A kind of beginners guide here. I present the receiver "as is", looking at the controls and the user interface

My second ATS 20 arrived today via Amazon. Took 7 days from China. Delivery from them always quicker than they advertised I recommend them rather than Ebay for this set. Interesting thing is that the on off and the band select buttons on the rear are slightly longer than my first one making it easier to operate them both without having to turn the radio around. Very useful. Noted that Ricardo has removed all earlier versions from his library only leaving version 7. It upgraded without issue. I absolutely love this little radio Thank you for all your posts Kevin. You have helped me tremendously Andy

I have 2 of these and one has tuning problems. I used to be a MICRO-TECH for communications with a state government. I lost my sight so it's hard to analyize and repair anything. But you have given me a lot of pointers for what to look for in your videos.

Useful information, "...a kit someone else has put together..." is a very good way to sum the receiver up. Thanks Kevin.

A good overview. I ordered the same receiver as a set-top box for my computer to receive FT8 and RTTY. Only this receiver does not have input selection and I have already made additional band-pass filters after the antenna for amateur bands. I hope this will improve the radio reception. And also, to reduce the noise of the air, it is necessary to make an attenuator with a smooth adjustment from 0 to - 60db at the input from the antenna, This is also done and tested on another radio. Thank you and my 73!

Mini USB isn't as common anymore but it's a lot more durable for long term use compared to Micro. If they keep making these, I'm sure eventually they will have USB C ports.

I wish it supported higher bandwidths, 10 is normally what I use on a SDR.

Thank you for the good video that you put together for this receiver. Have you modified your unit? I just ordered one and waiting for it to arrive and hoping that I have to modify it on programs it. Just want to be able to listen to all the bands that it can handle.

I have upgraded the firmware on one of my radios, look at the other videos.

Yes, the encoder is crap but it is simple to replace if you have the necessary soldering skills. It uses a variation of the very common EC11 encoder that you can get many places including Amazon. The original is 'upside-down' in that it mounts through the front PCB so the shaft is in front and the body in back. The normal EC11 can be used this way by bending the pins in the opposite direction. The replacement I bought is much sturdier than the original. It is listed as "uxcell 360 Degree Rotary Encoder Code Switch Digital Potentiometer EC11 7 Pins 15mm Shaft". The rotation is reversed from the original. If you are updating the software, it can be fixed there very easily.

Does anyone know what the input impedance of the antenna is? I presume that the supplied telescopic antenna is not matched to it?
@KevinOReillyswl3 жыл бұрын
Not sure but it is fairly sensitive on the whip to be fair.

sorry to bother you with what you might consider a silly question. i have a ATS-20 branded SI4732, and have been rather pleased with it, my main reason for getting this radio, is to listen to amature hams. my question is, what is the bandwith(BW) button for? i know the definition of bandwith, but i dont understand its application here. please help! thanks much for ur time and consideration, all the bet, over and out!! mish
@KevinOReillyswl2 жыл бұрын
The bandwidth button helps cut out interference from close by stations. The wider the bandwidth the better the sound quality but if you are experiencng interference try a smaller bandwidth. On SSB most radios run with a bandwidth of around 2.5 to 3khz but on a crowded band you may want to try a narrower filter maybe 1.8 khz

Ciao. Ho Ordinato anch’io una SI4732 ma, con stupore, mi è arrivato una SI4735. Sai dirmi qual’è la differenza fra i due apparati? Grazie

@@vitomelis That is just the startup screen, Ricardo has that title in the sketch. It can be changed. I think your radio has the 4732 chip.

Tuning that radio would drive me nuts. Any radio with the SI4732 chip will suffer from that horrible distortion on SSB which is almost every DSP radio I've heard. At least the radio in the video above doesn't sound as muffled as the Tecsun PL-880/990x and S-8800. The newer PL-330 actually sounds better than the PL-330 and the 4Khz filter actually works. With the SI4732, SSB was an after thought.
@sanderverweij2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i have an S-8800 and i really (hate) it that the 4Khz on SSB is not working, also the overal sound of the S-8800 is really not that good, for such an expensive radio... but still a nice radio ;-)

@@KevinOReillyswl well from a complete beginner point of view I have no understanding of this radio. For instance what are all these buttons? I have no clue what these acronyms mean or how they relate to adjustment. I think just from continually messing with the radio I've started understand a few things. For one the frequencies are set up in a thousand megahertz blocks, when you push the mode button you can push the main tuning knob and tune people in on some of the ham bands. I still don't understand what the AGC button does or the bottom left band button or bandwidth. Also step makes no sense to me, why would I want to skip channels in blocks of 10 or 100?

Thanks for the great introduction to this radio. Most others are just talking about it. You have given a great demo of what it's like to listen to and tune as well as telling us about things that make may be wrong with it. Thanks for your time.
