Absolutely brilliant Graham, the castle really pops out now, it will be even better with the taller back scene. I can just imagine walking around the castle then having an ice cold pint in the pub. The tunnel for the canal boat is a great idea, that will look amazing, lots of hard work there my friend. Cheers Martin

Wow, thank you Martin for those very kind words indeed sir, they are as always, greatly appreciated. Hopefully when complete then it will add another focal point to Lakeside and also give me few more camera angles to shoot from when doing a running session. There’s a lot going on in that corner with obviously the castle and grounds to visit, then a nice pint in the pub with maybe a Sunday lunch to go with it and then a nice stroll along the canal to finish the day off - well that’s how I see it working anyway! 😉. Cheers mate. ………….Graham

Fantastic, Graham! Nice recycling as you have done and it looks excellent. The bridge and gate with the canal going through is epic. The concept on the scenic with the pub and the castle is already standing out. Always a pleasure! Cheers!

Wow, thank you Colin, that’s really kind of you to say. I don’t consider myself as being talented or at all clever, I just look at what’s around me and try to emulate what I see and not being afraid to have a go, if it doesn’t look right then I start again. There are far more talented folk out there than me and you only have to look at the big boys on KZfaq to see that but I’m happy with what I have and I thoroughly enjoy myself in the process which for me is the most important thing - if you’re going to have a hobby then it needs to one that you enjoy - and this hobby certainly does that for me. 👍🏻. Great looking castle sat proud upon the hill. I am just about to restart my model rail journey after a 50 pause. (I know, that sounds a very long time) So I am viewing loads of channels to get ideas and advise as a lot of things have changed in the intervening time. Once ready I will set up a dedicated YT channel for information gathering and to document my return.

Hi and thank you for the comment and that’s pretty much what I did, it pays to do a lot of research and YT is a good place to start, gleaming information, techniques and products available now which weren’t around 50 years or so ago. I have learnt a lot over my brief time building this layout with YT being the largest source of information. Good luck in your quest and I wish you all the best for your new layout when you start. Hi Richard and thank you so much for the kind comment, I must admit that I’m pleased with this area of the layout now that I’ve reached this stage, it’s worked out exactly as I had planned a few months ago and more importantly, it now gives me the starting point to finish off the two unfinished sides of the layout - the end where the road comes down from the high street to the pub and castle and of course the long side of the canal and lake. Get those two sides complete and the layout will look pretty much complete - even though we all know it will never be complete! 😂. Cheers. ……….Graham

Looking good matey. Minor technicality, if the horse is changing side there is normally a gap to pass the tow line through in the bridge.
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston Жыл бұрын
Hi Des, yeah I know that mate, the problem is I need to make the canal that width and the bridge is a fixed width - it’s called a compromise. I don’t think I will have any horses falling into the canal and even if they did, they would just be plastic ones so they wouldn’t come to any harm. 😂😂😂. Cheers. ……….Graham

Graham, your use of the castle is inspired! It's not an easy item to add to any model railway - even a large one - but I think you have smashed this! The canal remains a point of great interest for me. I guess having the mini undercarriage on the barge means that the water will need to be quite level to allow for ease of movement. Interesting to see how you deal with that and ensure realism. Still water runs deep though!
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter and thanks for the comment. Now that I’ve built the castle then I think it sits nicely on the layout which was one of the things I wasn’t sure of until I had built it, linking it to the canal and using it as a scenic break for the canal helps. The lock gate and the canal either side of it are I have no doubt, going to be tricky but I like things that push me, they are a pain but when I pull them off - like the lift on the platform, then I get a great feeling of accomplishment, that’s what I’m hoping for with the lock gate and canal - we can only wait and see what happens. 👍🏻. Cheers. ……….Graham

Hi Graham , well done with the castle , it looks the business. Many years ago I had the same thoughts about some sort of vehicle to transport people up a hill to a country manor on my layout . @GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston Жыл бұрын
Hi Frank and thanks for the comment, I think I have several options open to me regarding the vehicle for transporting folk up to the castle, a couple of people suggested one of those four seater golf buggies which would work, maybe a couple of Landrovers could do the job too which I quite like the idea of - we’ll see, I’ll have to have a hunt around, I may already have something like that already. `Is that all` Graham, wow when you panned back to show your castle it looked spot on and the positioning of the church I feel is correct. Where I live in Dover the castle has a church within it, which can only be accessed from within its grounds. You rightly so should be pride of what you have achieved in this area, don't forget to install a parking meter in the castle car park (lol), a transit minibus perhaps to transport the disabled into the castle. Can't wait to see the canal and working lock in place, take care regards Barry..

Good progress on the lock, Graham. Now you have established the final design specifications by proof of concept, you are now in a position to built the final model for installation. The castle and grounds have come on in leaps and bounds and looks splendid, as does the scenic break solution which is most appropriate for its location. The church on top will add to the illusion by distracting the eye. Looking forwards to seeing further developments. Best, Jason.

