Blackjacks were 4 for a Penny (farthings were still just in use).

Aniseed twists probably my favourite hard boiled sweet. Also we were lucky to have local shops, that carried all types of traditional types of sweets. Best value sure was the fruit salad and/or black jack, at just half pence for 4 back in the mid 1970s. You could get a full bag with your pocket money.

It’s funny that for rhubarb and custard you googled rhubarb the vegetable! Rhubarb and custard is a hard boiled sweet (a glass like texture that either dissolves when you keep sucking it or can be crunched to shatter it and goes chewy in the mouth), it is called Rhubarb and Custard because half of the individual sweet is a yellow colour and half a rhubarb reddish purple colour.

I’ve never been much for sweets, I prefer chocolate. They used to make cola pips which I’d pick at. I liked sherbet - flying saucers, sherbet dipdab (but I never eat the licorice as I can’t stand it!). We have proper old school sweet shop sweets - lots of boiled sweets. A sherbet lemon is nice. My son loves marshmallows, Haribo & maoam chewy stix.. (only as a treat tho!). I don’t consider a tea cake a sweet tho it has Italian marshmallow on it…

There are many local words for sweets in the UK. We moved to Derbyshire in my early teens where the word for sweets is 'spice'

My local amateur drama group did a play set during the black death and I had to play a character right at the start who was suffering from it. At the start of each performance I ate a black jack to make my tongue black as a black tongue was mentioned in the script! lol. Refreshers! I love Refreshers and I am convinced it's because my mum ate so many of them when she was pregnant with me. She worked at the local Trebour factory and got a lot for free, and she found they were the only thing that relieved her heartburn while carrying me, so she ate so many of them that she has forever made herself sick of them, but I absolutely live them!

Rhubarb may be a vegetable (but used like a fruit) it’s like tomatoe is a fruit (but used like a vegetable). Rhubarb is usually bitter & acidic. Most people eat it in a crumble or a pie/tart. It is usually chopped up and cooked with planty of sugar. Rhubarb & custard is a boiled sweet that tastes as the name says rhubarb & custard. It is a sharp/bitter sweet but quite tasty.

If it makes you feel better, I had to Google "Yorkshire mixture" and I've lived in the UK for 50+ years. For me, favourites would be aniseed twists and clove bullseyes. One thing that leads to confusion is that "sweets" can mean both candy and desserts. LOL - I had a general store/sweet shop in the mid '70s and fruit salads and blackjacks were ½p each.

I am 70 years old. All these sweets were what all the kids had when I was a child.The chocolate sweets of today were what adults had. I can remember buying fruit salad sweets….16 for a penny. As inflation hit the number for a penny went down. Nowadays you would have to go to an old fashion sweet shop to buy a lot of these sweets, where they are sold loose. Sweet shops when I was a kid had very large jars of sweets lining the shelves. These were weighed on a scale… you could have 2 ounces of any sweet. Nobody mentioned the gob sucker. This was a large round sweet that you would suck for hours.

As well as candy canes, you could have candied fruits ie fruit covered with sugar. Hard to choose a favourite boiled sweet, but I think mint humbugs might be close to the top of the list. As a kid I loved mojos (liquorice chews) or fruit salad dhews......and loved crunching aniseed balls! If you have a PO Box, maybe some Brits could send you sweets to review? Hi Tyler, You should have looked up 'Rhubarb and Custard candy' its a single type not 2 separate items. Re the Fruit salad/Black jacks, I used to sell these (my school job) , they cost 1 penny (1d) for 8 (you were allowed to mix them) at the change in currency they went up to 8 for 1/2p. How I hated the price increases due to decimalisation.

Peardrops taste like nail varnish smells! I loved chewing nuts!

