The ground is around 160+ metres by about 90 metres. Marks are paid generally by ball control during the mark. Some players do about 15kms per game. The MCG holds around 100,000 people.

In answer to your question. If a player, whether it be a teammate, or an opponent, gets climbed on or collected in a marking contest, that is viewed as part of the game. Taking a high mark over an opponent is not viewed as a sign of disrespect, but rather superior positioning and skill.

Jeremy Howe, the guy wearing 38 for Melbourne & Collingwood in a few clips, was taking those kinds of marks on a weekly basis back in 2012. Every week he'd get a nomination for mark of the week and I believe that the mark of the year award came down to two of his marks and another player IIRC.

I love the question about the crowd. 20,000 would be a disappointing attendance, even a failure. Depending on where it is and the teams playing, but otherwise, it would have to be really shit weather (raining and hailing), or a bad time slot by the AFL. The average attendance at the MCG pre covid was 53,000. Total attendance for 2019 (just the Melbourne Cricket Ground) was 2,416,223 with 45 games. I've been to several games between 65 and 80 odd thousand. Never been to a Grand Final. Record Grand Final Crowd is 121,696 in 1970, Carlton vs Collingwood. Now consider that Melbourne's population alone in 1970 was 2.5M, it is now 5.235M. Truly amazing.

As a 14 yr old, I was at that grand final in 1970, the record crowd for a game of Aussie Footy at over 121,000 people! The atmosphere was incredible and the game is remembered for its famous comeback of Carlton who were 44 points behind at half time against Collingwood! Unheard of before that game! The tactics used in that comeback were innovative at the time and are credited with the birth of modern AFL footy! ... Due to modern health regulations, less standing room and the introduction of corporate boxes, the capacity of our largest ground, the MCG, has now been reduced to about 100,000, so that record will stand for the time being! Though, with popular teams, we probably could get over 200,000 there for the GF if the capacity allowed!

It’s really funny. I watch a lot of US sports and the concept of disrespect comes up a lot. It really isn’t a think or talked about in Australian sport. Yes it is like getting dunked on but you will never see a player get up after taking a mark and rub it in the opponents face ( very rarely ). It’s just not the done thing. It’s more likely the person who got marked on will give a little nod of respect to the player who took it on them. Don’t get me wrong if a player misses an easy kick at goal or gets chased down and tackled you would get into them and tell them how they messed up but not in marking contests. It’s a team sport and showing disrespect to your opponent has a funny way of coming back and biting you into he ass. In local football there is no tv cameras either so in the same way you behave yourself in a pickup game of street ball you would in afl or your might find yourself knocked out.
@RealFansSports

Yeah it could just be a difference of culture. I personally have trash talked after making a big play in sport and it has resulted in consequences at times lol. but for us it is part of the game. But we are definitely all for the idea of game respects game and you respect the opponent that goes out and makes a big play. youll see that in American sports as well, where they will get dunked on and post game will say it was an amazing play. I also think we use the word disrespectful in this case like how we would say "thats a nasty play" but it really means "that was a great play." if that makes any sense lol

Sometimes you know it's coming and there's nothing you can do about it. Lol. It's like getting posterised in the NBA. They're running machines. Players avg 9-10 miles per game. Great reaction boys. Keep it up!

