Truck and Trailer Tuesday!
Our newest dream trailer was purchased to haul two of our pieces of equipment at the same time; therefore, we needed a wider and longer trailer. We choose the BWise 28' power dovetail trailer with hydraulic jack (the Hyjacker). Tractor Time with Tim reveals why he ordered this trailer and how it fits the needs of our business.

Tim, Congrats on the new trailer. I have a landscape company and haul heavy equipment daily. I would honestly contact the DOT officer again and get some clarification. I have been to many checkpoints and watched them give large fines for what you are talking about. You are correct that you need to stay under the 26,001LB weight to stay away from CDL and DOT numbers. However, you are over loading the trailer if you load how you plan too. You need to stay within the weight limits of the trailer. If the trailer has a GVWR of 14,500 and weights 5,360lbs you only have 9,140 lbs of payload weight you an put on that trailer. Just because you can "shift" some of the weight to the truck does NOT count. You will be under CDL and DOT weights, but you WILL get a ticket for an over loaded trailer. They will look at the GVWR on the trailer and then how much each item weighs on the trailer. Just a friendly heads up that there might have been some miscommunication with the DOT officer. We haul and drive this equipment daily. Good Luck!!

Nope. They weigh the tandem axles of the trailer, and they weigh the truck axles separately.

Congratulations on the new trailer, It looks like a fine piece of equipment. It's nice to see all your hard work is allowing you to expand your equipment which will in turn give you the ability to do more projects for folks which will result in more videos, more views, and more growth for the channel which of course will allow for more equipment to be added which will enable more projects... Its a wonderful vicious cycle.

A powered dovetail is so nice! It will save your health in the long run. I wore my back out manhandling those heavy ramps for years. Now I’m bolted together with titanium rods and screws. Your back salutes you sir!

Fantastic presentation of a great product. I didn't really know what I was looking for when I bought my car hauler. It suits me pretty well, but I have found a few shortcomings. Your new deck-over checks ALL the boxes. Looks like a purchase you will not regret. Like they say, buy once, cry once...

These BWise trailers are awesome. I have a BriMar dump trailer that I purchased in 2003 because I was seeing that if I was going to continue heating my house with wood I needed to get some hydraulics involved as my son was going to be off to college in a few years besides the fact that unloading wood from a non dumping trailer is as much work as loading. I have been using a carryall 3pt attachment on my Kubota BX2200 to load logs into my trailer (unfortunately at the time I purchased my tractor I didn't get a bucket mainly due to having nowhere to store it when not being used). But as I'm getting order I think I'm going to need some hydraulics for both the front jack & tail gate. Thanks for showing these products. The guidance for tie downs has been valuable.

TimRun your chain through the stack pocket and back to the top of the stack pocket. It will not come loose if you hit bumps or load shifting. I've been pulling equipment for years and this little detail will save you in the long run. Also make sure you grease the pivot pins in your dovetail, also make sure your electrical wiring stays protected as your trailer gets some miles on it.

In the past couple weeks, the PA State Police DOT cop has had dually pickups pulled over that were carrying custom food trailers over for inspection. The trailers are enclosed and with a stainless steel ventilator on top, so I assume they are food prep trailers that might go around to local fairs and what not. They are really cracking down on commercial trucking here in PA. So, many wrecks on the Interstate recently. Be safe out there on the highway. BTW, your trailer ramp reminds me of the USAF C-5 Galaxy cargo plane that I road in while in the Air Force. It looks very well engineered.

You should wrap chain around the entire stake pocket instead of through the hole. It gives you twice the weld to hold load and distributes weight to all four corners of the pocket instead of two on one side. I used to drive for TMC flatbed and our security requirements was 1.5 times what DOT required.

Tim, have you consider dropping the chain hook through the stake pocket, then attaching the hook to the top of the stake pocket? I find the hook is less likely to bounce loose rather than when the hook is attached to the chain. Gravity helps hold the chain hook in place. Nice looking trailer. I'm envious!
@Chadfarmingandcranes
@Chadfarmingandcranes 5 жыл бұрын
I have seen stake Pockets Bend or get the weld ripped from them when using only one side of the pocket as an anchor plus that puts a lot of strain on the link of chain that is right on the bottom wrapping around so what I do is go down the outside of the stake pocket underneath and up the other side of the stake pocket all on the outside that provides strength by utilizing both sides of the pocket and the welds and reduces the stress on the chain by not having such a tight corner to make.

something for you to look into. Does B-Wise have a rating for their stake pockets> you also need to take that into the factor when securing to them. I know Utility, Mac, Retenar and Transcraft state that stake pockets are not to be used for securment, instead they have spools in their rub rail for securment.

Now that is one nice looking trailer. I agree that you need to stay under 26 000 lbs. Having to have a D.O.T. number is a real pain in the butt. I had one and I would get bills from states that I never traveled to. Annual fees. Ya right more like "Hey where is our cut of your action" fee. Good luck with the trailer guys. Exactly what I've seen done and have found to be very effective. It is convenient and a nice safety feature because the hook simply doesn't unhook on it's own even if the chain goes slack. The killjoy would be if the throat of his hooks are not big enough to slip over the stake pocket steel. Very nice trailer Tim & Christi. Looks very useful.
