Today's strategy for beating the heat is to try a bunch of classic, American frozen desserts... or maybe I should call them frozen drinks? Iced novelties? The term is up for debate, I would appreciate some input from you all...

Guys, Inspired by your video back in May, on the non-existent region of Italy (Campobasso,Capracotta), I took June and July and did a trip around south Italy and Sicilia, by train from Firenze. Among the highlights were Matera, Taormina, Palermo, Sant'Agnello and Ortegia. It was a fantastic experience, and I discovered a lot of new (for me) foods, including the granita alla mandorla that Eva made in this video. I want to thank you guys for inspiring me to get off my butt and do the traveling. Grazie mille, ragazzi!

As an American who went to an international school in Finland I found that Europeans are almost universally disgusted by root beer. An English friend said it tasted like the cough syrup he was given as a child.

Unlike continental Europeans, sometimes English people like it, though rarely. Root beer is an evolution of a type of medieval English small beer. They still have the similar dandelion and burdock drink, but I think it's out of fashion.

Although I’m born and (mostly) raised in Norway, and although root beer pretty much tastes like the smell of tiger balm, root beer still is nostalgic and delicious to me from parts of my childhood in the US. Nothing like a root beer float, and that’s why I love it.

I think her refined palate being able to taste the sugar is really telling of American foods. To us these frozen treats aren't all that sugary because we've been conditioned to accept that sheer level of sugar as being normal since we were kids. Definitely explains the obesity issues in America.

Once you start eliminating a lot of processed foods and sugars, you can pick up on it. In Italy not many people eat processed foods.

I agree. Everything in the US tastes too sweet to me. The thing is also that these things were never meant to be eaten as substitutes for real food. I'm guessing that before these big corporate franchises had so many locations people took kids to a soda fountain for a treat where the food were more normal, not as processed and full of dyes etc.. The mass production and more customers had led to more sugar and fillers. Non-food.

In the first two or three Pasta Grammar videos I watched, I was convinced Eva was exaggerating her accent for effect. Finally I realized, "Nope, that's just the way she speaks." If she and I were each to drink a couple of strong cocktails, I wouldn't be able to understand a damn thing she says. 😄

my father was here from 21 to his passing at 78.. he retained his STRONG accent and ability to hack off the end of american words till the end.. like pill for pillow etc. i was thinking of Aruba last night and i know my father would be saying ARUB... lol. and i miss it incredibly (Its 3 years this week and i find myself trying to reproduce in my head how he said things.. his way.. his voice..)

My grandmother came to America when she was in her 20's, and she never lost her thick accent. She never had anyone teach her English, so that may have something to do with it. She knew enough to get by, though!

I think honeycomb is simpler. It takes a couple tries to learn the technique and get it right but you get a huge batch with few ingredients (it's mostly airy). Namely sugar, water, and baking soda. And you'll get it done in five minutes. It seems to be baby's first candy making?

Not as good as a slushy and yes I did actually make their recipe for the lemon one. Most people commenting here haven't bothered and that's what they are counting on for their BS to fly. It was ok but don't believe their BS.

My uncles father in law whose German had a root beer thinking it was all real beer, like a German beer. He spat it out so fast. The family was cracking up.

Meh, the most popular style of German beer isn't even legal to be called beer under Reinheitsgebot. I don't really care what they think beer is or isn't. Using root as an adjunct is absolutely possible is "real" alcoholic beer.

Many of the 170 gelaterias in my hometown Vienna are owned by Italian families who came to the city in the 19th century from the poor mountain valleys of the (now) Italian region of Trentino when Northern Italy was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. In search for a better life in the empire's capital, they started to sell ice cream, a thing that was already popular in Italy but mostly unknown to a broader Viennese population. Many of the ice cream shops are closed during winter and the families spend some time in the Italian valleys they originally came from over 100 years ago.

I love Trentino. I had such a great time visiting the area with a local and some mutual friends. All the castles! And the northernmost citrus "farm". It was such a wonderful place to visit and I left with many bottles of wine and other assorted beverages. In many of the tourist sites, locals tried to speak to me in German. I'd reply, "Canadese. Inglese e francese." Which is sadly about the extent of my Italian. Also, from hearing the navigation system, I also know that "sinistre" is left.

Frozen Novelties would be a perfect name. In Chicago, you can get at a stand called Mario's, you can get true Italian granita so smooth even Eva would be impressed. The Italians who emigrated to America and went to Chicago coined the term Italian ice.

