"Ornery, difficult to work with. If you're talkin' you're not workin". Words of truth and wisdom. Only productive people understand. One needs to work under contract where very specific goals are set. Such as labor costs and materials cost. If either of those is missed. One has to pay out of their own pocket. Few understand.

Love the video as always. I'm really looking forward to the Edison project, those axles will are a game changer. About 20 years ago I has a si.ilar idea with my 1995 Nissan D21 4x4 but those axles weren't available. My plan was a diesel powered generator and an electric motor on the input of the transfer case. Unfortuately the transfer case and axles would've all had to have been swappes to larger units to handle the torque and the electric motors were huge as well. Space was at a premium and so were prices for the pieces. I had made it to the point of designing a few brackets with a machinist buddy and the putting it all on hold while looking for smaller and more efficient units. We also wantes something that the average person could get replacement parts for. Unfortunately we never did get it even close as my buddy ended up moving and costs were just too high to justify it. Can't wait to see what you guys do, and I too think that GMC dually is the perfect truck to do it to.

1:22:32 to answer the question for anyone out there. I bought a power stroke with low miles. I spent all my money trying to update it and make it like a new truck. It broke down on me. Unfortunately I was not able to figure out the probems and had to take it to a shop with cost me money. I fixed taht truck, sold it to a buddy knowing Taht I had these issues, and bought a newer truck. My newer truck has had problems too, but they have been covered. If it has nuts and bolts and takes gas it will break.

Technology changes whether we like it or not. I think this is one of those “to each their own” type situations. Some people love evs and hate ice engine. Some love ice and hate evs. Some just treat it like a buffet and try a little of both. I understand everyone for choosing whatever position they have on it. If there was a 2024 handbook and we should all be doing and thinking the same thing, it would be a pretty boring world.

A beneficial project would be to build a small trailer with diesel/generator mounted to it that can be towed by your Tesla. Wire the gen to the batteries with a controller that starts the generator once the battery voltage drops. Convert Tesla and what ever else is total battery to Hybrid.......Call it a range extender since the vehicle can be charged at a charging station.

So you got me curious on why you can't flat/dolly tow an EV. Apparently the motors produce electricity when not providing power. So while technically they can be flat towed you have to find a way to dissipate that energy. I don't know enough about why they choose the motors to drive an EV over the style that's in a locomotive (they can be towed dead (no power) for as long as you want). I know a locomotive traction motor uses a variable electric field instead of permanent magnets and I'm pretty sure they also vary the frequency as well, but that's about the limit on what I know. Wish I did know more 'cause it's pretty cool how they work.

I agree with deleting the DEF system because it is a big waste of time and after doing research on some of my vehicles that I have worked on the nozzle for the DEF fluid is not even before the filter so it is not really cleaning the diesel exhaust filter correctly. A Mercedes OM605 tuned to a set RPM would be a killer generator diesel for a diesel-electric pickup. If it was me, I'd want to have a separate throttle (aircraft hand throttle?) for the diesel just to rev it up and have a bit more control - maybe tune it for 2 RPM ranges, max efficiency and max generator output.
@deezelfairy
@deezelfairy 4 ай бұрын
Or just let a computer keep the engine at the most efficient rpm for the given load (which changes constantly). Engines don't have a single rpm setting where they're the most efficient, it changes with the load. General rule with diesels is keeping them at 70-80% load for the given rpm. You don't want the engine buzzing away at 2K rpm when 1500rpm can match the load at that time.

Your comment about 1940s roads and a 1948 Fleetmaster inly being able to cryise 45-50mph..... Apparently it wasnt just 1940s roads, because my 1974 Jeep J10 only cruises 45-50mph before it gets wrapped out. Last time I tried to sustain 55mph I got it hot, blew a core plug out of the motor, and dumped all my coolant on the highway.

Regarding the F-350, weren't you going to do a disc brake conversion in the rear and something with air bag suspension in the front because of how much heavier the Cat Diesel engine is compared to the old Ford 460?
@dledsdleds432
@dledsdleds432 4 ай бұрын
So, Rich if you like constructive comments I'm to going to give (hopefully) one... Regarding the environment thing... Here overseas we had the problem back in the 80's that the forest died cause of acid rain caused from bad exhaust gasses. It was solved by forcing the catalytic converter into the market. If you watch videos from back then, all the people wanted the forest back, but no one wanted to give a dime. The industry claimed that it will be too expensive for the customer, that the engines won't last and use more fuel... At the end of the day we got the best longest lasting cars ever made. Electric engine control made that possible. Engines lasted 3-4 times longer and needed way less maintenance. So exactly the opposite of what was promised by all the conservatives who would prefer carburators, points and lash adjustment till today. Electric batteries nowadays can have a efficiency of way above 90% same for Motors and converters. So it is not a matter of trying to optimize it, it is just a matter of making it end user friendly whilst not harming the environment. This technology is exactly what mankind wants. And the user benefits are obvious... instant heating/cooling, way less noise, way less maintenance costs, no need to visit the fuel station and so on... On the other hand, an ideal combustion engine needs no exhaust gas cleaning in any way it puts out CO2 and h2o. So after 120 years of development we are still failing in that point. That fact gives a good indication why combustion engines are a dead end and it's probably better to end it sooner than later. Also (or just )for growing generations. The good thing is, young people who are growing up with electric cars normally prefer these over traditional ones. It's more or less like automatic to manual, if you're not a petrol head or an oldtimer, automatic is your choice. So maybe there is more good to come then you're thinking... And then last but not least. In general everybody gets what he/she asked for. I'm pointing on this, because nearly all German car brands build especially cheap made versions of their cars for the North American market. Plus, the really good ones in terms of long lasting (like the Audi A2 or the VW Eurovan TDI)are not even sold in North America, simply because no one wants to pay extra for quality... In case of your it all doesn't last anymore, my fridge was dead after only 2.5 years (you didn't say that exactly but told this before if I remember it correctly so I'm just guessing). Well, Liebherr makes also fridges but be prepared for the price tag... It's not percent more to other brands, it's times more... By the way I would like to say thanks for the great content you're providing over the last (nearly) decade. I like it especially because of the huge variety of projects and reviews. Also because you're not going to the extreme in your builds, like others. This, "no problem I'll make a CNC drawing and machine it on my 5 axis" thing. Having Andy on board is a nice refresher to!

