My Wisteria has been planted for 5 years and I have enough video footage to show you how to prune it. Wisteria respond to pruning in March, mid summer and in late October. These 3 pruning are to prevent excessive growth and to prevent the plant from wrapping, twisting and becoming a tangled mess. In the video you can see a branched structure leading to flowering clusters.
Have a look at this video also on Wisteria cultivation

If your plant was grown from seed it will exhibit ‘seedling variability’ and will likely require many years of growth to grow small insignificant flowers. It’s not worth the wait. To be sure, buy your wisteria in flower with a named variety

I have battled wisteria for five years now. Acres and acres. Vicious vine is left unattended but the trees can breath now and it’s new vines coming up and I’m going to create a fenceline of Wisteria.

I appear to be in receipt of a stump of that black dragon purple one in the opening shot. infront of the kitchen window, tries to strangle the house and yet seems to follow like an algorithm, peculiar.

I have a question: 1)how would I prune back a hugely overgrown and out of control wisteria? It’s growing over a big arbor. There are twisted branches (more like tree trunks). 2)Do you have tips on how to prevent shoots growing back from thick branch/trunk vines I’ve cut off? A spray or paint? Constant trimming? I love the branch system you created. Thank you! 💜

Wisteria seeds are a great idea but in reality will only disappoint. Seedling Wisteria are highly variable and may take many years to flower and when they do it could be a big let down. Choose a growing Wisteria in flower (to be sure of color) and give it sun and water and stand back

I have planted 4 wisteria, beside the large 12” square cedar posts, to grow up and cover the pergola leading to the front door of my ranch home. I have listened to both videos on how to prune. What I most need to know is what to provide for the wisteria to grow up on. I don’t want them to wrap around the large rough sawn cedar posts, as they periodically have to be replaced. Will loosely tying the vertical shoots to a string tied at the top an attached at the bottom work. What kind of string, twine, rope, fishing line is best?
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 2 жыл бұрын
Use garden twine that will degrade. Loosely guide the growth where you want it. I frequently tie a shoot in place and a few months later relocate that tie as required.

Do you not understand why people hate wisteria there’s so many people that say don’t grow it don’t grow it it’ll take over words invasive, blah, blah blah I love wisteria if I could grow it everywhere I would but I can’t. I have an HOA and I have neighbors really close so I can’t grow it in my yard without inviting someone else’s but I love it.

Buy it in flower, 2 to 3 foot high. Your cold season might mean you can get stock in May. Buy the plant actively growing to see live shoots. Alameda my have some

@PlantedwithIanCooke

Wisteria is a vigorous vine and it will grow behind the shingles. I used screws on my wood shingles and then tied the growth to the screws . You need to check throughout the growing season and remove the intruding growth

What is the name of your wisteria? Is it hardy to usda zone 5?
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke Жыл бұрын
It was purchased as Wisteria ‘Black Dragon’ but it does not resemble the black dragon I am familiar with. Anyone buying a wisteria is advised to buy it in flower to be sure of the color. Baby it in the first year; plant in spring in full sun and do not let dry out. Tough and able to thrive in zone 5

Hello ! Thx for your wisteria videos . This will be my first time planting my Wisteria sinensis. My husband is sooooo dead set against it of course 😖because I want to plant near my house and it’s wood siding 🫣… anyway, I have done my research about the pruning 3 times yearly, my question is for training the vine what is best and easiest to attach to wood on house and how to prune to get it to flower ( hasn’t flowered yet) , what soil is best as well as mulch ? Any advice well appreciated!
@PlantedwithIanCooke
@PlantedwithIanCooke 2 ай бұрын
Do not plant straight Wisteria sinensis, this invasive, chokes trees and produces viable seed that continue the cycle. You must buy it in flower to be sure of the color. It must be a named cultivar as this ensure you get the spectacular flowers. The videos explain how to prune.
