my favorite animal related thing about ancient rome was how they were mystified by the legendary camelopard (as in a camel-leopard hybrid) from beyond the southern deserts. i saw it mentioned a few time before i realized they were talking about giraffes.

The elephant story reminds me of a more recent event where a matador broke down and wept because the bull he put two swords into did nothing to retaliate. There'd a photo of it standing in front of the matador just looking at him as if it was saying "Ow, why'd you do that? ):"

Fun fact: George Lucas re-imagined the existential dread of seeing war elephants for the first time with the AT-AT walkers coming across the snow of hoth. That scene is a direct reference to Hannibal Barca coming down out the Alps to attack Rome. Further fun fact, the number of walkers even represents the Carthaginian attack in numbers. There are only 3 or 4 elephants left to Hannibal by the time the Alps had been crossed, but that was still enough to be psychologically effective. Empire strikes back only shows 3 to 4 walkers and their effect is very similar in the film.

Also, fun fact, rich Romans would eat peacock and oysters when they had guests over. They would also eat a sauce that’s essentially dead fish that’s been left outside for an extended period of time. It was considered a delicacy. You may think that it smells disgusting, and I would have to agree, but Romans used olive oil as soap. I don’t think the smell bothered them much.
