fascism will always be worse that communism because fascism is ultimately built on genocide. You can whine all about what happened in China and in Russia but the truth the problem with Russia and China was that they were Russia and China and were not really going all in on marx's vision of the end of class distinctions, the cashless society, the end of hierarchy. They used the message of communism and ultimately like those who use message of universal fraternity as espoused by Yeshua or Jesus of Nazareth to establish their own tyrannies. Even the fucking writers of the Big Black Book of Communism who disowned the book based on how it was edited called out the bs about how worse communism was compared to fascism and its most extreme form, nazism. And Nazism was rightwing. We can go into the whiole history of how that is if you want but for now it was and will always be a right ideology.

I’m not a compete socialist nor a complete capitalist but what I do like about Novara Media is they talk about actual working class issues. Unlike certain media in the “right” all they talk about is “woke, trans is bad, lgbtq+ is bad, woke bad again and of course immigrants bad etc etc” and it gets boring quickly. All I want to see discusses is how are we going to fix housing crises, homelessness, child property rising in Britain, people’s wages keeping up with inflation, our infrastructure problems in Britain *look what’s happening to schools* etc etc etc
@SagaciousFrank
@SagaciousFrank Жыл бұрын
Wages for most people, especially at the bottom, will not "keep up" with inflation. It's impossible after successive governments have mired the country in unrepayable amounts of unsustainable debt. Living standards will have to fall, and people will have to toughen up, tighten their belts, and learn to accept a drastic drop in living standards. No amount of preaching from the likes of Aaron Bastani is going to alter the inevitable. You might as well complain about the weather for all the good it will do.

Yup. His immediate words after that just repeats the definition of "political revolution" in more flowery terms (a common tankie tactic), whilst his body language of looking away to the left and avoiding eye contact hints that he knows he's lying too. To be fair I am on the left in a lot of or most respects and I do find most of those on the right that I engage with online are not willing to engage in adult debate either. Usually there is name calling, loony left comments, scoffing at a well researched paper simply answering 'nonsense!' etc. This is one of the reasons I watch this podcast because I find it refreshing. A lot of those on the right see only the ultra woke shouty group as the embodiment of the left but the majority are not like that. I remember there used to be referred to in the UK a 'silent majority' which used to be a right wing thing but I think we have something similar on the left too now. We are not dogmatic, woke authoritarians anymore than the right are racist football lout type folk and I try to keep that in mind because it's easy to forget and makes you feel a lot more optimistic about the trajectory the world is going in. 🙂

Russia suffered at the start of WW2 because Stalin had all the generals that he saw as threats or that didn't tow the party line killed. I hear lots of his points but I don't see capitalism as the issue. Over powered governments/corporations/ councils and globisation are the problem. Communism/socialism has proven its authoritarian in every country it has developed in. So bringing in socialism would install the thing you believe to be changing. I get tired of people that are anti establishment. Either they didn't stay in school long so they got a bad job. Or went to university, studied PE or arts coming out with a big loan. Saying f the system. That capitalism is the problem and socialism is the solution. The system has worked out for me. I did poor in school. So I went to the army, for 8 years. I came out with qualifications. With money I made from investments I got a loan and brought a house. Now I live with my fiance and rent that house out. I work long days during the week but the weekend is mine to do what I want with money to spend. Carl max was a shady character. More of a poet/anarchist than a economist. He was constantly begging for money from his family. He had a nanny from his family that he didn't even pay. Got her pregnant then denied the child was his. He was antisemitism, racist to blacks using the n word in his personal let's. He never washed and was untidy. He had boils on his cock and arse. Capitalism isn't perfect. In real capitalism/a free market you have the ability to better your life. In socialism you are all equally poor apart from those at the top.

You asked: How can you identify with socialism, when it has never worked. I say: it was never allowed to work. American hegemony, perpetrated by CIA subversion, and backed up by the absolute might of the US military assured that it never could and never will. If the Cold War had manifested, instead, as enlightened global diplomacy, the Soviet Union could have marshaled its resources for the betterment of its society and away from competing with the perpetual war machine of the US and its unlimited expenditures. That was and is the whole point of US foreign policy: force its adversaries into destitution and failed statism by outspending, sanctioning, and subverting them from without and from within. How do you not see that?

