Actually, sloth relatives got into a variety of niche niches. Some lived on the sides of mountains, others bored caves into rock, and others still started living in water trying to be whales. It's only relatively recently those cool dudes went extinct, leaving behind the sloths we know today.

When he mentioned sloths I thought he was going to mention that they shit once a week and it’s like childbirth for them, there’s so much. They don’t do it very often because there are predators on the ground where they do it, and they just can’t let it drop from the tree I guess.
@dragonwithamonocle
@dragonwithamonocle 3 жыл бұрын
I think there was a miscommunication when Sam was doing the reasearch on sloths. The whole "starved on a full stomach" isn't because it takes them so much energy to digest leaves. It has more to do with their gut bacteria, which are highly specialized. Sloths eat basically nothing but the leaves that are their absolute favorites, which, much like your sedentary human, is a very very small selection. So their gut bacteria are extremely specialized to digest ONLY THOSE LEAVES. If a sloth has only been eating leaves from one type of one kind of fruit tree, if you take that sloth into captivity, it'll eat when its hungry, but its gut won't be able to digest or gain nutrients from the incorrect type of leaves. Sloths are actually really hard to preserve in captivity for this reason, and often times "starve on a full stomach" because the scientists didn't observe what leaves it was eating prior to capture. I think sam has misconstrued that as evidence that sloths are stupendously weak animals capable of dying from the effort of digestion, which isn't true. Sloths ARE slow because they're weak, but not in the way you might think. Their physiology has made many sacrifices to be capable of surviving solely on leaves- namely because no matter how big your stomach is, leaves just don't have a lot of nutrients in them. So instead of getting huge and developing (what would be efficient at THAT size) a cow's four-chambered stomach, they opted to just skip arm day instead. And leg day. And abs day. Sloths are relatively incapable of building up what would be considered in most animals "normal amounts of locomotion-related muscle mass" as well as developing an extremely slow metabolism so that the leaves have time to be digested thoroughly enough to provide enough nutrients (again, leaves have almost nothing to them) before becoming emaciated. Sloths just skip the whole "starving to death" thing by being super emaciated in the first place, their bodies already in self-preservation weakened states. They've become adapted to that lifestyle to the point that it's necessary for them to thrive. I don't have this information by my own logic or anything, I have it from scientific essays written by people who did the research themselves, with actual labs and actual sloths. Basically I read. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk, and have a good night.

Sloths are like koalas - occupy an ecological niche that's uncontested and shed all unnecessary biological functions. To paraphrase Ze Frank, the advantage of preying on leaves is that they tend not to run away. The disadvantage is that they're as nutritious as leaves.

As someone who owns ferrets I can say it's pretty difficult for them to get constipated, yes, easier than a dog, but those beasts are basically goats. We've only had one of our ferrets get constipated (ever), turns out they accidentally ate some fabric. Apparently the ferret was able to throw up most of the fabric, he literally was able to vomit on his ceiling. After that he did a poop and the rest came out. Guess we were lucky.

"Stimulate your ferrets" is right. Did you know that female ferrets never leave heat once started unless they are impregnated? It gets so bad that their immune system eventually shuts down and they die. There is a simple way to stave off this problem until such time as you can either have them spayed or bred: lube up a q-tip (water based) and "stimulate" your ferret.

also for the ferrets I'm surprised you didn't bring up adrenal disease, something that's fairly common in fixed ferrets. it's a scary thing- the ferrets are no longer able to absorb calories from the food they eat, so they're pretty much starving. they lose fur, weight. there's two options to fix the issue, but there's no cure- they can go through a life threatening surgery to permanently fix the issue, or they can get a device implanted just under their skin to help their body absorb calories better. I opted for the device. it costs about $250 per ferret (I have two and they both needed the device. my younger ferret wasn't as bad off as my older one, but he still has the disease) and it needs to be replaced every six months.

TLDR: ADHD was cool in the wild, until the evolution of anti-med dads causing their kids to intentionally form depression, anxiety, RSD, etc. Fun fact: ADHD is an evolution that was made to help with hunting. Stimulation issues were so people were always on the move, looking for more prey, shelter, or water. The extra energy was to help scare off predators or rival tribes. Hyperfocus and hypofocus were... well hyperfocus and hypofocus. There were even studies done in two modern tribes, one nomadic and one fixed (no clue why the word is so we're using "fixed"). People with ADHD had a much better time in the nomadic tribe, while they had a damn lot of trouble in the fixed tribe. Today, ADHD doesn't really do much for you other than make you memorize every bit of lore from that one series you just can't take your mind off of; sleep from about 2 am to 5 am; learn random things like cryptography, how to properly and legally commit cannibalism, and the entire field of math that is game theory; and develop various mental illnesses (depression, anxiety, maladaptive daydream disorder, RSD, etc). If anyone has any more questions about how ADHD has changed from an evolutionary revolution to the worst part of many untreated or undiagnosed teens' lives, feel free to ask. I promise, with all the bs my undereducated extended family ask me, nothing you say or ask will come off as insensitive or ignorant.

Also: Ferrets love slightly cooked pumpkin flesh, apparently the unspiced canned pumpkin pie filling is something ferrets love so much that it's often given to them as a home remedy for being clogged or food poisoning (as ferrets can't vomit). They're allergic to the spices of pumpkin spice, though, so definitely don't feed them that.

I've seen a couple big ones lounging in the shallows of a beach in South Africa. They were munching on rays or some other small fish. they would thrash around every now and then to face either inland or out to sea but they were in control of where they were. they were fairly immobile for a few minutes at a time which is why a couple guys went out to see if they were alright but they turned out to be fine. and they were white sharks so they guys got back in sharpish. they went back out after maybe 20-25 minutes. pretty cool actually. so i think it must take more than just stopping moving for a few seconds fpr them to 'drown'. plus the sea has natural currents that they could likely rest in to recover.