My grandfather was from Chicago (but born in Fox Lake). My grandma was married to him at 16, a couple of years after she moved there. She told me about the thick Chicago style pizza and the granita they had there. I grew up in Albuquerque, and there was a pizza place we went to that sold Italian ice, and she always said it wasn’t the same as it was in Chicago. She moved to NM soon after my dad was born, with her in-laws, and my grandfather came down after he sold their family home.

Mario's is the shit. But Freddy's in Cicero has really good Italian ice AND the best gelato in the city AND tons of great savory food so that's the spot I go whenever I'm back in town.

"Italian ice" became popular in America during the depression. It's made with just water and a little flavor, huge treat for children in the heat back when there was no ac and refrigerators were not common. I like to make some with a bit of coconut cream, crushed pineapple and banana. Even though the banana isn't the best looking thing sure tastes great!

At about 8 years old, I mail ordered a multi-blade cheapo grinder/slicer (this was before Ron Popiel) "as a gift for my grandmother," just knowing she would find it wonderful for her cooking. That aside, one day I ground up some ice, and poured some molasses on it. and promptly reacted as Eva does with root beer. Disgusting. That was my last effort. LOL.

During the summer in Chicago, we used to go down to Taylor St and get fresh Italian Lemon Ice with real lemon and lemon zest. Served in a little pleated paper cup. Like the paper cups for ketchup, but bigger.

I love Root beer Floats! My dad got them every Sunday at the A&W. We also had a shop in town that made its own ice cream and we would get floats there to. Good stuff

The old A&W Root Beer was the best until they started bottling it and changed the recipe. I hate it now. IBC Root Beer is what A&W used to be. Awesome.

I used to date a European girl and introduced her to root beer floats and she had a similar reaction. I actually had my first soda in two years when I showed it to her. It was so good though. She was mystified by my reverence for this treat.

As a European from Malta, I can attest that most Europeans hate root beer floats. However, my grandfather visited the US when he was younger and brought back with him the concept of ice-cream floats and I was personally hooked. I have been drowning my ice-cream in soda since I was a little boy and I am almost 50 now 😊 Small disclaimer, I only do this for cheap soft serve ice-cream and tend to eat good quality gelato as is or at most as a milk shake. One of my most favourite things in the world though is Sicilian granita col latte di mandorla! 😊

The drinks are “American Fountain Drinks” as they all originated from the drug store soda fountains . The Italian Ice’s and Slushies are frozen treats and truly descended from Italian Granita’s . Italian ices we’re introduced by immigrants as freshly scooped granitas and sold in paper cups like an ice cream cone in Italian neighborhoods from rolling carts in the summer. Later, with advanced refrigeration, they began to package them in cups with lids for all year round convenience. You missed ice cream sodas, malteds and egg creams.

Similar to other comments here, I haven’t found anyone outside North America who likes root beer. My sister-in-law is Brazilian/Japanese, and she says the same thing - root beer is soapy, and medicinal-tasting. But I think every culture has a soda or drink that’s more endemic to its region that outsiders rarely enjoy. 🤷🏻‍♂️ But yeah, root beer floats are AWESOME. I like to actually mix it all up so the consistency is like a blend of soda and ice cream. And experimenting with different ice cream/soda combinations is really great. Orange cream float being another personal favorite.

Ohh, I love Granita. When I was a child my mother and I went to Italy by bus (to Venezia, Roma o Limone sul Garda) and there was always the first stop in Italy at the "Passo del Brennero" and there was a small cart selling Granita. If only because of the sound of this word and the selection of flavours (limone, arancia, fragola o menta) it sounded like paradise. Of course, it was not top-quality, but it was ITALIA!!! That is now almost 50 years ago, but I still remember how happy I was to have this frozen pleasure - it was like the anticipation of all the Italian treats to come...

I am currently in Pescara and love granita but the local gelatoria served me a Limone granita with lemon syrup that made it a boba drink with Limone flavored jelly bits and it was so full of sugar, yuck. Need to find a better gelatoria and order a menta granita.

@@wrldtrvlr7246 I'm from Pescara and it's normal to find this kind of "beach version" granita, more liquid and raw, and you can usually find it all along the Adriatic coast. It's not a mistake or a symbol of a bad place, it's just a granita that has nothing to do with the Sicilian one! Honestly, I can't tell you where to eat a good Sicilian granita in the surrounding area because if you ask for it anyone will give you this version! EDIT: I searched on Internet and in Piazza Unione, near Corso Manthoné, there is a bar called "Mizzica" which specializes in Sicilian cuisine. Try to go there!

I'm actually surprised you went with the chocolate shake instead of a chocolate malt, especially in a real retro diner setting like that. I feel like the malt is both the more distinctly flavored and more quintessentially American treat.