Whatever they tell you as real as it feels is just 3d chess. If they are on a platform especially. They just preach whatever they think people need to hear to achieve their goal. @@WillyJunior Perhaps that's because you've been misinformed as to what 'Marxist' means? I'm a Marxist, I read a lot of Marxist literature, consume a lot of Marxist content, and spend a lot of time talking to Marxists, and usually when I hear liberals and right-wingers describing Marxism it either a) isn't something I recognise, or b) is basically Stalinism, which is _one_ form that Marxism has taken, and which a majority of Marxists (particularly in the Western tradition) reject. I don't know if you saw it, but I'm reminded of when I heard Jordan Peterson say he thought he'd gone to debate a Marxist when he met Zizek, but found that "he wasn't one." It seems that anyone who doesn't fit a misinformed caricature is "not a real Marxist", which is ironic given Peterson's own rhetoric about people who use that phrase...

@monkeymox2544
@monkeymox2544 Жыл бұрын
@@WillyJunior Okay, but the most concise answer I can give is probably not very satisfying: Marxism is a _tradition of thought,_ which essentially begins with the work of Marx and Engels (although its roots obviously precede them, since Marx drew inspiration from Hegel, Smith, Rousseaux, etc). That's the best I can do, since that is pretty much the only definition which encompasses all forms of Marxism. Anyone working within that tradition is a Marxist. Just to give a few samples of why that's not a cop-out: classical Marxists think that class consciousness will be a major component in the end of capitalism, Leninists think it won't emerge and that society requires a vanguard instead. Reformists want to curb capitalism's excesses, even if in doing so they prolong capitalism itself, whereas accelerationists want to leave capitalism to do its own thing so that it ends sooner. Analytical Marxists think that Marx's methodology was a load of nonsense, whereas there are some dialectical materialists who think it is only Marx's methodology, and not necessarily his conclusions, which are valuable. Classical Marxists are generally materialists, whereas some (like Zizek) want to re-integrate idealism. I could go on. So there isn't _one_ Marxism. There are multiple Marxisms, all integrating, ignoring, rejecting, reinterpreting, amending and adding to Marx and Engels' original work to varying degrees. If you want a discussion about a specific forms of Marxism, I am happy to have that, but I can't go through all of them, I'd be at it all day >

On my first day I was taken to the main dining room and shown where the conservative, labour and liberal tables were. My first question was 'Why don't we just seat them wherever when they come in?' and I was told by a rather startled head waiter 'That would be asking for trouble'. WTF 'are they children' was the though that went through my head. And unfortunately our political system does in fact reduce intelligent adults to children. I think that most of us would agree on 90% of the stuff that needs to be done to make this country a better place to live but we are all stuck talking about the 10% meaning that it is virtually impossible to get anything good done. There are really good people in Parliament but this adversarial divide means they spent their time arguing about crap. If the elite are only those who shape public discourse, doesn’t that make Goodwin himself a member of such elite? Or Triggernometary. People in the media have power, lots of them are liberals, but fundamentally its the people that own the news, employ the columnists, decide the editorial line who are the crucial component of the elite. The rise in living standards achieved in western societies was bitterly fought for by trade unionists, suffragettes, the original Populists in the American mid west etc etc. It certainly did not come from the benevolence of the ownership class. These gains were resisted by the bourgeois establishment at every turn, extreme violence often deployed. In the twentieth century, the largest rise out of poverty for any group occurred under the Chinese communist party. Fact. Now, before you twist that, I'm well aware that one of the largest death tolls from famine in the twentieth century..... also occurred under the CCP. (We could talk about the various famines Britain caused or exacerbated if you like? ) I am not an advocate for any of the old "isms". We're living through the failure of "capitalism" right now. I don't think you will enjoy the coming authoritarian "life support" that will be used to keep it alive but whatever. I digress. But a mixed economy with a less skewed income distribution, less concentrated ownership of wealth, less financialisation, less privatisation of services that should be the purview of the state and less state aid for banks and multinationals....IE....SOCIALISM!!!! doesn't sound like a bad thing. I always find it amazing how these political conversations never go on to identify fiat currency as the enemy, we need to tax the rich more and more because fiat currencies debase at speed. A return to sound money is the first step in a better future. At least give the average man a chance to save for the future. You need to make 7-10% on your money just to track runaway inflation, and thats in Europe, God help Venezuela, Argentina etc. No central authority should have the power to issue money, decentralize money, let the people own the money, and most other arguments dissapear.

I would like to agree with you and I can recommend Ex Nihilo: The Truth about Money on KZfaq about this. However, when Britain had a fixed currency there were long and deep recessions and economic growth has risen significantly since 1931. Sure, between 1694 and 1931 there was almost no long term inflation but there were deep depressions and of course, the Great Depression where we all suffered deflation. The problem isn't Keynes stimulating during a recession, it's the bastardisation of Keynes whereby Governments couldn't turn off the taps.

