As Americans we sat down and watched the Danish film A Royal Affair - En kongelig affære. Released in 2012 it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Miranda has loved this film since moving to Denmark, but Joshua finally watched it for the first time. See what we think!

"Affair" in danish has 2 meanings. Besides meaning having an affair it also means "business or things/stuff" in the sense of it´s none of your business (stikke næsen i andres affærer) or it could be fishy business depending on context. Both meanings apply to the movie and what happened.

Blinkende lygter, if you ask me. But I don't know how easy it is to find it with English subtitles. Adams æbler is in the same category. De grønne slagtere, i know that one is available with English subtitles. Edit: oh, the latter 2 have Mads as leading roles tho.. but they're not romcom or romantic as such.

I'd highly recommend you to watch 9. April. Its on Amazon video with english subtitles, portaying the few troops who defended sønderjylland 9. April 1940 against the Nazi army. The really great thing about it is how it isnt some overglorified "lets show 'em how well we did" kinda deal, and the costumes and guns are appropiate for the times(they did use a more modern Madsen Machine gun in the movie tho)

Rejseholdet (Unit 1) would be a real classic. It is based on sone of the most notible and extreme murder cases in Denmark and the actual work of the travelling crime unit (closest equivalent would be the FBI I guess), although dramatized. And yes, Mads Mikkelsen is in it but it's practically impossible to find something he is NOT in, from the past 20 years ;) Italiensk for begyndere (Italien 101) and Den eneste Ene (The one and only) are newer Danish comedies, semi-dogma style. Very popular and sort of Iconic along with Blinkende Lygter (Flickering Lights). Lighthearted but with that famous Danish snickering sarcasm running through it.

Hey guys! I recommend that you watch some of the old classic Danish films, especially to see some Danish landscapes, architecture and so on. I would recommend "støv på hjernen" ("dust on the brain" is a rough translation). It's a movie series of four films, but you can easily just see the first one. In the film you get to see how a Danish apartment complex looked like in the 60ties. its a satire comedy and fetures many great danish actores at that time. Dirch Passer is to mention and maybe afterwards you could see the movie "Dirch" from 2011 which is about him and his life.

If you want classical Danish films, I have a couple of suggestions: Mød mig på Cassiopeia. This was called "en operettefilm", because the word "musical" had not yet entered the Danish language. Harry og kammertjeneren. Very Danish. Nominated for an Oscar. Both are black and white. And of course there are the Olsen banden films.

The Christiansborg that stands today is only 100+ years old. The Christiansborg that the movie was trying to portrait burned down in 1795. It was so extravagant, big and expensive, that it wasn’t even fully furnished at the time it burned down.(some 60 years after it was built) The king who built the castle wanted to exceed the Versailles castle, so unlike the current Christiansborg, no expenses were kept. Also there have been much destruction in Copenhagen since the era of Struensee and King Christian VII, with both the enormous and very destructive fire in 1795 and the terror attack from the Brits in 1807. So the city is unfortunately not what it once was, that is one of the reasons why they did it in the Czech Rep. Thank you for the video

I think it was Struense that arranged the present much disputed "Store Bededag", by collecting several smaller "Prayer Days" into one day, and which is now about budget sawing's for the benefit of the Danish Army, needing more weapons! To be able to avoid a war with Putins Russia! But many Danes won't let it go.

Most of "The royal affair" is happening in Hørsholm - 10 minute drive from Lyngby. The castle isn't there anymore, but if you look at the church and located off the end of the walking street, you'll notice that it has a ditch around it. That is where the castle was located, and where most of the story is happening (the old Hirchholm castle - some say it was the Nordic Versailles). The nature around that area actually corresponds pretty accurately to what's in the movie. It's a pitty that castle was burned down though. From the old pictures and paintings I've seen it looked pretty awesome...