Hey, what's going on with your boat. You've got that boat all wrapped up with some killer-looking graphics, and you've clearly got your LS engine all painted up and assembled, with the blue exhaust manifolds, ready to put into your boat. Where does this stand???

Like the EV opinion. The issue is even worse. EV are 3X heavier cresting 3X the road wear but don't pay road tax... yet. There is no current method to recycle the batteries which is a major environmental hazard. Always baffles me: engineers got us into this mess and people believe engineers will get us out. Huh?

Hi! About the politics(even tho we should keep politics out of the channels spectrum), in EU and sweden where i live the EU want to scrap all cars older than 30 years and not road legal. Thats a problem becase the old cars like volvo, mercedes and bmw, are nice cars when they run. the problem is that many of them are parked ether in a old mans garage(barn finds) or just parked outside providing good parts or atleast functional parts to get em going again. problem is time and money ofc. they dont understand diffrent coltures(car colture, machinery colture and sutch). the only problem old thing do is the oilleaks and rust? as far as i know oil leaks are leagel to a surten degree and ther is a diffrens to dump a pail of oil ofc. I am intrested in the ev convertions and thats how tech moves on. we cant stop time. i would rather see u make the ev than someone else. I would like u to do more revivals of machinery like excuvators and bulldozers and do technical work to it, but its ur channel. Also i like the mercedes alot, what happent to the white w124 with the om602? And aslo the om606? What if u EV swap a excuvator or tractor? batteries in the weight and a gen-set and having electric cylinders insted of hydralics? Electric and hyd are kinda simular? Lines with power and motors? i would miss the sound the hydrolics makes the engine sound tho. I have a kobelco 909K 1988 (25 metric tons) with a 6cyl mitubichi with sound fricking beutifuly and so easy to start. Ritch, why dont u have a big old excuvator or loader? its only worth scap money tho. I guess u have more important things and it take money and time. :) Also have heard that nissan leaf is a very good way to gen in to EV's cheep secoundhand batteries and sould be somewhat easy to refit. My consern with the cab build is that dont u need the charge the batteries regularly to keep em good? Also glad to see Andy of a part of the channel, a guy that has been with u for a long time. Good desition in my book. Thanks for the good educational and inspirering content. I should have asked this before the vid XD

Using the w126 example people seem to keep them immaculate and argue which factory to buy which part from, or try and cobble them together with random parts, and there is little in between with many falling into the latter poorly maintained and cobbled group. When not running well the v8s used on the platform are very dirty, and even when they are working they're not great. Lots of power and fun to drive though.

The increase in strict EPA standards seems a lot like what our governments do with gun control. Make it hard to build and own something using laws until you get rid of whatever your controlling. Profit and control. I don't comment often but things are getting scary for North America. BTW love your videos also what your doing with Edison Motors is really important for everyone. I really think it has a lot of applications, as you explained with powering homes during disasters. Plus keeping vehicles on the road longer seems to be a major goal with Edison Motors, It just makes sense. Thank you and I hope someone from the channel sees this comment and understands the importance of DG's role in the future of diesel electric auto.

naw yall out in southern Onterible get way to much salt, here in Winterpeg they don't even throw half the salt that they do out there. they mostly sand out here because the normal winter temp is -20. Our vehicles do rust away, they still do put salt on the road, but its not like when I watched the plows in Thundering bay keep the plow up and heap the salt on

I just got back from a mission trip in the Dominican and the thing that shocked me the most (besides the blatant disregard for any traffic laws) was the amount of plastic everywhere. Since their water (if they have any) isn’t good to drink, everything has to come in plastic bottles. And since they don’t have the infrastructure to collect, recycle, or dispose of all that plastic, it just goes on the side of the road. I know environmental issues is a huge talking point and a big issue for some, but until governments step in and assist in these countries, I think it’s nothing more than brownie points for whoever’s in charge.