I’m a bit of a creature of habit where my favourite sweets are concerned, they’ve not really changed since I was a child and I’m now 58. I love anything liquorice or aniseed…liquorice allsorts, liquorice flyers when I can find them, cough candy and a real old fashioned one, army and navy boiled sweets but it’s hard to find those too. I also love refreshers and love hearts, Parma violets, rowntrees fruit gums and butter mints. I’m not a fan of milk chocolate but I do love dark chocolate, my favourite brand being Green and Blacks, particularly if it’s mint flavour. I try not to eat any of them too often 😂

My go-to was always cinder toffee, flying saucers, or rosy apples when I was a kid. The first two are still pretty easy to come by in most supermarkets, but rosy apples are something of a rarity these days outside of specialty old-school sweet shops in my experience. There are about 3 of those shops in the small town I came from, so I tend to pop in whenever I'm visiting my folks and pick up a 1/4 to 1/2 lb of them for myself, a bag of chocolate mice for my mum and a sherbet dibdab for the old man.

Oh my we really are going retro ,The hard boiled sweets were usually weighed out in how much pocket money you had to spend . Gob stoppers , sherbet dibs/dips , flying saucers , black jacks , love hearts or a red jubbly in the summer, does any one remember the chalky sweets on a neckless. You got your moneys worth with a gob stopper it lasted hours wow takes me back . I remember getting tuppence for pocket money , we then went decimal hmmm . This was a nice trip down memory lane .

When I was a boy, fruit salads and blackjacks were 4 for a penny. That's an 'old' penny (or 'real' penny for those of us of a certain vintage) back when there were 12 pence made a shilling and 20 shillings made a pound--so you could (if you were rich enough) get 480 fruit salads or blackjacks for a pound! Favourites in my area were chewits and penny arrow bars (can you guess how much the latter cost?) which were produced in the Holland Toffee factory in my home town of Southport. As a seaside resort town, virtually everybody knew someone who worked there at least 'out of season' so there was always a plentiful supply to be had of rejects and misshapes that had by means legal or otherwise made there way out of the factory. Both my father and grandmother worked there from time to time and, about 50 years ago, I had an unsuccessful interview as a food technician.

Cola cubes and Pear Drops or similar are loosely Boiled Sweets as a general classification and many of these are things our parents had when there was a limited choice back in the mists of time

Yorkshire Mixtures are Winter Mixtures-my favourite back in the 1980's, other than maybe Salad Gums.

Grew up with all of these sweets in Canada. Grandmother would bring bags or tins whenever she came to visit. Hated the licorice flavoured ones. So strange to think U.S. didn't have these.

Everybody has different sweet favourites at different ages. Generally chocolate is listed separately from sweets, but sweets could be everything from boiled sweets, to toffee, to gums, (not chewing gum, that, like chocolate, is considered separately.) At the moment my favourite sweet is Haribo (brand name) Tangfastic, but I also like Butterscotch, and Barley Sugar, but they are becoming hard to find these days.

Chocolate raisins are a classic cinema (= movie theater) snack. And yes, you can buy packets of Bakewell tarts - but as you said, they're not really sweets.

I love the traditional cough and cold remedy type boiled sweets with their less sweet and interesting tastes e.g. winter warmers; blackcurrant and liquorice; Halls mentho-lyptus (the big extra strong ones not those weak little square ones); army and navy sweets and Uncle Joe's Mint Balls; their throat and chest sweets.

We have something called an American Hard Gum which is my favourite and I guess unknown in the US., We also have something called Coconut Mushrooms, which are made from coconut shaped like a mushroom. Mr Kipling make Bakewell Tarts. I did not known we still made Parma violets. Cannot believe that Jelly Babies and Liquorice all sorts are not on the list.

tunnocks tea cakes are top tier, they also make snowballs which are near enough the same thing but without the biscuit base and have shredded coconut dusted over the chocolate... if you ever get them, put them in the freezer for a few hours and they completely transform what they are

In the uk, we have smarties, but they are small, covered in a hard shell and fruit flavours. I think the ones America has look like our refreshers

my guy. with love and respect - cola is a tree/nut. The drink is flavoured with the nut, it's not a soda flavoured candy lmao. It never before occurred to me that people might only know cola from coca cola lmao.

