In this video we are going to explore a cheap, easy and precise way to check the speed (33, 45 78rpm) of our turntable. Whether you decide to use a stroboscopic disc or a smartphone app, this is a fundamental aspect for vinyl high fidelity reproduction!

regarding phone testing: 1) 331/3 = 33.333333333333. the phone showing 33.3 then 33.4 and back is relatively very accurate presentation for 33.333333. 2) The Phone is a hi mass device. for those who would care of the maximal precise testing, the phone has to be placed in the center of the mass' otherwise it ads a slight wow and flutter to the spinning. in the 45 RPM you can notice that the "change in 0.1: is happening precisely on same location (top left of the picture).

Awesome app. very accurate on my LG G5. I've noticed a slight fluctuation after the decimal point; I may just need to level the turntable. I've also considered 3D printing a phone holder/adapter to center the phone on the platter. Turntable is a Sherwood ST-887R. The pitch wheel is very touchy and it's hard to see the mirrors through the little prism window for me sometimes, so another method to double-check with my phone with a large, easily readable number is very handy.

A slight fluctuation is normal and the app non extremely precise so I think you have a good and constant rotation. I wouldn't worry too much.

Thank you for this. I'm new to audio science and have been researching how to read and adjust the pitch of my newly acquired Dual turntable. The app is an absolute gift, turning what I thought might be a complex issue into something simple. My only thought is whether the weight of the device sat offset (i.e. not central) on the turntable may have an adverse affect on the speed. Maybe introducing a slight variation as it turns?

Here’s a great tip, If you can’t hear the speed of a track is off... it’s probably fine and you shouldn’t worry.

I have been round to listen to music at other people's houses where the speed is obviously wrong to my ears but they don't hear it as most people don't have perfect pitch and when you increase / decrease speed all pitches move at the same time and so it doesn't feel out of tune as the relationship between pitches is the same. Having something to reference either audibly or visually is a really really good idea.

DUHH In the day I would always set the speed via a test lp/Tape depending on what I was calibration and a frequency counter. Now I just use the tuner in the phone for instance concert pitch A is 440Hz and the phone is way more accurate than the frequency counter! Just measure using your phone a phrase that has known and on tune notes! Also for reference although the frequency of the mains is locked it does drift a little and is in no way a stable tuning reference. So out goes the strobe and if you do don't use the compact fluorescent as a lot of them do not strobe. PS I find the PAL DVD's disturbing 4% speed up so noticeable both in pace and some times pitch sound track...

at last a very informative video without taking hours to say one thing.also really packed with info congrats!but lets say the speed isnot absolutely perfect as shown ,then..is there something youcan do (at dj turntables) or just stuck with it? thanks in advance
@anadialog
@anadialog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Actually it is very precise. That small fluctuation is due to the phone itself.

Oh! Sorry! Well, it depends. Precision is important but not too hard to achieve. If you don't have a complex vintage turntable in most cases you will have a great stability. In any case, if you don't have speed regulations and you have speed issues maybe you should service the tt. Not much else you can do and it is better not to do it by yourself unless it's just a worn belt or lack or lube.

i put the phone in the middle. just use the single adapter upside down. this eliminates largely the unbalance by the phone.

Its the dynamic force of the unbalanced weight that your cellphone puts on the platter that makes that small instability in 77,9-78 rpm :-) Its supper accurate, theres no flactuation with a 78 record on instead of a cellphone imho :-)

This is what I was thinking too, the phone is weight on only one side of the platter, perhaps a counterweight phone would stabilize it and allow for a slightly more accurate reading, but it hardly seems worth it.

Hi, thanks for the video. Could you explain a little bit better (maybe in another video) how to check the speed with one of those stroboscopic discs? As it turned out, my phone doesn't have that gyro stuff, so the app is useless for me. Also, I do not have a Technics turntable, which has the stroboscope spots on the edge of the platter, and the little light on the edge. So if I get or print out such a stroboscopic sheet, how do I use it exactly, how do I light it, with what? Would be grateful to have some info on that. Grazie molto.

Hi Sorin, try downloading the Strobly app and select 60Hz for America or 50Hz fir Europe...you need a powertfull phone though...otherwise you need to buy a true strobe light...very expensive!

Also, why is the speed not measured with a record on and the needle playing? Surely the drag from the weight of the tone arm would have some impact on the speed! or is it that small it would be imperceivably?
@anadialog
@anadialog 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, no problem. People use 1kg (or more) clamps. The motor adjusts itself (in decent quality turntables).

@@laurynaslauris9677 on a technics sl series, the strobe is triggered by an internal chip, so it doesnt matter if your power is 60 or 50hz. It does matter on many other turntables, and most of the time they have 2 series of dots on the platter to acomodate both frequencies.
@acoustandaudio
@acoustandaudio 2 жыл бұрын
The phone needs to be central on the platter then you won’t get a fluctuation, the fluctuation is due to the weight of the phone on one side of the platter slows is because of the off centre weight.

Hello, I read that up to .10% off the set speed is undetectable, unless your someone with pitch perfect hearing. Sir you have something bolted to the top of your speaker, I’m just curious as to what it is? Peace
@anadialog
@anadialog 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cruzing RXS, yes, I guess that is reasonable. That, although, does not mean we do not want I high fidelity reproduction! I think that maybe we cannot understand if there is a different in the velocity of the reproduction under 10% but the overall experience, compared to true live music, would be somehow perceived. You would like yo know what is on top of my speakers? Check this video out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oq2Vm5CBsd-3d3k.html

ana[dia]log I agree with your comment. I had the rpm app on my phone, and I would like to share the results. My turntable is a project debut carbon, now the readings are 33.32 and 45.04. Unless electronically measured no one could tell that the speed is a hair off. I also watch the video on the super-tweeter. I was going to guess it was either a tweeter or a strobe light...lol. Yes, Sir adding that super-tweeter to your speakers is a good idea. I use to rip my vinyl to digital with a program called audacity. Before initializing the sound wave there was a parameter you had to use that would shrink the sound wave before I could digitizing it. I would see the wave files from the album shrink right before my eyes. Anyway this channel is very good for the vinyl community. Peace

@anadialog
@anadialog 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaun! I thought about that anche checked. The Technics Sl1200g can take 1kg without having any change in speed. In fact that is the maximum weight of a clamp you can use on the platter. This can change from turntable to turntable, especially with weak belt-drive turntables.
