In this video, I show you how to make a 100% natural cold process soap with orange essential oil, including the process of how to hot and cold infuse botanicals to use in cold process soap.
I made two soaps and swirled them in different ways so you will see both techniques and the results for both cuts. Both swirls are based on the 'To comb or not to comb' technique.
This soap will be for sale in my shop www.IDreamInSoap.co.uk as part of my September update.
Timings
00:00 Introduction
02:00 Making the plant infusions
04:44 What is a 'folded' essential oil?
05:43 Mixing the soap base with the infusions
09:27 Pouring the soap
11:00 Alternative swirl
12:05 CPOP and cutting the 'to comb or not to comb' design
13:50 Cutting the 'Extra swirl' design

Disclaimer
Although my cold process soap making tutorials are of a tutorial nature, they are intended for people who have a good understanding of making cold process soap. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

@@lindahalpern5722 When I used indigo naturalis it didn't give me a good blue colour and faded quite a bit. When I switched to Indigo tinctoria the blue was stunning. I made my sea creature soaps on 30th August, they've all sold, but I also poured off some little samples and today (just looked) the blue is still really great.

THANK YOU so much for sharing ! I am quite keen to keep my soaps natural (for now) and i have purchased the book and thoroughly enjoying reading it; including the link was so helpful! I have run into no ends of trouble making enquiries about indigo though! I have a dyers indigo that is a truly divine blue but cannot get advice from any assessor that it is ok to use so I may need to default to a suitable oxide which i was hoping to avoid.Never mind - I had no idea i could achieve so many different shades from other botanicals so i know im going to have some fabulously coloured soaps 😊

I have been curious about getting colors this way so I am going to purchase that book. The book will tell us how long to wait before we can use it and how often to shake it? Another beautiful piece of art Lisa. Thanks for sharing your love of soap making. 💚

Hey Karen. I've been so pleased with the colours, with the hot infusion you can use them as soon as they're done (i.e after the 4 or so hours) and cold anything from 8 weeks, but you can let hem sit longer, and yes the book goes into all that sort of stuff. I've found it really interesting :-)

HI, so pleased to see you. Ooh I wouldn't like to advise on allergies as I reallly don't know if it would affect you. I'd probably say be safe and not use it. I'm allergic to coffee myself, so I don't make or use coffee soaps, I don't know if they would be ok or not, but prefer to be safe.

Annatto is a great choice for yellow. I used carrots but they did fade. It became a baby yellow. It is one of my favorite soaps. Paprika turned out beautifully! I had heard that cayenne pepper is good for reducing sagging skin but I have not yet been able to make any soap with it. Maybe in the colder months. (Giggles) I have been using essential oils in my soaps while my daughters are using fragrances. It is interesting to see and smell the difference between them. Great video! Hey Corry. I have an Alkanet infusion made and I'm planning to do something with that and indigo very soon. I don't have woad as it is so expensive here that makes it infeasible to use in soap without making the bars really expensive.

Hi Ann, thanks a lot. I have had to pay for a cosmetic assessment for them, just like any others, but as they share the same base recipe it's not a problem, the infused oils just count as one of the extra additives, so instead if say a mica colour as one of my extra, I added however many grams of paprika infused in how much oil taken from base olive oil (botanical strained out) and then the chemist works out what's actually in your formulation from that, then do the same for the annatto.

Ooh how lucky. With the paprika is forms into a pretty solid lump at the bottom of the jar, so you could just pour the oil our carefully, I did actually strain mine just to make sure there were no specks. I did strain the annatto, but that's fairly big seeds, so very easy to catch everything. I hope yours turns out brilliantly.

Also- if you or others used the soaps, were there noticeable differences in your skin over time from using the herbal infused oils? I think with a lot of things in soap the benefit rarely come into the final bar as saponification is so harsh on the ingredients, so usually when you hear people talking about the benefits of an ingredient, apart from it being illegal to make any sort of claims, normally those benefits don't come through and if any did they would be unlike to have an effect as soap's a wash off product.

This is the scale I use, it’s fab (I use the little precision bit all the time). I haven’t added a purchase link as I’m in the UK so my link may not be of any use, but anyone who I have recommended the scale to before has been able to find it easily once they know what it is www.salterhousewares.co.uk/heston-blumenthal-precision/salter-heston-blumenthal-kitchen-scales/heston-blumenthal-dual-precision-scale.html. I don't know how to show a picture of my curing rack as we can't add pictures, but yes it's just some shelves the width of bars of soap , I got them spaced out 1 bar high, so that's 20 shelves, squeeze into a little space on the wall :-)
