Your description was that it wasn't getting spark in the first video. Which is common on these quads. Usually ends up being the voltage regulator or the relay in the fuse box. Tight valves are also very common on these because of the lack of lubrication to the intake valve, because of the angle of the engine.

Super common issue with them the other thing to watch for is the petcock the rubbers inside dry out and they leak gas into carb then direct into the base

Did it backfire at all?
@mbuczynski1234 жыл бұрын
I have a 300 and it idles super high. It also backfires when I turn it off. The issue is it is difficult to get it into reverse or out of reverse when it is like this. I think it is a safety issue. I turned down the throttle on the right side using the little turn nob but still the same thing. Hard to get it into and out of reverse. Any suggestions?
@mrmaxstorey4 жыл бұрын
Yeah they wont shift easily if they are idling too high. If you have already tried adjusting the idle knob, make sure you have a good air filter, make sure your throttle cable isnt bound up or too tight up at the handlebar, check valves, clean carb and check float height

WAIT A MINUTE>>>>>I just watched both of your videos...and you had come to the conclusion that the valve clearances were not within specs, right?? I reviewed the videos numerous times and not one mention about the compression release mechanism. why??...my question would be, if this is like my king quad, it has a mechanical compression release that disengages after pulling the rope. if you were able to pull this rope numerous times without manually engaging the compression release, then that tells me that the mechanism is malfunctioning, and that your valves weren't correct because of this. it would seem that adjusting valves was the solution, however, they were "out of spec" because the mechanism is constantly engaged....please enlighten me if I am way off base....
@mrmaxstorey5 жыл бұрын
No youre not way off base and its a good observation. Not sure on yours but on mine, you need to flip the decompression lever if you want it to activate, and then it holds open the exhaust valve for 1/2 rotatation of the motor, enough to get a little momentum up when you are pulling it by hand. Once the cams turn over 1 time it flips back the lever and the valves operate as normal. I had at one time thought the decompression lever was to blame, and I should have mentioned it in the video, however 2 observations allowed me to rule it out. First I was getting compression chuffs back into the carburetor, indicating to me that compression was leaking backwards up through the intake valve, and that one is not affected by the decomp lever. And 2 if the decomp lever was stuck open and permanently keeping the exhaust valve open, it would not gain any compression at all and it would have never fired even once. Finally once I properly set the valve clearance and the bike fired up and ran great, that was the best indication that I isolated and fixed the right problem.

Incidentally, some valves wear tighter and some looser, depending on the design. My motor rule is screw type valve adjustments when at all possible! I ain't buying no dam shims

Ok fast forward 4 years later I got the same quad had the same exact issue I thought to myself why would somebody over tighten this intake valve like this. I mean the valve jam nut was tightened down and as far as I could tell it was purposely set like that.. Yet the valve lash was like four or five complete turns over tightened it wasn't getting any compression because of it But it would start sometimes.. and then like you again the next day it wouldn't ... Bewildered I really didn't have any clue why I was doing ... It would start or it was hard to start wouldn't stay running I went fuel first then I went spark second and I almost came to the conclusion that it was the CDI because it would run for a little while and then it wouldn't start back up and I thought I checked the spark and it was non-existent but the next day I did have spark I confirmed it was still sparking when it wouldn't run so I went the compression route and I could hold my finger over the spark plug hole as I was turning it over and I'm like well that's that's not enough compression something going on so I look at the valves and I found what seems to be, exactly what you did... Now is this a coincidence or is there something going on that's tightening that valve?!? (By the way the exhaust valve was dead on) Because the guy I got it from swears he never touched it and I know he's not an idiot so I don't think he would have done it lol I'm really surprised it didn't bend the valve.. anywho it's a good bike plastics are getting kind of wore out cuz I'm in Phoenix and a couple carburetor issues... But the only thing even more bewildering about that Quad and seems all Suzuki quads is why in the world they don't have any brake lights!!!!!
@mrmaxstorey Жыл бұрын
Well Kenneth first ive never encountered a quad with brake lights, they werent meant for street use just trail use, so one illuminating light in the back is all you need to see your buddy at night, altho there are brake light kits I think to make it more streetable. Down in belize I rigged something up from an old scooter and we used my wife's recon on the street for years. But about the valve, we must remember that as the valve components wear the valves actually get tighter with age, not looser. Its very common that I have serviced a motor which has poor startup and compression loss, and it turns out the compression leaks out either the intake or exhaust valve during the roation because it opens too soon, from overtight valves. Loosening them up solves the issue. I dont know if suzukis are especially sensitive to this or not, but valve tuneups more often than not result in a looser valve

Its fairly embarrassing. I got the new motor in and took for a maiden voyage, there was some internal blockage I think because it shortly seized up. So its still in my shed. I have to get another motor for it but it will get fixed up eventually

Hello , I got one for you or your viewers .... how about one that runs good until it warms up a bit , then falls on its face , won't hardly go above idle , backfires a bit etc . Installed a manual flip starter switch last year , it ran great for months , then this started .... But when I flip the starter switch real quick it will smooth out and be fine for a minute or so , then goes back to almost limp mode falling on its back .... it's got me stumped big time !! Anybody ??? Thanks 😎

Is it possible the switch is shorting out to the frame?

@@mrmaxstorey Don't think so because what I did was install an interrupt start switch wired directly to the starter solenoid and switch is mounted on plastic body , I'm not good with electricity but I've done this before with atvs etc with no problem .... it's weird that when I blip the start switch it clears up for a min or 2 then it repeats going limp mode ... got me stumped for sure ... maybe it's the coil going bad ??

@@mrmaxstorey It's an early model King Quad 300 4x4 , I've been all thru it about 2 years ago , it has one wire that was never plugged in for as long as I remember , it's right next to the carb coming out of the harness on the frame on the right side but I've never been able to find where it goes .... when it falls off and loses power it acts like an ATV in reverse and won't go unless you press the reverse override button , but this is old school with hardly any fancy electronic over ride switches , like I said , she's got me stumped this time !! Thanks 😎

@@waylonmccrae3546 Well your description of the quad running as if it were in limp mode, plus the problem resolves when you flip your switch, it sounds to me like something is shorting out. If it were a multiple cylinder bike I would suggest you were losing ignition to a cylinder, but only being single cylinder, perhaps the alternator is cutting out and the bike is running off of battery power only, or you are shorting power to the CDI to the ground, or something like that.