I think Denmark is the second most proficient in English as a non native speaker in the world, only superseded by the Dutch. Weird that there isn’t any English dub. Might be a collected conscious decision. There are many recurring actors in Danish movies. I don’t think it’s because of shortage, dunno if its an unwritten tradition from the 60-80ies that’s been somewhat reciprocated. Anders Thomas Jensen has made some iconic dark comedy, which pretty much encapsulate Danish humor. There are many facets and layers pretty much rapid holes that you can dive into and keep analyzing if you wish. Ofc. it can be hard to comprehend all of it, since a lot will be lost to translation, but I think you have an advantage actually living here. Disclaimer: The movies have Mads Mikkelsen in all of them, though; - Blikkende Lygter (Flickering Lights) - De Grønne Slagtere (the Green Butchers) - Adams Æbler (Adam’s Apples) Men and Chicken is a newer one, that I also recommend. The instructor also like to use the same set of actors in his movies, kind of like Tarantino.

The Czech Republic is kind of the Hollywood of Europe, mainly because it's cheap to shoot there, filming crews are cheap to hire, and because they are skilled. Especially an expensive movie to make, like A Royal Affair with expensive dresses, props etc. and a limited budget, can only be done in a place like the Czech Republic.

A TV series for Josh would be "Bryggeren" aka The Brewer It's the history of Old Carlsberg and New Carlsberg I think it's a fantastic series with a lot of Copenhagen history. (and Danish) It starts out in 1834 following the life of I.P. Jacobsen, I can't seem to find it with subtitles though. :-)

If you want a movie without Mads Mikkelsen, you could also try Den Eneste Ene, but I have to admit, I am unsure if it has been subbed with English subtitles. Still it is hilarious. Otherwise, as others have suggested Adam's apples or I Kina spiser de hunde (In China they eat dogs) - both are dark humor comedies.

It was shot in the Czech Republic because it was too costly to make the movie in Denmark. Tragic..

History, and that includes Danish history, is just full of colorful characters and events that definitely deserve their own movies. Most of those are never going to be made. Struense was one of the major political reformers in Danish history, so it was nice that he got a movie. There are a number of danish naval "heroes", all of whom would be interesting to Watch movies about. There is Dyveke. King Knud the Holy. Christian the 4th, obviously. Valdemar Sejr. Multiple events from the Slesvig wars. And so many other good stories. I am sure this applies to any country, but of course I know a lot more about Danish history than about the history of, for instance, the USA. I will not recommend any movies, but two TV series. Just try watching the first episodes to see if you find them interesting at all. One is "Riget", the other is "Borgen",

Ha ha!! Thanks for your showing your reactions. Actually the film was quite historically correct except that Struensee was nor tortured. But I would urge you to dig into what kind of laws Struensee actually made (of course he was not allowed to do that!). He was way ahead of his time: for example no censorship (thus a free press) no torture.. and much more.

Try giving "Bænken" a go. I don't know if it comes with english sub-titles, but it's great familiy drama. Has Jesper Christensen (Mr. White from 007) in the lead. One of the greatest actors of his generation, and Mads is not in it ;-)

The rain was a little disappointing, and trying to too much to capitalize on the doomsday TV series that are so popular. What I really need to see is a good nordic TV show that tells the story about Tordenskjold. Our own Nelson of the sea

It’s pretty historic accurate. Of course it’s still “Hollywoodnized” made into a movie. The big kind of horror here, is that the beheading of Struensee actually went horribly wrong and the first struck of the axe actually landed in his shoulder not killing him instantly. Those horrible scenes were the reason for mr Guillotine to invent his beheading device. He hated being associated with the bloodbaths in the french revolution. But at least his invention didn’t miss.

If you're feeling REALLY brave in terms of genre, then Danish "dogme film" could be an option. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festen , and bonus info, Mads Mikkelsen isn't in it ;)

“Under sandet” - a very dark post WWII film. Interesting character development through the film. “I Kina spiser de hunde”. Dark humor. Very funny. Not featuring Mads Mikkelsen. “Blinkende lygter” Weird but oddly fascinating comedy. (Mads Mikkelsen is in it.) “De grønne slagtere” Hilarious comedy. Very, very strange comedy. But hilarious. (Also a Mads Mikkelsen film.)
