Annoying Noisy Car Wiper Blades...Should you CLEAN or REPLACE

Hi, this video shows noisy, squeaky windscreen wiper blades and different attempts to fix them.
I have heard that rubbing alcohol or white vinegar will soften the rubber to remove the noise, so in the video I test them out.
By the end of the video you will hear that the noise has gone but will the cleaning work or is it best to replace the blades when the rubber starts to go hard.
Many thanks Vince

Biggest problem is that the rubber takes a "set" in the down position and doesn't flop both ways. Then it wipes down but chatters on the up sweep. Blade manufacturers need to make a rubber compound that doesn't develop a "memory".

Windscreen rain repellent solution on the windscreen silences noisy wiper blades plus at around 50 mph+ the wipers can be turned off completely even driving through heavy rain. Worn linkages can also cause noisy blades even with new blades.

With so many wiper blade sellers, your £30.00 purchase was expensive. Many online retailers are selling A939S for around £20. If your are going to replace wiper blade it is important to thoroughly clear the windscreen. As most contaminants are greasy try a good kitchen degreaser with the wipers off the vehicle, this also makes cleaning the screen easier.

Hi @@tejaspadhye Thanks for your reply. If your wiper arm is applying excessive pressure onto the wiper blades, see if you can find a wiper blade with a lower mounting point, some wipers have bulky attachments, these are good for older cars and can compensate for the lack in wiper arm pressure. @simpleinverso8628
@simpleinverso8628 3 жыл бұрын
I have an old ford expedition and the rear wiper actually does that. As such, it has managed to work for far longer than it should. I think the mechanism to lift them up shouldn't be too complicated, probably a little "ramp" in which the arm slides off and on, and lifting it a few millimetres when in the off position.

The solution is to slide the rubber out and reinsert it from the opposite end. The rubber is meant to wipe and drag like a paint brush. But when they have been sitting against the glass for months, their shape is distorted and they try to cut into the glass causing squeaking and shuddering. Installing from the opposite end restores their shape against the glass and normal operation.
@edwardmmanns7454
@edwardmmanns7454 5 жыл бұрын
I agree if that is possible to do. I have found that you need to gently and in small increments try bending the whole arm using a padded adjustable wrench...pliers are hard to hold tight. Turn one way or the other as needed. Even though this works well I find I need it done again with a new pair. Now back in the old days, I would install a new blade on the drivers side and keep moving the old one to the passenger thus using one new blade at a time. But today many of the blades are different length for each side.

No matter which way I start twisting it seems the wrong direction...
@AMTattersall
@AMTattersall 5 жыл бұрын
Edward M Manns I don’t recommend twisting but the frame needs to be flat to glass as manufactured. To understand how the rubber blade should work, with your right hand wipe right to left with your palm and left to right with the back of your hand. Imagine your hand is a paint brush. The rubber edge should always trail across the glass like the end of a brush. When the rubber has lost its shape because it has been sitting too long against the glass it will squeak and shudder. Pulling the blade out and feeding from the opposite end of the frame will in a day or so put the rubber back to original shape eliminating the noise.

You made one big mistake. Windshield contaminants kill wipers and can render them ineffective. Give it a good scrubbing using soap and a plastic scrubby sponge. Follow with a razor blade scraping, then alcohol wipe. An occasional clay bar cleaning also helps and is worth the effort. After that, coat with either aquapel or Nano hydrophobic coating and you’ll find wipers are rarely even needed. Also space wipers off of a hot summer windshield as the heat accelerates rubber set & hardening.

I am impressed on many features of your video. 1. You tried all methods available. 2. When one method didn't succeed, you kept it as part your video. 3. You included the American audience by informing us that Rubbing Alcohol is the same as Surgical Spirits. 4. You know when to bite the bullet (spend money).

Only he didn't try all solutions. Twisting the arm can help and so can wd40. Surgical spirits or conifers certainly won't work

WOW! WD40!!!! Last time I bought blades was 4 years ago. Every year before the weather turns cold I remove my blades and soak them in WD40 overnight. I use the long plastic tray that the wipers come in, fill that up with wd40. Guaranteed not to squeak! Try it!

Especially if you bought them from a "dealer" = "killer" they should perfectly work.

Get a 3000 grit sandpaper sheet for 50p rub it against the blade gently not only will it clean the hard grime on the blade edge but also even the worn out bits to even level and your done....

It looks weird watching cars that the driver is on the right hand. lol. Ignore me, I’m in America but understand this video is from Europe. 😉

It could be the angle of the blade relevant to the screen , should be 90 degrees and then should flop over and flop back.
@norman7179
@norman7179 5 жыл бұрын
Biggest problem is that the rubber takes a "set" in the down position and doesn't flop both ways. Then it wipes down but chatters on the up sweep. Blade manufacturers need to make a rubber compound that doesn't develop a "memory".
@bonkeydollocks1879
@bonkeydollocks1879 5 жыл бұрын
@@norman7179 yes , altering the angle perpendicular to the screen helps , a couple of degree's either before or after 90 degrees to the screen . SLIGHTLY twisting the torsion of the arms achieve this . this stops noise even with knackered blades . new blades will not cure a chatter but adjusting the perpendicular angle will always cure chatter but not smears , smears mean new blades.

I bought my $50+ blades 8 months ago, and they're shit now. I'm thinking of putting either wax or RainX on the windshield *_AND_* the blades to get them to stop making noise. I am *_ABSOLUTELY NOT_* spending $100 a year on wiper blades. No way. There's no how.

Heinzkitz Velvet wipers noise is not related to the wipers. It’s because of dirt on your glass. Get some ready mixed windshield wash fluid. The noise will go from the first squirt of it I’m sure

I've sussed it out... 1, drink the rubbing alcohol, 2, put the vinegar on a bag of chips that you can buy on your way down to Halfords. 3, don't be a stingy bastard and just buy a decent set of Bosh blades... 4, put new blades on and drive yourself down to A&E to get your stomach pumped

I don't think alcohol is good for cleaning blades bc the rubber must be dehydrated in order to wipe clean alcohol makes stuff dry

Rubber becomes petrified looses oils solvents accelerate it.. They’re only solvents that actually add oil back that are only available through the industry best case scenario change your blades before you get a scratch or any other damage to your windscreen
