It’s a misinterpreted practicethat continues today. The Word of Wisdom is a suggestion to live a healthy life, and refraining from “hot drinks” probably refers to drinking coffee or tea eavery day as a habitual or addictive practice, which is absolutely unhealthy. Early church members also occasionally drank, although most of them gave up tobacco. It’s been misinterpreted since then to be a complete ban of the things mentioned instead of guidance to avoid overuse. It also mentions to eat meat sparingly if that helps to understand how people have cherry-picked and misinterpreted it.

You assert that William's charges of poisoning have no basis in fact, but where is your evidence? He may have been wrong, but he was there, you weren't. DEUTERONOMY 18:22 tells us directly from God how to know if a prophet is true or not . “But you may wonder, 'How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the LORD? I'd be tempted to disregard Brigham's accusation, except for two things: 1. there were so many accusations of poisoning at Nauvoo that it seems plausible. 2. the LDS champion both Emma and Brigham today, so it demonstrates the reality that they can't hold onto both.

@@bryanpratt5850 You've got to look at the motives behind lying. If you lied one time about kicking a dog when you were 7, then does that mean that you commit perjury each time you open your mouth? Of course not. Polygamy wasn't considered proper back then (as it is now). Emma was embarrassed by the fact that her husband practiced polygamy, so she lied about it to cover his dead butt. Does this mean that she poisoned Joseph? No. Does this mean that she didn't? No. Those are independent events. Now, did Brigham have a reason to dislike Emma? Yes. She was bringing his authority into question- and it centered around the polygamy issue. Emma earlier in life had been against polygamy, and in fact, Joseph had to disband the Relief Society because she was going against him and bashing polygamy and convincing women to avoid it at all costs. So, since Emma was such a large figure in the church and she went against polygamy that was a strong basis for a lot of the Brigamite sect's doctrines, then Brigham, wanting to shore up his validity in the eyes of the members, disparaged Emma by blaming her for a very real poisoning event. Now, the Mormon church today, as it was then, is still very messed up. But just because something fits with a narrative you want to tell doesn't make it a reality. It's like my belief about how tall Martin Luther was determining my ability to do physics. They are two independent events, and for those that cannot tolerate ambiguity and have an agenda (like Brigham did towards Emma) they will distort reality to fit a certain narrative. So, most Christians in America will believe every bad thing about Mormons they hear, because it fits the narrative that Mormons are wrong and a perversion of Christianity. Just because one bug was found in an In-and-Out burger, doesn't mean that every burger has a bug- or that animal style fries are garbage. @@debwilliamson2447 Look… I have studied Smiths life and the time period and the culture of the day in great detail. That is how I know it’s a lie. The book of mormon would have looked convincing to the people of the 19th century. That is how Smith built his religious celebrity. Not so today. Today we can see that thematically Smith definitely stole from Ethan Smiths Book of the Hebrews, and other books such as The Book of Napoleon and other literary works available to Smith at the time. We know also that Smith tried to insert himself as a prophet into genesis in his translation of the bible. We know ALSO that the foreword of the bom was changed to read that native Americans Indians are no longer the direct descendants of Lamanites. It now reads that the Indians are AMONG THE DESCENDANTS. Why did they change it? Because more and more DNA evidence is proving that narrative to be false and the church fears litigation. Notice how that narrative is not pushed anymore? Don’t get me started on the first vision. The 1832 version recounts that smith saw Christ only. By 1838 he saw Christ and God himself. Is that something you would forget! Then there are all the FACTS around Smiths sexual dalliances with other women behind Emma Hale Smiths back like their 16 year old house maid Fanny Alger. You can of course believe in what you want but why believe and be in darkness when the truth is there. And there's so much more. Like multiple first vision accounts and the discrepancy of one then two personages as Joseph changed his view on the Trinity. The 1830 version of the Book of Mormon is loaded with Trinity references until the 1837 version wiped away those passages. Then we have the translation of the Book of Mormon involving no golden plates but rather the seer stone in a hat method. The same seer stone Joseph never returned to another treasure hunter, which is what Joseph used it for. Joseph went on trial for deceiving people as a treasure digger. And a seer is not a prophet. Seers are of the occult. Don't forget Joseph's quotes about doing more than Jesus for mankind. Blasphemy!! Also, the Book of Abraham is a complete fraud. The church excommunicated people for saying as much for a very long time. But now the church will NOT excommunicate for it. The brethren know it's a fraud. There are only two people left who are apologists for the church regarding the Book of Abraham. The rest have switched positions. John Gee and Carey Muhlstein are the only two apologists. The church wants them to stop. It's an unwinnable position. Gee was taken off the Neal A. Maxwell Institute. And Reformed Egyptian? No such thing. Joseph can't be a prophet when he doesn't know who the Godhead is. Brigham Young can't be a prophet either. A prophet of God knows who God is. Brigham taught God the Father was Adam in the Garden of Eden. He also labelled it a salvation issue. And the so called mormon prophets of the 20th century go against all of that.
