Pike is one of the most powerful members of Vox Machina in this situation because fighting the undead is what Clerics and Paladins excel at. The radiant damage many of their attacks do cause extra damage against many undead. It doesn't cause extra damage against powerful undead like Sylas, but it does prevent his vampiric regeneration. They have the acid room to refine whitestone into residuum. :) Little backstory explanation: It isn't often shown in the show (Keyleth healing Cassandra in episode 8 being an exception) but most magic spells require spell components to perform (Verbal, Somatic (gestures) and/or Material. This is related to the Material components). They can vary in how widely available and valuable they are, so some spells are really hard to cast even if you know them, because you need rare and/or really expensive materials. Residuum is a universal reagent, meaning it can replace (almost) any spell component for magic spells, as well as amplifying magical effects (which is why Delilah has a residuum necklace, and why her Raise Zombie spell affected so many people - she had large residuum crystals all around her when she cast that spell). However, Whitestone is the only known place where you can make residuum, by mining the mountains in and around Whitestone and then refining it (grinding the stone into a powder, then soaking it in a powerful acid to harden it into residuum crystals). The De Rolo's were quite literally sitting on a resource worth more than gold, and Anders wanted to increase the production of it so he could get money and renown as a scholar, instead of being relegated to be a "mere tutor" for noble kids (flashback in episode 8). After the Briarwoods took over, they funded Anders research and built the structure below the castle that allowed them to refine whitestone into residuum both more efficiently and on a larger scale. Getting access to residuum was a really nice bonus for Sylas and Delilah, the later in particular as she's a wizard, but it was not the main reason they came to Whitestone. The Ziggurat was. And yeah, Cassandra is a bit conflicted right now, to put it mildly. After she was shot by Dr Ripley during her and Percy's escape attempt when she was 13, the Briarwoods has had 5 years of mixed magical charms and mundane brainwashing/manipulation to make sure Cassandra is firmly in their clutches. It remains to be seen if Percy can reach her and the side of her that still hates the Briarwoods and is happy to see Percy... Or if she's lost forever and he will have to kill her.

Just to clarify. Delilah and Sylas didn't turn evil because she used dark magic. Delilah wasn’t manipulated persay, just incredibly grateful to have her husband saved, and thus worships the entity that gave him back. If a good entity saved Sylas, Delilah would be devout in the same way. And Sylas is just the embodiment of "happy wife, happy life".

Sylas is too valuable because Delilah loves him. It’s not about who’s more powerful, it’s about her willing to do anything for him. She believes in and follows the Whispered One because he saved her Sylas. That’s all she cares about. Sylas, in the meantime, it a trophy husband whose job is to be buff and pretty and love his wife.

"She's this powerful and she isn't even there!" So accurate. During the Briarwood arc (fifteen sessions, each about 4 hours long), in the original campaign, Ashley Johnson was often absent, or at most present via skype (connection "incidents" included), due to work, and she was actually in NY (whereas Critical Role sessions are quite literally on the opposite coast, iirc)

Love how Scanlan is just shredding his fucking heart out in the background as everyone is trying to deal with the acid.

Clerics are especially effective against the undead, and Pike has that big power-up from being in that chamber.

The acid chamber is for refining the whitestone into residium, they need to use the acid to break it down in large amounts.

Vax has 3 magical daggers: The Keen Dagger(extra accurate) The Dagger of Venom(poison dagger) The Flame Tongue Dagger(dagger with extra fire damage)

ahh, yes, she saw the Perc’ahlia hints this episode! gonna love how this slow-burn will be visually adapted for future seasons

Props for being the first reactor I've seen actually acknowledge that Grog's drawers would have been dissolved in the acid if he dove in with them. Everyone else has either just been flabbergasted that he stripped at all or completely no-sold it. Two more! The best is yet to come!

The ziggurat is what they tortured Percy and Cassandra to try finding, but the kids didn't know anything about it, and even their parents might not have- it's directly beneath the sun tree. Ripley restored any regular structural damage as an engineer and figured out how to infuse it with the residuum glass that Anders refined out of the base whitestone using all that acid.

It's called the Fastball special when Scanlan throws his party members into battle with Bigby's (Scanlan's) hand

Grog calling for Scanlan's Hand happened a few times in the campaign. It's a callback to Colossus and Wolverine's Fastball Special from the X-Men comics.

Always love your “I’m Batman” and “Scanlons hand” 😂 Love Pike and Grog - there definitely friendship goals. But we all love your jokes Ange so keep them coming!