You're so right. I remember being young (once) and I worked at a bakery that made shakes. Had a dude come in one day looking for a MALT. I understood what he wanted. HE understood what he wanted. But we didn't have malt. Tried to explain the difference between a shake and a malt to my co-worker who didn't get it. Thought they were the same thing.

I certainly expected the root beer float reaction. Many of my international friends tell me they find root beer to taste like toothpaste. It is definitely an acquired American taste.

When I was a kid I thought root beer was an actual medicine because it was so bitter, so my mom always made my floats with Cream Soda. Does that even exist anymore?

When I was watching Ava make the almond flavor, that is exactly how you make almond milk. I used to make it often but not so much anymore. Maybe I should start again and buy an ice cream machine?🤔 when I was a teenager back in the mid 70s, there used to be an A restaurant called Ferrells ice cream parlor and they had a Sundae called a tin roof… it was vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and peanuts on top and whipped cream of course 😃❤️ That was my favorite.

Some cultures just can't do root beer/sarsaparilla. The Japanese for example think they smell like muscle pain patches (Salonplas, Bengay etc). Here in Southeast Asia we love it. It is sold here under the generic name Sarsi.

Eva is a genius. I don't think I've ever watched her cook something that didn't look great. It makes me glad because when I have to hear around that Italian food is just about pasta tomatoes and cheese I can just link them this channel.

Or you can simply tell those people, that they don't know the Italian cuisine. A cuisine with all its varieties, with all its regional specialties, but also with its specialties from city to city, that not even we Italians know everything up to bottom. The more we travel around Italy, the more we discover new things!

Frozen beverages Harper...that is what it is. By the way, the "Italian ice" is about a zillion years old from the Northeast. It was made by an Italian and Eva...it was based on the granita you speak of. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood. Mama mia! Everything was so good. Originally as a kid this was sold by this old Italian guy who would scoop the ice from a container in an ice cart. Cherry and lemon were the original flavors. Eventually, they were mass produced under the name Marinos or Ginos. These were the best. Luigis and everything else was no comparison. Buon appetito!

that kind of granita was typical in rome and central italy, eva's style is from sicily and southern Italy (and it is better)

I’m in Mexico but whenever I’m getting a lemonade in a restaurant I ask them to use half the sugar they usually put in it and there’s never a problem… unless it’s not made with real fruit -then I get some other drink. Perhaps Eva could do the same at Sonics? It seems like they make every drink at the moment.

I didn't realize there was such animosity towards root beer...I love trying just about any crafted (small batch) root beer I can find, and I will admit, the tastes of them do span quite a range from great to terrible. Another regional soda that Harper may remember from Maine that I personally enjoy, but lots of people detest, is Moxie. Now THAT is an acquired taste.

I think Italian Ice originated in New York City and it was originally fruit syrup poured over shaved ice. The wonder bread version is the Sno-Cone.

Ah, man…. I remember A&W Drive In restaurants up until the 80s, when they transformed to “regular” fast food places with drive-through ordering. Famous of course for their Root Beer. And Root Beer floats.

I'm very lucky, because I live in Sicily and I can have a granita almost every day. Yep, the almond one is unbelievably good. When it's very very hot, lemon and watermelon are my favorite and very refreshing. Brava Eva! 🥰🥰🥰

It's ok but they exaggerate their reactions. I did the lemon recipe and it's not as good as a slushy. Total BS reactions from these KZfaqrs. In the end it's about getting as many subs as you can and making as much money from views as you can. If that means exaggeration and BS then KZfaqrs will do it.

This summer since it's been so hot I have been going to Rita's Italian Ice and frozen custard, pretty good but I know it would not stand up to Eva's homemade version. My favorite is just adding good vanilla icecream and pour some cold coffee over it. Delicious! You can add whatever makes you happy from there. Fresh whip cream, chocolate syrup all good! 🤗😋

This is not the first time I've had this problem with KZfaqrs. No one will listen even though I'm one of the few people who actually did this recipe, so they will continue the BS. Root beer is an acquired taste. In Europe, very few people like it and compare it to cough syrup. Living in the U.S., I even know plenty of Americans who hate root beer and judge me for liking root beer floats. As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

@@dtz1000 Yes, they exaggerate a bit as a part of the concept they created to make their videos interesting. I don't mind that! On the contrary, I love their style and that's why I am a subscriber to the channel. I live in Greece and I am more familiar with the italian way of cooking, especially from the South Italy, and the cuisines of the two countries share more or less the same ingredients. By the way, I can't resist to a strawberry milkshake and I enjoy soda, ice cream and syrup mixed together!