Here are a few key points from the conversation with Aaron Bastani: • Bastani co-founded the left-wing media outlet Novara Media. He started it due to frustrations with mainstream media coverage and analysis. • He sees the BBC as a liberal, rather than a left-wing, institution. It focuses more on representation issues than workers' rights. • Bastani identifies as a socialist and Marxist. He believes workers should get a significant share of the value they create. However, he acknowledges the role of entrepreneurs in starting businesses and taking risks. • He discussed both successes (Singapore) and failures (USSR, Venezuela) of socialism. He argues socialism in Latin America faced unique challenges due to U.S. opposition. • Policies Bastani supports include: scrapping police commissioners, electoral reform, a national investment bank, and higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. He also supports a land value tax. • On automation, he believes it will eliminate most jobs within 50-100 years. This requires rethinking capitalism and economic distribution. Climate change and aging populations are other vital challenges he highlighted. -Anthropic Claude-2-100k 🙂

Pretty good interview. Aaron's take on the gender pay gap is terrible. He talks about nuance throughout the interview but he has none on that. He mentions a bank with 30% gender pay gap then says that they should pay the same hourly rate. How does he know that they don't? Gender pay gap has nothing to do with same job same pay. He should practice what he preaches and look at the nuance. There are so many factors that play into the gender pay gap. Its not a genuine issue.

At least he came in good faith, which honours him, but he is mostly wrong about South America, probably because he's more oriented towards an "anglo-saxon" audience and doesn't follow South America as much. I live in Spain, there's a lot of people from South America here and I can tell you, the people there vote for socialism, no military coups needed. How did Lula, Boric, Castillo, Amlo, the Kirschner in Argentina come to power? The answer is democratically. And they always claim their example is the Scandinavian social democracies, not the USSR, so this claim that the US "just won't allow" social democracy in South America is just false. And ultimately, what difference does it make if the socialism that destroyed your country came to power democratically or not, the fact remains the same: it still doesn't work.

Really enjoyed the interview. Totally agree the free market can be rigged by people or levered by technology to disenfranchise the working class. Aaron's land tax bit was excellent and shows a thinker capable of pragmatic policies rather that idealism. Career in politics ? Call me a luddite, but I've always thought that the profits of technology should be shared. With most jobs being replaced by AI and robots this necessitates a way of life, politics and infrastructure that shares the benefits of technology. We can embrace some of the convenience of online shopping but need to maintain local distribution networks particularly of food in case the power gets turned off. It's worrying enough that most of the food the UK consumes comes across the channel. So I think the goals for a future society (Schwab and his techno-nonsense aside), should also be to harden society against a tech outage by retaining a percentage of human jobs in key areas. I think 100% reliance on technology is both stupid and naiive. We a living in an age when a nuclear EMP or any number of natural disasters would immediately require humanity to revert to 0 AD styles of living. That farming is increasingly outsourced is just another example of the elite getting control of the workers they want to extract value from. 30 years ago I used to think that communism could be done well if only we had computers to micro-manage everything. And now I know we need to let 'free markets' design, run and produce food, goods and services just in case the power goes off. The use of computers should be limited to tax / guide those free markets into being productive rather that cash cows for 'elites'. Right now the overwhelming signal would be to use government leverage to use town centre business property to provide accommodation. Oh right, Aaron already covered that with land tax. I have to say that both Marxism and Capitalism are islands in the middle of nowhere when it comes to socio-economic policy in the face of technology. Feudalism or Exponential Energy Wastage are not answers. I think people are ready for a new political message.

They have spoken about these topics on Novara, I thin Aaron's potion has always been pretty clear: he sympathises with the need for minority groups to organise politically, which out of necessity means the solidification of some sort of identity. He thinks inclusion and progressiveness is broadly good. However, he also thinks that the language of identity has been coopeted by elites, who use fringe issues to distract from much more important ones, and also to shut down debate.

This is how political discourse should be in the UK. We're not the French or a theocracy. The opposition isn't the enemy. In the end, we are all human and likely want the same core things, family, security, health, a thriving society, and thriving world, human and natural. We simply differ in our opinion of how to get there. It's very refreshing to see, and look, a sprinkle of socialism isn't the worst thing. Healthcare, transport, water, housing, etc. We don't want to end up like the dystopia America has become. It's just a matter of how far it goes.