Still kinda cool vampire origin story. Never heard of a Witch turning someone to a Vampire.

Pike dropped down riding a lightning bolt like Thor in Wakanda, while at the same time being a remote avatar like Tony rescuing the passengers of the plane and then being ran over by a truck. that, without mentioning the fact that she used her shield like Cap before the stream, and she later on gets the knuckles that turn her into _The Monstah_ Pike is totally a pocket-size Avenger team.

If it's normal, non-magical acid, it would do something like 2d8 (2 - 16) hit points of damage per round (6 seconds). Grog easily had more than 100 hit points. Sure, the acid will kill him, but it wouldn't be quick.

Grog had an Intelligence score of 6 out of possible 30. Travis Willingham played this aspect to perfection.

The Briarwoods were pretty awful even before Silas got sick - that was just the last drop that made Delilah go full-on Evil Queen. Before that she was just a mage doing awful things every now and then.

Fun fact from the tabletop game this show came from. The group would often have scanlan toss someone into the middle of a group or ontop of a larger foe. They would call it the "fast-ball special" which was a reference to X-men when Wolverine would call for a fast-ball special then get thrown the same way Grog did. The group often references stuff like X-men. When Scanlan was teleporting around in a previous episode they would call it "bamfing" around like Nightcrawler.

Imagining Grog proudly saying "call me doctor" hit me harder than I expected and I might have laughed some of the water I was sipping out my nose 😂 It's *exactly* the kind of thing Travis would say. "Why do they keep this acid chamber here?" They said it like 2 minutes earlier in the episode... the acid is used to process whitestone into the drug residuum. As for Grog taking off his clothes... when I was in high school chemistry class, the first day of lab our teacher gave us a whole speech about how important safety equipment was. She demonstrated by dripping some acid onto a sock... which immediately burned a hole through both sides of the sock in about 2 seconds and then kept going. So, yeah, Grog would have lost *all* his clothing if he'd jumped in with it on 😂

22:02 Ripley probably knew Cass was still working for the Briarwoods goals. "We're only keeping you alive because you're useful to us". The we and us in that statement actually means the Briarwoods and herself; by bringing Ripley along, Percys and the rest of the groups attention is entirely on her, so Cass can easily wander unoticed to the other side of the room to trigger the trap.

Delilah is a powerful Wizard, the question is did she go and find the book or to retrieve it? Ripely is arguably worse then Delilah, at least Delilah has a reason for her actions, oh yes Ripely is with out question as smart if not smarter than Percy

So as a long time critter I love your reactions to these episodes. Few fun facts for you, The rifle Percy uses that one time is called Bad News because nothing travels faster. In this adaptation they made the mind control far more pronounced than they did in the campaign. In the game they made it years of Gaslighting and Mental manipulation more than mind control. Grog is a guy who can jump into a pit of acid becasue at this point in the game he had about 140 hitpoints which is alot at that level. You were right on why he took his cloths off because magical equipment woulf have been fine but his clothing isn't magical. Vax has 3 daggers and a special belt that lets them teleport back to him. One of them is a Flametounge Dagger that lights up and can do fire damage. There are so many more easter eggs I could go into but I dont want to actually write a novel taking them all down. Glad you're loving the show

Fun little fact if it's not mentioned already, but Marisha the person who portrays keyleth is married to the mastermind behind all of this Matthew Mercer so her romance with Vax show just how good these voice actors are :D cant imagine it being easy to act out a romance (with a close friend) when yout husband litterally sits on the opposite end of the table!

So, Ashley was on set filming throughout this campaign. That's why she wasn't in there much. But one thing I liked better in the campaign was her struggle to connect to her diety. I understand why thry changed it, but it had more impact in the game Also, one of the highlights was the weird luck that caused Scanlan to destroy his house while the team together was mostly unsuccessful with theirs. It was hilarious

it was actualy for a very long time unclear, if percy was just that messed up in his mind, or if there was an actual evil entity. The actor/player himself did not know but let the dm decide for him which one turned out to be true.

omg that is a very valid point, Why didn't she make a bunch of people like Sylas. Well Spoilers, in the campaign one of the baddies was actually a Vampire The house seige/raid where the team busts in the mansion it was revealed during combat, later Scanlan figured out how he was turned into one which was very interesting, wasn't anything like how Sylas was made.

In the campaign Delilah was just a necromantic wizard but the show paints her as more closely being a warlock and making a Pact of the Book with The Whispered One. Its an interesting direction and honestly makes sense for who she is
