What are the possible complications of ankle fusion surgery & what are the risks of these complications occurring? Ankle fusion surgery (otherwise known as ankle arthrodesis) is a common operation for ankle arthritis, and is a well known ankle operation. It can be very effective if done well, but the risks associated with the procedure should be discussed with your surgeon. Here we outline a few of the more common complications associated with ankle fusion surgery.

I'm a veteran and messed my feet up real good in the service. I also have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so...compromised connective tissue. I have severe JSN of the (this is what the radiologist wrote) naviculocunieformis-or something like that-in both feet. I have had severe pain in my feet for years now. I have had Brostrom re stabilization on both ankles, twice on one of them. I am waiting to see what the MRI tells the docs about all of my connective tissues in my feet. I am so scared to get ANY fusion. I have always been very hyper-mobile and I'm afraid I will miss that wide range of motion...even thought that ROM is what is causing my issues. I just had a hip replacement. I'm only 47. 😥 thank you for the informative videos. 😉

Right ankle fused 10 years ago. No problems yet. Had a great Surgeon......no regrets.

So, when you add all the % percentages together you have over a 46% chance of something going wrong with this type of ankle surgery!

My right ankle refuses to fuse. The surgery has been done twice. We can't figure out why the joint won't fuse. Now, I have a "soft union" and several broken screws. I went to an amazing surgeon. I have the option of attempting it again, or amputation down the road. Right now I'm walking on it just fine, usually with pretty minimal pain and swelling.

I had my Ankle Fusion last July and had 4 debridements from September-December of last year. I still a gaping wound in my Foot that has never healed and yet another deep infection that my doctors refuse to treat. They just want that wound to close and they will be making me see a plastic surgeon to force it close. The chronic nerve pain is SO BAD. But due to my prior drug abuse past, they can only give me Duloxetin. That doesn’t work.

Am 8 months long from my ankle surgery had plate and screws where put i do limp but cant really tell, just wondering when the joint is fused completely does a person limp

I am having my ankle fusion surgery done in 4 weeks . doctor said i will have no pain and be able to walk again.i pray i have no problems.i been dealing with this bad ankle for 3years now i can harld stand or walk

Hi, great video. I'm now seven weeks in post ankle fusion. My second x-ray shows that the top of the fusion shows great bone growth, but both sides of the "mortise" still seem to be showing a lack of bone growth. Is this normal and can I still move ahead at this point and start my minimal weight bearing?

I have head ankle fusion, I am still 33 and can I wear shoes pls tell me, it's been 2 months since my operation.

I had my ankle fusion 3 years ago. I can't stand all day and not able to go walking any more. Pain is unbearable at night

I had both my feet fused 11 months apart. The X-rays online don't look like what my X-rays hmm??

I've noticed that too, all the xrays shown have the screws on an angle, like they're screwed in from the lateral side of the ankle. My fusion was done with anterior screws, which I haven't seen mentioned in any videos yet.
