Luke and Jane have seen a whole bunch of Bioware's online shooter Anthem at E3 2018. The Destiny comparisons are clear, but here are several significant ways that Anthem sets itself apart from Bungie's sci-fi MMO, and indeed other RPGs. Enjoy!

The biggest problem I have with this is the reason we liked mass effect and Dragon age were because companions joined you, like on the actual missions. It felt more like you were hanging with friends. Here in this destiny clone of a game, they are replacing the NPCs that are fleshed out, different, and interesting with random strangers on the internet or people you group up with in real life. It's not the same. This game is not a bioware game no matter how much EA tries to market it as one

I'm not saying the Shapers are aliens, but...it's aliens.

To be fair, Dragon Age can be a human story about a Qunari, Elf or Dwarf too

The whole multiplayer missions and single player story reminds me allot of monster hunter worlds

I honestly am not very optimistic about this one but then again I don't have much hope in anything that has EA attached to it.

Being social and action are two things that majorly stress me out. I don't see myself ever doing the two in tandem and it being more enjoyable that anxiety inducing unfortunately. I'm just sad this game is taking away resources from one of few studios which was still producing games I like, to produce a game there are already many of. But I'm happy for those who will enjoy the nuances!

Ranger? Turian. Colossus? Krogan. Interceptor? Human. Storm? Asari. Anthem? ME3 multiplayer structured like Monster Hunter World. 100% on board.

I would love to know more about any type of healer or rogue character classes. They are normally my go to. Failing that - I can already see me firing up a colossus purely because of the size of the (big ass) guns it has.

the combo thing from ME was my absolute favorite thing. I can't wait to get my tag team champion partner back in a game that is completely surrounded by this and not just an objective and ten waves of enemies.

Jane I have to take a slight disagreement with you on the mass effect 1-3 story statement. After going back through games 1-3, and trying my best to keep my nostalgia glasses off, I couldn't help but notice how poorly some of those story telling segments have aged. It's not that the story is bad, but video game story telling has advanced quite a bit recently (god of war 3, life is strange, the wolf among us, ect.), and it's just no longer up to modern standards. I do agree that a great story should be a must for this game (which what I think you probably really meant), but Bioware should not look back too much, or at least look back with a critical eye. Which is something I would not be worried about, if it weren't for the fact that Mass Effect Andromeda seemed to suffer from precisely this issue.

My favorite airal combat to this day is still Zone of the Enders. If I enjoy this combat half as much as that I'll be happy.

Bioware made knights of the old republic (loved it) so they have some experience with mmo's but I will be watching and see how this turns up

So they are using the swtor system, the single area story mode and the multiplayer area mode that you could pty or play single.

So, are you thinking of "since the missions are going to be different everything more or less." is it essentially going to be like the Destiny weekly Night falls which have different Conditions each week?

The our world my story idea sounds so simple because it’s the exact same thing they done in Star Wars the old republic, everything was a shared world apart from areas sectioned off as story zones. I’d say it worked pretty well on that so it’s definitely promising from that perspective.

It sounds like their approach to story is similar to Star Wars: The Old Republic? Like, separate rooms only you can enter where all the actual story happens, and side-quests elsewhere. I was always mixed on that system though - I liked the writing for the most part but the gameplay didn't translate quite as well and the levelling up system meant that if you were free-to-play you had to do everything which lost momentum, so I'm curious how they'll pull all that off

This makes me skeptical..

How is playing with friends going to work? Are you just going to have to join and rejoin your friends every time they enter the single player to get a mission?

While I love your guys optimism, these types of games don't grab my attention much. I do like a gorgeous, mysterious world, and playing with others in a fantasy setting. Yet just this game has that feel that puts me off. Kind of like Destiny did (And it has nothing to do with developers and publishers like others mention).

I know it does not belong here but I miss Kippers. All of you get home safely and enjoy the experience.:)

Teamwork... In an MMORPG.... with random people...

