Another look around in the Cabin

I have done some more work inside the cabin so I decided to do another short video of the interior. All of the tongue and groove pine panelling is up on the walls and ceiling and the stove boards are installed, still waiting for the chimney though. The futon that I ordered online from Walmart arrived and I'm very please with it, really surprised at how comfortable it is. Also a look at a few items that I have bought or have been given to me for use in the cabin.

Thank you. This green man is very special given to me by a good friend and fellow gardener who had it on her home for many years she recently sold her home and is moving away. She also had a collection of Saint Fiacre sculptures, sketches etc. and gave my one of them which I added to the cabin wall after I made this video.

Thank you very much. Maybe you can do this I never thought I could do it either until I tried. I'm sure carpenters would shake their heads at some of my work and methods but I'm satisfied with the result. I've told many people if I was hiring a carpenter I wouldn't hire me but I do work for food. LOL

Dale Calder yes, a great looking little cabin. I also like the Thoreau cabin, and have been thinking of 12 by 16, with 2 by 6 walls to provide for insulation as I will be living in it at least seven months out of the year in Alaska. Have you felt that you are missing out with the unused loft space that you opted away from?

Thank you. I was surprised at the quality of the futon given the low price. The little stove is a compromise this fall because money is running out on the cabin project the stove that I really want is made in eastern europe is also very small but has an oven and you can see the fire through a glass door, over $1,000.00, maybe next year. I wanted to do baked beans in it so maybe in the potjie, I've done them many times in my slow cooker.

Thanks Brendan I'm not sure yet what the final position of the stove will be. I want the chimney to come in through the wall rather than the roof so the stove needs to be positioned so the chimney can come in between two studs in the wall.

It could still be done because the stove can rotate under the right-angle in the pipe that goes through the wall so it could go between the first and second or second and third studs from the corner.

I haven't kept an accurate record but somewhere between 4 and 5 thousand and that is just materials. The same size building could be built for less money doing it alone I used shiplapped lumber for the walls and pine boards for the roof instead of dimensional 4X8 sheets, just because they are very hard to deal with if you are working alone. Also a lot of money could be saved finishing the inside with sheetrock instead of knotty pine.

You have already heard of them! I hadn't heard until last month & the one the man in the video used was around $100. and he was very satisfied with it. I have never known of anyone that had one, but they had 5 stars as it's rating on the site on the internet and the man liked it. I never thought of it freezing, because my mind set with "on demand" water heaters freezing wasn't a problem, I'm sure I'm wrong and you probably do "know". Your cabin is so nice and you did a really good job building it. I enjoyed your videos when you were building it and now camping in it!!! I wondered before how your plants (such as pepper & onion) can dry when it is freezing out there? Give Angel a hug for me please! LOL Judie

Thanks I agree the potjie is south african in origin and there is a dutch history in south africa so I would say they modified the dutch oven. I like the size most dutch ovens are quite large but this is a nice medium size hopefully the wood stove will be operational in a day or so and I will be able to start using it. It is also called the missionary pot it is the same shape that you always see in cartoons with missionaries being cooked in them.

You've done a super job. May I make another suggestion please? Would it be worth considering turning the stove 45 degrees so that it faces out from the corner? You have a dead area between the stove and the wall so turning it would make access easier and free up some wall length. I bet you have already gone over all this though. I keep assessing things based on my own medical limitations now, and to come, so I sometimes go overboard.

Hi Doug this is the link to the plans that I used cottagelife.com/20162/diy/projects/how-to-build-a-bunkie As you can see I modified them some. I incorporated the porch area into the cabin to make more room and I didn't make the roof quite so steep because I didn't want the loft area to be used as a sleeping area due to safety concerns with the wood stove. With the steep roof there wasn't room enough to put in an egress rated window as a fire escape so I still have a low loft which is great for storage and I hope to have solar power maybe this year so it will be a good place for the battery etc. I also put both windows on the south side of the cabin which makes it much brighter inside and provides some warmth from the winter sun.

I don't know if you will even get this comment considering you made this video in 2012, here goes....there is a butane tank instant on hot water heater that works so well in your cabin situation. It's tried and good by viewers. They cost about $100. and I think can be view on Amazon. Or you can just type in instant use butane hot water heaters! I think you will like! Judie

I had a look and most are over 300$ but then there is the whole issue of winter and the cabin not heated any water in it would freeze and that would be the end of it.