I have a few favourites, Fruit Salads are my number 1 they are pineapple and raspberry flavoured. I also like Pear Drops, Kola Cubes and Sherbert Lemons. We also have a lot of mint flavoured boiled sweets like Polos, Everton Mints or Mint Humbugs which I love. Polos also do a fruit flavoured variety. There are others thst are more of a chewy sweet like Liquorice Allsorts, Jelly Babies or Maynards Wine Gums. I would Google british sweets a to get a clear view of the massive variety of sweets the UK produces and not a chocolate bar in sight. We do not put chocolate bars in the same category as sweets.

When I was little we used to spend our pocket money on a selection of sweets that were sold 2 or 4 a penny. Black Jacks and Fruit Salad chews were favourites. I liked Floral Gums, Parma Violets, Lovehearts, Refreshers. Shrimps. Sweet Cigarettes and Sweet Tobacco.

Rhubarb is a vegetable that is used as a fruit (like how tomatoes are fruits that are used as vegetables). The stalks are cooked (with a lot of sugar, as its naturaly very sour) to make things like truit pies, crumbles, jam, etc. (Dont eat the leaves - they're poisonous). Its often eaten with custard, hence the rhubarb-and-custard flavoured candies.

I was always into the chocolate tools. Probably terrible chococlate on reflection, but somehow sucking on a spanner or a hammer made it taste better.

We love our sweets one not mentioned were Fizzers Sherbet fountain Sherbet Dip Dab fruit pastilles and fruit gums are some of my favroutes you seemed to get a little confused with the Refreshers the Refreshers chews and bars are completely separate from Refreshersthe tav late style sweet a refreshers chew is lemon flavour with a sherbet filling and are incredibly good that's the original but they also come in Strawberry and sour apple flavour we had loads of great chew bars in England but once Mc Cows was sold to candy land they changed the formula to make them much softer and they just aren't the same anymore. That’s why i love the refreshers chews they haven’t changed. also Sherbet lemons are the best a lemon flavour boiled sweet with sherbet in the centre whats not to like.

Sherbet lemon is a hard boiled lemon sweet (a bit like lemon drops) but it has a sherbet centre. Sherbet is a sweet powder.

Cola/Pineapple cubes are great and was one of my favourites as a kid but the combination of cube corners and hard sugar coating ripped the roof of your mouth to shreds.

Tyler - these sweets were around the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s before all the new Chocolate types came. We've always had KitKat, Marathan (Now Snickers) Smarties etc. You could go to Woolworths store and choose from a pick-and-mix selection. Selecting whichever sweets/candy you liked and you paid by the weight of the sweets. Hope this helps as you are a young lad. I was born in the 70s and so I remember half-pence Mojo sweets. This was my first favourite sweet before I liked Fry's Turkish Delight. Keep up the great content from your average British citizen lol

when i was training in first aid the way we were told to identify some one with low blood sugar was to smell if their breath smelled of pear drops. This is still a good indicator now. my personal favorite old English sweet is blackcurrant liquorice. however items to note sherbert lemons was dumbledors password for his office in the harry potter series of books. also other nice sweets are: kendle mint cake sherbert fountain dibdabs drumbsticks most of the soft liquorice products.

Shout out to all who bought Cola Cubes in the local corner shop by weight, had them in paper bags and took them with you on school trips! Would have these with a bag of Fruit Salad and the Blackberries and Raspberries mix... yum!!

As many have said, the toast needs butter! Marmite is almost like a flavouring for butter, you can spread it on top of the butter, or mix it in (small amount) with the butter on the side of your plate before spreading the mix onto your toast! The latter is my favourite

I used to get 10 pence pocket money each week and could buy blackjacks and fruit salads for 1/2 pence each. Personally I love Jelly Beans but struggle to type I could get when growing up. Today you can get the american version, which have some horrible flavours. I used to like the ones made by Haribo before they went "vegan".
