I had no idea this fight took place, but to both fighters credit, it was a great fight, and they both use dirty tactics. When Wepner had him on the ropes swinging away, the refs should not have interrupted the fight, but be it as it may it was a absolutely great fight.!

I wonder what the rules are for this mixed contest. They always had strange limitations. Apparently, ground fighting was extremely limited as Inoki was prevented from applying several submissions. Wepner was tough as old boots. Credit to both men for going for it.

There was so many times in this fight, where inoki could have submitted wepner in this fight, but one thing for sure is that inoki definitely didn't have any chance of knocking him out because he was able to absorb punches well against Ali for his heavyweight title. There were also so many times, where wepner could have knocked inoki out because of all of those body blows that inoki took, and the fact that wepner was able to stagger him with one of his punches. Although inoki was able to answer wepner when he got put up against the ropes by taking him down several times, which is a good strategy against a boxer.

You are correct. I heard this was a work from the man who trained Inoki and now that I've seen it, I'm certain. Inoki was a terrible shooter. Wepner was supposed to go down on the first "boston crab". They had to redo the finish. A good wrestler would have had no problem with Wepner. And Wepner could have knocked out Inoki any time he wanted. Just the fact that they used the crab finish (a pro wrestling gimic) should make it obvious.

@@5star_BigChief631 but what you observed is exactly why it looks like a work to me…that stomp on the ground amongst other things Inoki did would be an automatic DQ in a legitimate athletic contest. Chuck Wepner dug shits to inoki’s body but rarely threw clean power punches to the head when he could have easily done so. Inoki was like the Hulk Hogan of the Japanese pro wrestling scene. And always had Worked fights throughout his career. The Ali fight was suppose to be a work but Inoki decided to (shoot) make it real-which is why he spent all his time on his back kicking Ali’s legs so that Ali couldn’t punch him and knock him out. It made for a terrible fight. in this fight Inoki didn’t fight that way at all and there were a few times u can see Inoki trying to sell the punches to the head to the crowd.

The fight Inoki did with Ali was an undignified thing. Ali refused to fix it and Inoki lied on the Canvas and hurted Alis legs quite serious by kicking them all the time. Compared to that this is quite fair, but still bizarre enough by the way.🥴

This fight looks more satisfying to watch. Unlike the Muhammad Ali vs Antonio Inoki fight in which Inoki stayed glued to the canvas for the entire match thus giving little chance to Ali to throw jabs at Inoki. The Ali vs Inoki match, in comparison, was a complete farce.

The referee helped Wepner up several times. Never saw him do that for Inoki.

"Okay, guys! Great idea for this mixed rules fight! We'll show boxing for all it is by allowing every and all strikes! And we'll show all the possiblies of wrestling by only allowing grappling for a few seconds and not allowing any submissions!" "You're a genius, Phil."
