There are types of wool that are really good for summer, especially if the temperature outside is higher than your body’s. Thin wool (cold/tropical wool) will insulate the body and spreads/lets through the sweat to cool you very effectively. There are weathers were no matter what you wear, you wish you’d be submerged in cold water at all times - and for those linen or (adequate) wool are much more confortable to me than cotton.

This is amazing! You always nail the intersection of informative and comedic. As someone who lives in the American south where we are pretty much always solidly in the soup dumpling zone for summer, those recs are def appreciated. I’m currently working on a dappled lace raglan by James N Watts in the suggested yarn (Undine) and I can already tell it’s gonna be the best summer knit I’ve ever made for soup dumpling summer.

Silk is really good as insulating, so if you want to be really warm, try silk and wool blends, if you want cooling down, linen is a must, Cotton is fine and wool (really fine wool) is surprisingly effective

I am in AWE of you having so many summer knits? In summer I mostly feel like dying and not leaving the house ever, so I only have one (1) summer knit: A cropped Tolsta tee (creabea) in the Hobbii Bamboo Cotton yarn. It's soft and light, but it pills SO MUCH. I do still want to knit a square neck camisole in black also, I have 100% been influenced by you.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and it’s definitely in the “spring is long this year” quadrant for most of the summer to most people. I consider above about 70F and sunny to be in soup dumpling zone, though, because I hate wearing most sunscreens (they often feel sticky, like sweat that’s somehow even worse) and usually opt for long sleeves, hat, etc. to prevent burns. I’ll often carry an opaque umbrella when it gets way too hot for anything else. I definitely need to make (most likely by sewing, I have a lot of linen fabric and no linen yarn) or find myself some long sleeved linen shirts and/or dresses for peak comfort when it’s too hot for long sleeves in cotton. Rayons (viscose, bamboo, tensel, modal, lyocell, etc.) behave like natural plant fibers in the heat but have the softness and drape of silk or alpaca fibers, so that’s another good option for summer weather!

as a fellow summer hater i appreciated how real the review was LMAO. i've also been a longtime skeptic of summer knits in general but i've been challenging myself this year to try more summer knitwear and summer fibers. i'm currently working on the Boho Cami by Life is Cozy in Sincere Sheep Coastal, which is wool/linen/silk and i'm impressed by the fabric it's making so far 👀 the little bit of wool makes it easy on the hands, but it's crepey and drapey and i think it might even stand up to a korea summer LOL

Thank you, thank you for this video! So much info!! Useful info! And I could identify! I have been hesitant to use the better yearn because of the possibility of not being able to wear the garment after the expense as well as the work and time involved too. The tanks would fit my preferences now….being in my 80th year I’m hesitant 😟 to expose my arms as well as chest….it's not pretty. I wear long sleeved shirts a lot over tops. Southern Indiana summer is in the hot dumpling section for sure. I did get over not wanting to expose my skinny arm when I taught in rooms with no air conditioning through the end of August through the middle of October I’m back to covering my arms now. Then there’s the issue with air conditioned restaurants…….l Thanks for your input on yarns and patterns as I have been looking at the summer tees lately. You have lifted my spirits as well as given good advice!! Wishing you the best! gk

I loved the explanations of different summer temperatures and your quadrants, it actually was quite informative, made sense to me, and highly comedic. I am still recovering from cramps from so much belly laughter. I have never laughed so much from a knitting channel tbh! In summer where I live, which is boggy, swampy, muggy, hot and humid, the littlest of all states, Rhode Island I'm pretty much a soup dympling 24/7. ... I so appreciate all the pattern recs, am currently making an Outline tee in recommended yarn Undine but first attempt was way way too large. Hopefully second one will be better. Merry making! Happy to have found you here on the interwebs! ✨️🧶

I watchesd this initially as something to have on while doing a mindless knit to keep from falling asleep and then have come back to it to take notes because I'm working on knitting my own garments because I struggle so much with overheating between medications, medical issues, and my gender transition, plus... I live in a humid af area, so this has been so wonderful and helpful. you said unhinged and I was prepared for something much weirder (i've been on tumblr too long) but instead it was the best and most realistic discussion of yarn types and thoughts on knitwear patterns.

Great quadrant analysis! My go-to dumpling zone knits only use bamboo or linen. I love both of them although bamboo is so much easier on the hands to knit with than linen. And like you I find Knitting For Olive pure silk too hot, so wear those in spring and late summer/early fall.

This video made my day! I hate summer so anything above 18-20 degrees Celsius feels like hell to me. Hopefully I live in a rather cold climate and we get looooots of wind so those 2 summer months are manageable. Not pleasant but I can live with that. Your summer quadrant should be taught at schools, I swear! I can soooo relate to everything you’ve said. I agree with you on several fronts. My Moonset Tee fit me terribly. I love how it looks on other people, but I will never remake it. I think I knit a size too big even though I got gauge and used her recommended size. Also, I find the KFO cotton merino very fuzzy. It left lint everywhere. I think it’s actually 70% cotton and only 30% wool.

So far i haven't knitted a lot of summer stuff, but I have done some crochet tops and kimono style cardigans (lots of holes) that work fine for temps of around 30C. Mercerized cotton and viscose have been the most successful for me...I can't imagine knitting anything for summer with any % of wool in the yarn!🥵 that Cumulous blouse in silk sounds like a great project for next summer

Cumulus Tee I think is an essential. Kast year I knitted 2 one in Truboo (it is DK) and one in Go Handmade by Hobbii Tencel Bamboo (fine) i like both the Truboo is quite heavy for july in NYC. I am planning to knit another one in Tynn Line or Antigone or Sparrow. I made the peacock tee on Line and it was vey nice to knit in and it doesn't feel heavy like truboo or splits 🙄. OMG, I love your chart! I LOATHE summer. I can't stand heat, everything bites me and then I react - best case a red lump, worst case an itchy red lump. I get hay fever and I burn easily. Sometimes with polymorphic light eruptions, (PLE or itchy lumps from sunshine), just to put the cap on everything. Oh, and I don't adjust well to the clocks changing. But I start to be unable to wear knits around about early April (in the UK!), no matter the yarn, and can't even think about them again till roughly October. I really, really ought to get a different hobby, but what can you do? So, if I knit 'summer' tops it's basically to wear in October and March, roflmao!

after this super insightful video, my question is, is there a chance to make a top like the camisole n5 that's supposed to be stretchy and near your skin but that's wearable in hot climates? Like using a yarn that's cooler but doesn't get stretched out? would elastic do the trick?
@KnitwithJuliette
@KnitwithJuliette Ай бұрын
This is super helpful and a hilarious format!! Also for the cotton merino it’s actually only 30% wool and the rest is cotton, maybe that’s why you were having the elasticity issues with the camisole no 5. I think Filcolana has a 50/50 cotton merino that might be more suitable

I'm not too sure if summer knits even make sense anymore -- at least for me. I've knit two summer tops in cotton and both are too heavy to wear in summer. I'm halfway through the Avani shirt and I'm making it out of silk so it's lighter but might show too much skin, so I'm thinking I just need to knit sweaters for fall and winter and stop it with the summer knits.