Actually, in Italy we have the grattachecca which is ice grated with fruit syrup or citrus juice. It is a typically Roman thing and it is not as good as granita but there are those who prefer it and in some famous kiosks lemon peel or homemade syrups are used. Eva, I think the taste of soap is because of the ginger that sometimes is in the root beer along with the other herbs and roots

We also have granita in Spain (granizado). I use to add some dark rhum on the lemon one, just a bit, as Eva added the coffee on the almond one. Thanks for the video and the recipes

You have these recipes because you came in the 1500s and copied everything we made and brought it back, you have a "Sobrasada" which is Soppressata in Italian which is the same thing as Nduja but with Paprika. Soppressata is instead a salame, so you guys got confused and i'm pretty sure you switched two names with each other Also flavoured ice was invented in the Roman Empire to keep cool during the summer

Though I’m Russian but I love root beer! And “floats” are funny to drink, I loved simple cola and crème-brûlée ice cream. Nowadays I’m not much into sweet stuff. We here in Russia have very similar soft drink «Baykal» that comes from USSR period and it’s dark in colour and got a lot of herbs in it. Maybe you’ll try it one day, it’s nice.

They have hotdogs and we got baked sausage in the dough and etc. I guess everybody on Earth like simple pleasures :) But In USSR kids usually drink soda and eat ice cream separately+we both love milkshakes. Soviet milkshake is one of the best things from USSR, it's not so dence as american, and theres little unnoticeable pieces of ice in the drink so they melts right away. I could drink about 800ml of that sweet stuff! Nowadays it's not so common to find soviet style milkshake.

@@alanmjohnson homemade kvass is one of the best! just find a recipe for yourself that suits you. There are even recipes with hops. So with hops you can store kvass longer in beer bottles in a cold place.

I understand Eva’s dislike for the root beer float. I like root beer. I love vanilla ice cream. But mixing ice cream into soda always seemed to make both worse for me. The soda is less bubbly and the ice cream is watered down. Maybe it’s because I didn’t try them until my teens? Who knows? That almond ice that Eva made though. It looked so amazing. Then adding espresso. Wow. That combo looked great. (Caffeine makes everything better of course)

My wife and I still make root beer floats all the time. For us, we like to mix the ice cream and root bear until it becomes more like a "Frosty". Still thick enough to eat with a spoon, but creamy enough to use a straw.

1)If Eva has ever used fresh cilantro leaf in cooking, she has tasted soap. Not coriander seed, but sprouted grown leafy cilantro. Soap. 2)The Diner float is actually a "Malt Shake". Malt is the sweet liquid that is extracted from toasted (malted) barley and is the main ingredient in pre-fermented beer.

Italians have a medicine that they take, usually as kids, that tastes just like root beer. It's similar to the Italian drink Chino for us. We learned that when living in Italy and tried to get our Italian friends to drink root beer, and they would adamantly refuse anything we offered.

As a dual national British-Canadian I think that Root Beer is the Marmite of soft drinks. I absolutely love the stuff my stepfather who's half Dutch also loves Root Beer but I've got plenty of European friends who love it and plenty of European friends who hate it. Some people who hate it says it tastes a bit like Liquorice others say it tastes like the smell of Deep Heat (I can see where they're coming from though)

I am a 1st generation American Italian and with that said, I grew up loving root beer. So, I too Harper LOVE a good, old fashioned root beer float! I also love Italian ice. (Here in the Chicago area, the brand that’s well known is Luigi’s.) BUT, nobody does frozen treats like they do in Italy! (I may be a little biased.) My cousin in Rome used to make us a granita with cantaloupe that was outrageous. And her peach & nectarine sorbetto was to die for! And don’t even get me started on frozen limoncello and all the different gelato flavors! 😉

I can't believe it Eva! You made a creamy Granita like the one you can find in Catania! You really don't have idea about the "war" there is between Messina and pretty much all Sicily VS Catania. The first ones offer almost liquid granita (the most known, kinda like ice), the latter offer creamy and soft Granita, an evolution of classic ancient granita, something kinda gelato which is not gelato. It is the BEST thing ever and I think you made the most similar version to it. THANK YOU...and I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING 🤣

I also loved and still love root beer floats - but it's funny watching Europeans trying root beer for the first time - like peanut butter it's something that's not that common over there and the reaction is love-it-or-hate-it. A good frozen adult milkshake to try would be a hummer. Combine rum, Kahlúa, vanilla ice cream, and a few ice cubes in a blender. Pour into a glass and top with whipped cream. It’s delicious and my mother’s favorite growing up. Now it’s one of my favorites!
