Amtrak Motive Power Transition Era 1996-97: F40PH P32BWH Genesis P40DC/P42DC American Orient Express!
Since the mid 1970s, General Motors Electro-Motive Division F40PH passenger diesels served Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, tirelessly. By the 1990s, the time had come for Amtrak to update its diesel locomotive fleet. Replacements came in the form of General Electric's freight-engine-looking P32BWH (Dash 8-32BWH), and GE's Genesis Series P40DC and P42DC passenger diesels. Through 1996 and 1997, every class of Amtrak diesel could be found pulling its trains, including specials such as the luxurious American Orient Express.
