I finally got around to using my Potjie, cast-iron pot, to do some baked beans in the cabin on the wood-stove, carrying right along with the cast-iron cooking theme I also did a local favourite, fried dough, in a cast-iron skillet.

Homemade baked beans always bring back memories of my maternal grandmother she baked a large crock full every Friday night and they were always ready with homemade bread every Saturday lunch time. One Saturday back in the 60's I dropped in at lunch time and the Premier of the Province and a Senator were at her kitchen table having baked beans. They didn't impress her anymore than anyone else she fed them beans and bread.

Dear Dale. You know about so many things. You've taught me about so many things as I've watched your older tapes. How wonderful. Thank you for educating me on so mant different levels. Your tapes, while being educational and entertaining, are beautiful and often calming. I have a red greyhound that reminds me of angel. I love when she appears in your clips. I used to raise pidgins, homing and Powders. My mum called the powders ...pantaloons because they were so fancy. I love the angel tapes. I rescue former racing greyhounds. I've had 9. Only 1 left. Thank you for your wonderful tapes. You're wonderful!

Hi Dale! I just saw this video for the first time today and found it interesting as usual. Around 2001 there was a crow that lived somewhere near where i lived and itt had white wings.....white wings! I have never seen anything like that before or since! Ive had my suet feeder taken away as well and after replacing it caught the culprit of the suet snatching .....and it was a racoon...by caught i mean caught in my flashlight beam!

Dale, I was given a "cast iron pot" by a friend clearing out her house. Today I learned it is a potpie. Although I had previously prepared "omnivore" baked beans in a ditch oven, I'll now try your recipe for the vegetarian version. I really enjoyed your relaxed approach to the process and your inclusion of enjoying the wildlife around you. Very soothing! Thank you.

Thank you. It is basically any bread dough. Whenever we made bread or rolls some of the dough was saved to fry for breakfast or as a snack. Some people cook it in a deep fryer, that's how it is done in the restaurants but in my family it is always cooked in a cast iron skillet over medium heat in a bit of oil or shortening.

Hi Dale! enjoyed this vid. Like your bird feeder. If it was my hobbit bird feeder(lol) I would put in clear plastic all around the bird feeder with 2 inch circlular ports on each side. That is to keep other animals eating the seeds out., Have one side to move up or down to put in your seeds. Just saying. PS. It would help keep the snow of the seeds as well. Frank.

+Dale Calder, the Anasazi Bean, which is becoming more popular amongst vegetarian and legume loving diners, has been cultivated from samples discovered in old pots and burn pits in the ruins of Cliffside dwellings down in the desert Southwest in the United States. I suppose if the bean is kept dry and not exposed to moisture it can set dormant for decades if not centuries and still germinate.

Beans and Indian fry bread in foodie circles would be a comfort food menu. Here in the midwest its called eating 'Low on the Hog' for those so poor they can't afford meat. Low on the Hog can also mean parts not often seen at the butcher: tail, pigs feet, chitlens, head cheese. Also glad to see the Chickadee Check-off paid off in your area. Does anyone remember the chickadee check-off on their tax forms?

Thank you. If this bird table were just a bit larger it wouldn't be a problem with these small red squirrels and we don't have the large grey and black varieties. The table up at the house is a few inches wider in both directions and the squirrels climb the post but can't reach the edge of the table so they can't get up on the surface.

The Potjie pot is South African in origin. Here they say not to feed the birds in summer because of a virus that is spread at the feeders but we can still feed in winter. I started feeding again yesterday and already there are lots of birds at my feeders.

Dale, your table birds appear very nervous are you pestered by hawks ?...in England where I am ,they are a menace and have decimated our song birds and finches .The European sparrow hawk population has exploded over the last 10yrs ,and is protected .the result has been detrimental to our small bird population to a astonishing degree.

Yes there are hawks and after there has been an attack it takes several days for the birds to return in numbers. They are not that big of a problem here and as far as I can tell they seem to prefer the Mourning Doves, my favourite bird at the feeders but there is a large population of them.
