Another wheel broke on my 2016 Subaru WRX....
This might just be the last set of cheap wheels I buy for my Subaru WRX, the Avid1 AV-20's are great, but they don't seem to last the trials of city driving.
When I buy the 2021 Subaru STI, I will test out some forged wheels!

Since I'm based in the NYC area, I've opted for 225/50/r17's to give me more protection against some of the developed world's most abusive roads. It allows me to drive with more confidence out here and helps give my Enkei TFR's a longer lifespan. 🤷‍♂️

Im running enkei raijin's on my wrx..no problems yet after 6 months. I personally don't even consider those wheels that are like $700 a set BC quality and the durability of them is going to be sub-par. Don't go for the cheapest set of wheels because you don't have the money. Save the money until you can afford decent wheels and tires don't cheap out on wheels and tires. One should expect to pay at least $1k for wheels+ whatever tires you choose. I did have no name brand tires on when i bought my wrx..the ride was hella-rough..upgraded to perelli pzero's..ride is a lot smoother an more comfortable. Cheap out on everything else if u must jus not wheel/tire

Well Avid's are cast and you get what you pay for. I'd probably go Enkei. They're rotary forged and don't break the bank.
@AutoEnthusiast
@AutoEnthusiast 2 жыл бұрын
Just to say it, Enkei's are cast too. Rotary forged is a cast wheel that uses high temps or cnc milling for the final stages of forming. Although yes they have a higher tensile strength, its marginal compared to the increase from forged wheels. Just fyi.
@26pak
@26pak 2 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEnthusiast I'm not sure how strong they are compared to forged wheels, but regardless they are much stronger than cast wheels since the molecular structure is actually changed and they are much less porous. They have the best strength to cost ratio out of the 3 types of wheels, and they are definitely strong enough for daily driving. That's why I suggested them since it seems like you mostly use the wrx for daily driving and doesn't seem like you want to spend forged wheels money. If money is not an issue, then by all means go for a forged wheel, but from what i'm seeing those are mostly only used for the track.

this is a non think. The tires are like what 30 aspect ratio? Potholes and sharp edges can easily crack a wheel like that. I have one changed just the other day, in the garage. You're expecting way too much from cast or even forged aluminum, holding up 3,000 lbs and it's momentum. It doesn't take much at all to bend or crack a wheel, even the best of them. You drive around Boston or at least, the NorthEast. I expect to damage 3 wheels per winter, at least, in Lower Michigan metro areas. This is normal and par for the course.

I’ve had my avid wheels for 3 years and just a week ago I recently upgraded to some 57dr gram lights and so far I can feel a big difference but overall I’ve never had issues due to reviews based on how fragile these wheels are known for cracks but honestly I’ve never had any issues with any cracks nor bend with my av20s and I’ve gone over some big potholes and messed up my alignment but rims were solid and I was running were Toyo proxies 255 35 18 and I’ve heard of sticking with atleast a 35 on the height and they said 30s are not recommended due to cracking issues

there are plenty of good wheels for less than $500ea. if you want $500ea wheels, than that's on you. I'm perfectly happy w/"$275-$400ea" as long as they have the right construction and are from a well known brand (Konig, Enkei, Fifteen52, Rotiform, etc.). I'd love to rock some Rays, Volks, BBS, or Advan, but since you aren't paying for my wheels, I'll just have to find a suitable substitute that fits my budget. I don't need extra show points.

I know this is old (in internet years), but the OE 17" wheels are cast wheels too. but I believe they are built in the Japanese JWL standard. do the Advan1 have this or possibly the (Euro) TUV standard? I would also think your 35 aspect ratio on a 255 tire is also a culprit. I believe a 265/35 tire will fair better and get more tire over the lip of the wheel (just speculating) while maintaining proper circumference.
@BoostedAP1

You probably hit a pothole or curb. Even a slight nick would cause a crack and spread without a driver noticing immediately. I had it happen to me, and it was on some cheap Konig wheels and thin wall(35) tire. I have had it happen to me with my Blitz 03s. The wheel is still destroyed, but it bends instead of cracking(cast vs. forged). From my experience, if I live in a state with a lot of rough roads and I travel a lot? Affordable wheels are okay with me. I would save the 5k wheels for a show car. I have some 18 Advans I havent put on cause I'm afraid to damage them. 😅
