Robert Easton, who plays creepy Dan, and also wrote the script, was a highly respected actor with a 60-year career. He was also the world's greatest authority on regional accents in American English, and for that matter expert on all the world's English accents. His career as a voice coach was far more lucrative than his acting career.

I'm pretty sure he (Robert Easton) is also the leader of the locals with pitchforks in the flashback sequence in 'The Touch of Satan' ("moisturizes your hands while you do the dishes") - in fact, I think the MST3K riffs the mob leader saying "you been hittin' the BOOZE agin!" a la this movie

IIRC the biggest spider was a Volkswagen Beetle with a spider "costume" draped over it. The headlights were the spider's large yes, which is why they glow so bright. Inside the small car, a bunch of people controlled the legs. The whole contraption was burned for the final scene, but remains of the burnt-out chassis can still be found in the area where it was filmed.

This is actually a pretty good movie, or at least it's no Monster a-Go-Go. It does move along, and the characters are interesting in a kinda sleazy and/or boozy sort of way. And it's got some ambition. Car crashes, actual practical giant spider props.... No, they're not convincing, but it beats "Suddenly, there was no monster."
@MrJohndoakes
@MrJohndoakes 2 жыл бұрын
It took two directors to make "Monster a-Go-Go" and that awful ending was Herschell Gordon Lewis throwing up his arms and saying "The movie is over an hour long and I don't give a crap." Bill Rebane would have set the monster on fire or something.

@@Barada73 To put this "spider' on the same level as Tarantula, Them or the Black Scorpion... brought to life by way of process shots, puppets and stop motion respectively.... or even BIG's Earth Versus the Spider.... yikes.... is an insult to the concept of special effects. My own personal pick for "Best Giant Spider" will always go to The Incredible Shrinking Man. It's a man sized spider because it's a spider sized man so what they did was sell the background using special sets... oh right, that's what they did in Lord of the Rings. The spider was CGI but the technique to sell it is older than film itself.

@@tskmaster3837 I am fascinated by your comment that comparing these special effects with the other special effects you mentioned was insulting to the concept of special effects. why? I grew up in the 70's and I wasn't impressed by any of the films you mentioned or their special effects. I am not an expert and don't care to argue, so I am really just interested in your own opinion as to why the effects you mentioned should be seen in - what - another category of special effects altogether? I remember seeing this in the drive-thru when it first came out. Mark's video on this could have easily been twice the length and would have been just as funny and interesting. When you consider the cast alone, he could have gotten a lot more mileage out of it. Alan Hale Jr. (the skipper from Gilligan's Isle), Leslie Parrish (starred in many movies and TV shows, including Star Trek TOS), Barbara Hale (from Perry Mason), Robert Easton (also many movies and TV shows), a lot of actors who had a successful career at one point and probably just accepted their roles in this movie for financial reasons.

Oh, okaaay, THATS where I've seen that drunkard. She was in the Star Trek episode Who Mourns For Adonis. Costume designer William Theiss created a gown for her that had a length of fabric that draped over her breasts and over her shoulder to form a cape. She wore no support and her bare back was visible. The only thing that held the front in place was the weight of the cape. Shatner and rest of the men in the cast were constantly worried the thing would slide off. The actress Leslie Parrish got kick out of them being nervous but said it was an extremely comfortable and secure costume.

Thanks Mark, I've never even heard of this one. I love the giant spiders! The filmmakers may have had a tiny budget, but they really put it all up on the screen. Re the poster...have you seen the hand-painted movie posters made by artists in Africa? They're AMAZING. If you do an image search for "African movie poster" you'll find a ton of them - it's a whole art genre. Apparently the artists almost never get to see the movie in advance, so they're working from a few photos or even just a title, plus their own imagination, so you wind up with a cross between an old-fashioned movie poster and a fever dream.

Arachnophobia is still the scariest spider movie of all time and it was made over 30 years ago. Most of the jump scares still hold up and the fact that they used real spiders for most of the film still makes my skin crawl a little bit. This travesty on the other hand, is just comedy. That huge spider puppet is used to houses all over the US for Halloween decorations now.

I vividly remember watching Arachnophobia as a kid and even as an adult I still think it's incredibly creepy and effective. The stuff like the guy getting but in the tent or the guy finding the dead spider in the box of snacks have always stuck in my head lol

Derrick wiped-out half of my town with a 12 megatons hydrogen bomb to save me from a boring family dinner. Thank you, Derrick! The "Red telephones are hot" scene looks like something you can expect in a spoof movie like The Naked Gun.

"While attempting to film a scene where the spider explodes, the effects team covered the prop with gunpowder and had a crew member attempt to ignite it with matches. Despite using the entire matchbox, the spider did not explode and Rebane decided to stop filming. Immediately after they stopped, the spider exploded, causing two crew members to get their hair singed and be taken to the hospital to be treated for severe burns." I can't even ... 🤦‍♀😂

I like this concept of a disruptive event opening up a doomed dimension with horrible spiders. I think I'd try to make a movie like this with the style of Gremlins 1, only with nightmarish spiders of different kinds. They'd be really die hard, but still getting blasted by townsfolks having bigger survival instincts than them. Would be cool, you'd get: house sized spider, acid spewing spider, tree flying spider, spider shooting people with hair pins as sharps as needles, subterranean digging spider laying traps...

15 years ago I found a 70s shirt that really looked good and fairly modern. Then I realized that polyester doesn't need to be ironed and well...thats a game changer. I now seek them out and have 10 or so. Love those shirts. I have 1 that has that repeat pattern but it's an authentic Harley Davidson and is completely bad ass. Dude, YOU DON'T HAVE TO IRON THEM
