This was another great fossil hunting adventure! This particular location always tests us physically due to the tons of log jams that make normal paddling difficult to impossible. It always pays off with excellent fossils and memories made, as this video should show.

When I was a kid , Dad had a well drilled here in Central Florida. When they set off some dynamite at the end of the shaft we had a fountain ( artesian well ) of sharks teeth. Log's across the river I call a Limbo Log since you have to limbo in the canoe to get under them. As far as snakes an Gators in my 77 years I have never had a problem with them. I've canoed/camped on a lot of Florida's rivers. Your river looks like a good area to Canoe the length ( No Hurry ) of with a Jungle Hammock and camping supplies. Back about 20 years ago they were finding sharks teeth & Mammoth Bones on the Peace River.

Hey Chris,love your channel. bring a lightweight chain saw to saw the logs next time.then it wil be clear fora while for future trips. And please tell me you bring flares w you. If one of you were bit by a venomous snake, it would be very hard for them to find you. and long wait no matter what for EMS.. could be fatal.
@Dynotop1a
@Dynotop1a 3 жыл бұрын
Probably better to “leave no trace” rather than clearing a bunch of natural tree falls. Stuff like that is part of the deal when you look for fossils. I agree on the safety stuff though and recommend familiarizing with the native snake species in the event you are bitten and need an ID.

That was the BEST SPOT! Hoooly crap, though, coming back that late-- I kept expecting one of you to scream and have to extract a baby gator from your leg or whatever; the ones that are a couple of feet long are dangerous, because they're not smart or experienced enough yet to fear big creatures but they're always hungry. Loved all the wonderful finds, especially that beautiful Tiger Shark tooth and the Mako tooth; also, just a thought-- if you ever end up selling just random fossilized bones, I'll buy them and make them into windchimes, because the sounds that your screenfuls make when you rake your hands through the bones are beautiful. Keep safe, and happy hunting!

I found a paper that might be helpful: "Determining the size of American alligators using hind-foot track length," but you'll have to get it through Sci-Hub or something because it's behind a journal paywall.
