From a NY Times article quoting a behavioral psychologist on beards: "...both sexes judge men with beards as older and more masculine, and describe them as generous, sincere, industrious and self-confident." It's probably that "sincere and generous" part that plays into not expecting such a joke from Anthony Jeselnik.

So that's probably why you view him more harsh. You pretty much confirmed it yourself. You view him differently with a beard. "Interestingly, they found that participants were quicker to classify the angry bearded photos than other types of photos, suggesting that beards enhance visual cues associated with anger recognition. Everything about his standup is super alien!!! He has carved out an amazing and unique niche. NOBODY writes jokes or delivers them like he does. I would say his joke writing is some of the best and most clever in comedy history!!! He will go down as one of the greatest to ever do it.....

I first saw Jeselnik live about 3 or 4 years ago when he was touring with Amy Schumer, Nikki Glaser, and Aziz Ansari (awesome show!). I think most of us had never heard of him, so we were unprepared. He opened with his joke about finding out a bunch of sex offenders lived in his area . . . About half the audience were in shock when he hit us with the punchline, while the other half laughed like hell. :-)