Thank you for checking out the video and leaving a comment as well. That is interesting to know that they do practice it too, I think that would be interesting to see honestly. Most marks, 99.9% of the time, are clean catches... but the rule is the player has to have 'controlled' the ball (for a sufficient length of time). This is sometimes a judgement call for the umpire and can therefore be a matter of contention (a couple in this vid are pretty iffy in my opinion, e.g.15:48, you can hear the commentators debating about it). So if a player takes a catch, but it pops out when they hit the deck from 10 feet up, for instance, it can sometimes still count. Think of it as the umpire has already awarded the mark when the catch was controlled for a sufficient time and what happens after that is irrelevant. This flexibility rewards and encourages taking the risk with these big spectacular marks. Speccies are really seen as the most exciting play in Aussie Rules, which is why the 'no contact above the shoulder' rule is completely ignored if a successful speccie has been taken.
@RealFansSports
@RealFansSports Жыл бұрын
Ahh ok that makes sense! We were curious since some were obviously caught and other almost looked liked it was just batted down. But I actually like how they will reward a crazy mark even if it isn’t fully caught to encourage the crazy athleticism. What is a speccie exactly?
@user-bf8ud9vt5b
@user-bf8ud9vt5b Жыл бұрын
@@RealFansSports Speccie (or speckie, speccy etc.) is Aussie slang for spectacular, i.e. a spectacular mark. It's the most common term for these high leaping catches. But they are also called a 'hanger' or a 'screamer'. I think you even noticed one of the commentators use the latter term. :)

These guys were renowned for high flying marks (catches). There is a song called "Up there Cazaly" about a Fitzroy player called Roy Cazaly. The song is not about Cazaly but really about the fans shouting support out to the players they like. I am not an Adelaide Crows fan, but when Tony Modra would take a screamer, I couldn't help but shout out "Modra!" I really h*8 the Crows. If the player taking the mark has control of the ball at some time , say 2 seconds , its called a mark . Doesn't matter if it spills as he lands , he still had control at some time. For instance the " mark" that Garry ablett Snr took against Collingwood wasnt really a mark , but the umpire couldnt really see it spilled and called it . That mark over the goal line by Shultz was actually a goal because he touched it after the ball crossed the line, but for some reason they keep putting it on greatest marks when it wasnt technically a mark. The amazing thing is not many players actually get injured by doing it and its too much fun to ban.

8:48 as long as the ball is controlled in the descent, it is ok for it to jar out on landing, unlike a gridiron completion. AFL also has the “3 touches” rule - touch it 3 times, and it’s a mark - not sure if this is an actual rule, or a received interpretation that is just assumed to be a rule.

You start ‘kick to kick’ on the school oval during recess and lunch from when youre a small kid - multiple balls kicked from one big pack to another. Object is to mark the ball any way you can. By the time you’re playing at local club level its pure instinct. If youre good enough you’ll go first grade comp in your state and maybe into the AFl from there. But this sport probably isnt like amerucan football - you might play it at your local club well into your 40s or even 50s. Not sure if you can do that with american football. We dont have this stupid american concept of ‘disrespect’. Here we respect everyone unless they give us a reason not to, including on the sports field.

Our game isn't as stop start as NFL so when the ball is down play is not dead it's fair game for anyone. When it comes out in marks it's still ruled a mark if they have deemed the player had enough control of the ball but players have leway allowing them to attempt to protect there head etc in an attempt to keep this part of the game as it's exciting and a respected part of the game. Do see how it can be viewed as disrespectful putting your nuts in someone's ear but we kinda just don't care about stuff like that. And they can always tackle you later if they were upset lol. But in the end it's just a game. A fantastic one but still.

Boys, you need to calm the farm with disrespect. No disrespect ever meant at all and Aussie kids practice this no longer after they learn to walk. It's quite the opposite in that we respect anyone who can take a hang like that AND I've been the ladder for a number of blokes taking marks like that during my career.

all your comments are disrespectful to real athletes especially when your famed athletes are cosseted. In cricket, we catch a hard ball without gloves , cos we are good at it , we don't need gloves cos we are not afraid of the ball, similarly we don't need pads to play a rough game , we don't sook when we get hit, we man up and go again . your mirth and ridicule of pure athleticism is very disrespectful!! grow up!!

If you look closely, every one of those players is looking up in the air at the ball coming down. They really only just see players in front of them as step ladders, no time to consider if team mates or opponents. Eye on the ball at all times, same with the players who end up as the ladders, no time to see who's coming from other directions.