Some london stations have large people movers like a stretched golf buggy but i imagine this will be equally difficult to get. Best wishes. Jon

Hi Jon and many thanks for the comment. You’re right, the castle is a wonderful kit and Metcalfe should be taking the praise for producing such a great kit, I just put it together. An extended golfing cart would be ideal but where would I get one from, I suppose I could make one if push comes to shove, that’s something to work on in the future . Cheers. ……….Graham

Thank you so much for those kind words Robin, when that kit came out I knew I wanted it but had nowhere to put it - until now that is! And I’m glad I persevered with the idea because it now links in nicely with the canal. @@robinfrost6240 Hi Robin, yes I did make them, some are made from plaster of Paris poured into moulds made by Woodland Scenics, others are just from Polyfilla I made as a rough rock shape and carved them out to look like rocks. All were then painted with again Woodlandscenics pigments of Earth, Raw Umber, white and a little black. Hope that helps.

Hi Graham, I've been looking forward to seeing how you were gonna fit the castle and lock together. That's come out really nicely. Great work. Have to say I am getting really narked with model railways at the moment. I cannot work out what I am doing wrong with Cobalt IP Point motors and Electrofrog points. What ever I do I keep getting a short when I run trains over the frog and I don't know what I am doing wrong despite watching everything I can reading the DCC concepts instructions over and over. However, enough about my tribulations with model railways. Great to see your layout is coming along nicely. You've done really well with it.

Hi Tim, are you using rolling stock with large wheels? That might be the problem. Otherwise double check your wiring to make sure its correct. I feel for your frustration! Today I have been upgrading old Lima locos and I have been dropping lots of small parts on the floor and then having a big search for them. I found them all but its typical of our hobby! Keep going mate!

@@peterm7548 yeah, I've never used IP point motors before. Whole point was to make it easier and less wires but some how this has turned into a right mission. @GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston Жыл бұрын
Hi Tim and thank you for the kind comment and I’m pleased that you like it so far. As regards the shorts on the points then I can only think of two possibilities that might be causing the issue. One is the wiring is wrong but you say that you have checked this over and over again, so that leads me to suggest that maybe you have not used the plastic insulted track joiners on the frog part of the point. Not sure if you have or haven’t but that’s what I have used, if you have regular track joiners on the frog side of the point then you will get a short - how do I know that? 😳😳. Yep, because I did exactly that and got a short. Let me know if that is the case, if not then I would speak to DCC Concepts, they are very helpful. Cheers. ……..Graham

@@GrahamFoulston Thanks. Yeah, I have plastic joiners. I learnt that after watching your videos. I have take your advice and spoken to a couple of people inc DCC concepts and sent them some info so I am waiting to hear back on the subject. @@LetsGo_41 Well let’s hope that they can sort you out, you know that it’s going to be a simple fix once you found out what it is - it’s just finding out what the issue is and I agree, sometimes model railways can be a bloody nightmare and so frustrating too but it pays back dividends once it’s all up and running! 👍🏻👍🏻

WOW!!! Graham, you have been busy. Everything looks absolutely fantastic. Are you going to incorporate some Magnorail workings in there any where? it would be interesting seeing the shuttle bus going up the hill to the castle grounds!! Also do you have room to put a turntable inside the castle for the canal boat? Or is it going to be "The Hand Of God" to turn the boat around? Keep up the fantastic work. I think it's time I did another video. I've had one "sitting in the can", as they say, for 12 months now. but haven't been able to find the time to work on it! I am building a combined separate Program/Test track at the moment and it's turning out a bit more complicated than I intended it to be, mainly because of my penchant to use bi-coloured LEDs, not the usual 3 pin type, but the 2 pin variety with both colours in the same package. They will be used with mini limit switches on the points throw bars. Enough of my ramblings. Can't wait to see further developments on Lakeside. ... Ian ...

Hi Ian and thanks for the comment and I’m pleased that you like it so far. No Magnorail on this, I think I’ve got my work cut out with the operating lock gate so it’s a case of KIS (keep it simple). The canal barge is motorised so I can drive through to the end of the tunnel and then just reverse it out, the only hand of god will be me picking it up and turning it round to go back along the canal - I’m ok in doing that rather than flaffing around with turntables at the end - can’t be doing with all that. Yes I think it is time for another video, haven’t seen one from you for ages, it’ll be interesting to see what you have done. Cheers. ……….Graham

@@GrahamFoulston Thanks Graham. I had to put things on hold last week as I had a fall and ended up in ED for 6hrs before they were able to attend me. 5 cracked ribs - 3 on the left and 2 on the right, - 3 nights in hospital, came home on Saturday, so been spending a few quiet days. When you're 80 you have to take care of such an injury, and I'm not ready to depart this mortal coil just yet! 😃 So had my daughter on my back to do my deep breathing exercises, 10 deep breaths and exhale every hour, as well as 4 deep coughs. Grrrr! But it has helped not so sore now, another 3 or 4 weeks and everything should be back to normal. Sorry about my problems, so as soon as I get the circuitry right for what I want to do with the Programming/Test track then I can concentrate on the video, probably combine what I had prepared 12 months ago, and what's happening at the moment. ... All the best. ... Ian
