Nice truck ! We operate a ranch in SE Mt. we have four of those old beasts. One is a 98 w/auto trans, has a round bale bed on it & is rode hard and put away wet every day all winter. It may be one of the most mistreated trucks anywhere. About every three years it needs a transfer pump. I know you have gauges around, rig one up to check that pump occasionally. The truck eats a U joint or two, now and then and about every 5 years it needs a new track bar. You mentioned a "tuner" - not a bad idea but my advice -- for the .02 cents THATS worth, is to put a 4" exhaust on it -- Turbo to rear bumper !! Then make a decision about a "tuner".

Forgot to tell you the most important part,put a sump on you fuel tank,the plastic pickup dodge puts in the snaps off when it feels like ,will leave you stranded,and a fuel pressure gage is a must and tell the Mrs to shine them boots

First thing you do is put a lift pump on it ,or you'll be frying that vp-44. Had a truck just like it ,pulled extremely well, nothing sounds like a 24v !

Word of advice on a 24v Cummins ... install a fuel pressure gauge. The lift pump pressure is crucial to those 24v computerized injector pumps. If the pressure gets below 10lbs ... you need to change the filter and if that don't bring the pressure up you need to change the lift pump. Unlike a 12v the injector pump will fail with low fuel pressure and that's a $2k fix. Dodge should have a factory installed fuel pressure gauge but that's another story. Not sure how low the pressure needs to be for it to fail but I would keep it above 10lbs to be safe. Ask me how I know!
