That cabin is going to last over 150 years, Great job, You need to get a wood burning tool and burn your name and a build date so they will know who and when, and you'll wright yourself in history , Terry from Chattanooga

I just finished binge watching the original series and part 2. What you’ve created is an absolute masterpiece! One thought I had about the Simpson Ties and brackets you’re using to reinforce the screwed structural connections; you should think about getting some Super Blue which will turn those galvanized brackets and bolts black. I’ve used for similar situations. It can be a bit pricey at $50-$60 per quart but it’s like magic. Search Walmart for the quart size.

Hey man. Great cabin, and great videos. I watch a bunch of these and I like your simple relaxing style. Keeping it real. My wife and I fled to TN to a cabin when the pandemic hit Queens NY. (I may have over-sold the need to get out of the city because i love the outdoors and it was a once in a lifetime chance to work from the woods!) I was born and raised on a farm in the northwest of Ireland. Moved to NYC in 2016 when i got married. I've travelled the states (actually cycled across the states too) and I've never felt more at home and at peace than I did in TN. Your videos of the self built cabin and the peaceful land are my dream. Love the 8x2 construction and the burned timber and corroded looking tin. Very nice job well done
@shortsweettoo
@shortsweettoo Жыл бұрын
Great result. It all looks absolutely lovely. I would caution, however, that while your canvas will help keep your cabin warmer, it may well act as a wick to bring the rain in. May I suggest a waterproof tarp that is secured to cover the entire exterior door. That along with your interior fabric, should keep you and your belongings both warm and dry. Oh. And you were making me hungry 🙂
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion on the tarp. I'll monitor the canvas and see how it goes. I like that it let's in light when I open the barn doors. It was a tasty dinner for sure. Take care!

WHY A BARN DOOR ? GONNA STORE A JEEP ?
@trinarock8643
@trinarock8643 Жыл бұрын
@@johnhubble5373 It's for a future bedroom addition. He explained it in the video if you missed it. I can see a possibility for the bench near the barn doors to also work as a fold out bed if you added a piano hinge or the like to the front of the bench with another fold out set of boards on top and a stop to hold it in place near the barn doors if that makes sense. Depending on choice and the length of course. An angled leg attached to the bottom storage could provide the other leg. Just an idea.

I am not sure how the woodstove is doing with keeping the cabin warm, but you might consider a couple pieces of ridged foam insulation to cover the addition opening. cove both the inside and outside, and I bet you would see a big difference in the temperature. Great job on the build. I have been looking at doing a similar build for a while now, I was surprised to find your video using 2x materials as logs.

Here’s a thought, read about hydraulic ram pumps and see if that could help pump water to a point where you could set up a small hydro unit. When I was growing up in the late ‘50s I visited a farm that used the ram to fill the water tanks. That ram lifted the water some distance up hill. I am vague about the height as things seemed bigger when I was young. Still an interesting idea for you to look into.

Been watching your construction, great concept, the walls are a great idea. With the cost of lumber lately, you must own a lumber yard 😊. I do have a couple suggestions. I’m 72 yrs young and have been building for over 50 yrs. some of your practices are an accident waiting to happen…..toss the plastic buckets…use a ladder. Build yourself a couple saw horses and use them….every time you do that under your leg sawing I cringe…if that saw binds and jumps, you’re looking at potential serious injury, lastly….please clean your work site daily, it only takes a couple minutes, scraps left lying around are a hazard. I definitely admire your work ethic and creativity, just don’t want to see you get hurt.

Great build series! Always happy when you post a new video. Why did you decide to build using this technic? I mean the wall, floor, doors, using 2x6 and 2x8? I think it is a great idea for a solo build, especially if you have to carry all the lumber. Thank you for sharing, very inspiring!

I wanted the look and feel of a log cabin but didn't feel I could cut my own trees down and make logs quite yet. This was the next best thing especially doing this solo. Thanks for watching and take care!

I like how your cabin is coming along. I like to give you a idea for stacking the firewood by the wood stove. Look around for scrape meatel that could by a cradle to hold the wood in a nice neat stack. Look at how the Eagle couch shop on KZfaq.

See, I would of put the sink area where you put the bench and the bench where you put the sink...to make it easier to access the woodstove from the countertop workspace. But otherwise, thanks for the ideas

Will there be a stove in the bedroom? Hope you do a drinking tank tub in the bathroom. A rustic vanity would be cool too. But never mind, I just have loved this build all the way. I keep thinking about what I did wrong not to live this way. I especially like how you build. It is y way of thinking. Thanks for a really great video.

I may put a little stove in there if the main stove doesn't heat the cabin enough. I hope it does but we'll see. Bathroom will have a pump shower since I don't have enough slope for gravity fed rainwater system. Still trying to figure out the lay out. Thanks for watching!

You just described my new bathroom i am designing- I am in the process of doing a total renovation. I wanted the white bathtub, but went with copper. Old reclaimed wood vanity with vessel sinks.

Love your channel...and cabin! I was wondering what you think of someone in a colder climate adding some rigid foam sandwiched between two layers of inner/upper boards? It would add thickness and expense I realize, but if one were going to spend a lot of (winter) time in a cabin built this way, it might improve comfort? Anyway, I love the cabin!
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Having rigid foam as the center board (tongue) wouldn't be strong enough and would snap. Now if you are not meaning it as the center board (tongue) then yeah that would definitely be more insulated but a bit more work. It's going to be about 1 degree here on Thursday night so I'm really looking forward to testing the Rvalue of my cabin even though it's not completely weather proofed. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm late, I'm late for a very important date. I'm not first today but I'm here! How did you come up with the idea for your building method with the three boards joined together? I've been calling them Lincoln Logs or Lego. lol You are the only person I've ever seen build in that fashion and I've watched too many channels to count. The result is just so cool. I see you have a Jackery. I'm seeing them everywhere these days. I have one on my wish list in case the lights go out. What model to you have?

Ok. You piqued my curiosity when you referenced shear loads. Are you employees in construction industry? If so, commercial or residential? Maybe a Structural Engineer or Project Manager? I ask because I’ve been in commercial construction for around 30 years.
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
I'm not in construction but know enough about building to be dangerous. I know nails are much better for shear while screws are better for grip. I wanted to make sure the rafters were secure to the ridge beam with a metal brace and Simpson strong connectors for peace of mind. Thanks for watching!

This is one of my favorite cabins too. Though I priced a 2x8x16 and it was $20 plus per board. Unless you milled your own lumber, all that lumber cost you a bag of money. How much exactly?
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
It's not as expensive as one would think compared to buying real logs. I was fortunate to buy most of the lumber in summer of 2021 when pricing was about 40-50% less. I'm going to do a total cost video shortly. Thanks for watching amd take care!

Happened across your channel the other day and had to go back and watch from the beginning. Love the cabin and the location. Beautiful place. Just was wandering how you are going to open barn door with bench thare?
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Regarding the barn doors, the track only goes to the very edge of where the bench begins, so it won't be an issue. Same thing on other side when I put kitchen countertop in. Take care!!

Probably the best thought out & executed cabins i have seen on YT. Love the way you made you joints in the sideing. No need to chink! Also that metal roof at that steep angle will never leak. Everything i see is outstanding & super sturdy. Great job!

Thanks for watching and good question. You'll notice I only ran the barn door track to the edge of the bench. Same thing on the other side where kitchen counters will be. Both doors will open to give about a 40" opening to walk thru. Take care!

You Are doing a great job and the idea of building with 2*8 is fantastic!!!! please keep up the excellent work :) I have one question for you if you don't mind please.. any particular reason for using screws instead of nails?