The reason why so few games have the capacity to even "sort of" pull off "decisions with massive game-changing consequences" is because that would require the game developers to create an A.I capable of adapting the world and NPCs to a wide-plethora of permanent changes and realistic reactions depending on what the player might do, which is well beyond the scope of our technology at the moment. In a much more realistic scenario, it would require them to make several different full games, after what I suppose would have to be the same first 30-40 minutes for every player, since every game has to start somewhere, which would start and stop and branch-off and deviate slightly in this or that way, depending on how the player decides to proceed through the game. This has "sort of" already been done with the Souls games (especially the first Dark Souls and Bloodborne), where, depending on where you went first, or what you did or did not do, or who you talked to when, or who you killed or didn't kill, or what covenant you joined, and another whole wide variety of actions, it would all change the outcome of the playthrough you experienced on that specific run (with everything you didn't do or which would not be possible to do in one run alone, being possible in subsequent NG-pluses). We are still a long way off from having the technology to give an A.I a theme or a basic story and having it realistically and creatively generate a story and world for every single player uniquely. But it will be beautiful when it happens, I can't wait for that day.

Jane I like what you're in about and it seems like we share a lot about what we loved in Bioware games. If you meet with the developers and they tell you there are no romances, you be sure to tell them that you want romances.

Yeah ME:A game mechanic-wise like making and customizing anything from powers to how weapons work when you make it, like P.A.W. which is similar to the Particle Rifle from ME3, with a Bioconverter, which at the cost of 5% health, bottomless clip or to pick a setup for a situation have at it. However a *big* majority of the story....felt totally flat.

Maybe the combat will be handled similar to the Iron man games which for the most part had pretty solid combat.

Cautious Optimism is where I am currently at. But before E3 this year, I was at, "Uggg not another one of these no thanks", so it's a step up.

The story in this last mass effect wasnt from the team that brought us the first 3 mass effects or Dragon age.(those guys dont have jobs now😢) I really just hope EA can keep from destroying bio-wear until Dragon age 4 comes out

This flying and shooting you speak of is the LITERAL CORE of the 2008 Iron Man game- that I got into, but for some reason no one else liked supposedly on account of the controls. How's Anthem any different mechanics wise?

I do always groan a bit when I hear of yet another game where you have to play in a group. Not ideal for us socially anxious types who prefer solo play. Anthem has an oddly Guild Wars 2 feel to it with the combination of a single person story set in a MMO world and the mixture of magic and tech. It also seems to use the combined effects that they mentioned with certain attacks building on others to give more effects. I do like the physics of the game and the Javelins seem to have us much mass as you'd expect from a dirty great suit of powered armour, especially the Colussus. The big question for me though is, is there a story with a beginning, middle and end and can I get there myself if I can't work up the courage to speak to other people (a scary prospect at the best of times)?

Am super excited for Anthem. On a interesting note the co-op or single player option that EA and Bioware talk about sounds exactly like Borderlands. Please tell me am not the only Borderlands fan who saw this

I'm always filled with a sense of dread when I hear Jane chanting "Where's the Heart?" & have had to train myself not to volunteer information to its​ location...I've had apples from that particular cart before...

So far of all the games presented at E3 (besides elder scroll VI) Anthem might be the only one I buy and will most likely enjoy.

I'm really looking forward to this! Whats more, I wouldn't mind if it's like Destiny as I really enjoyed Destiny and Destiny 2.

I wish they would take inspiration from SWTOR (Bioware's Star Wars MMO) and allow us to bring an NPC companion on online missions. It would help those of us who prefer to solo.

Andromedas story may not match Mass Effect 1 to 3, but did it at least match Mass Effect 1?

Well, nice to know I won't need to worry about this title. Definitely not for me. The idea of the game-world being co-operative but the base town being strictly single-player feels like a really weird inversion of most online games, in which the hub area is the place to meet up and socialise with other players. I guess they can make it work, but it just sounds bizarre.

It's a bit disconcerting that Luke had to think where his heart is... And shame, Jane! have you forgotten how to do biotic and elemental combos way back in ME? ME3 MP Paladins were a great combo class and who can forget Ms. Bubbles, the Asari Stasis Exploder?

So far I've had very little interest beyond "get on with it so I can have DA4" but I must admit the sci-fi/high fantasy mix has caught my eye. I'm with you Luke - fingers crossed for literal Sauron!

Funny how when a certain game comes out, it's automatically called a clone because another game before is similar. Guess what, almost everything has been done before to begin with, and next up, a clone refers to something almost strinkingly similar, clones have the exact "DNA" as the thing they were based on, as soon it has at least three or four different featurews, it ceases to be a clone and is simply a different game which was based on the elements from another game.
