"If you squib a machine gun, that's a problem" Probably the most understated sentence I have ever heard.

actually, it would be if you 'frag the guts of a french machine gun firing french ammo, which shouldn't function in the first place, you're doomed, don't add additional points of failure.'
@AreYouFinnished
@AreYouFinnished 3 жыл бұрын
I don't quite understand. I know what a squib is, and generally what causes it, but why is this any more dangerous in a machine gun than any other weapon? Shouldn't the underpowered cartridge fail to cycle the action, regardless of action?
@kelon32
@kelon32 3 жыл бұрын
Even if it fails to cycle the usual first step remedy is to run the action and try again.

@@AreYouFinnished A squib is an underpowered round that gets lodged in the barrel when fired. The next round fired after the squib tends to blow up the barrel. With a machine gun, several rounds follow up the squib in rapid sucession resulting in a much more spectacular explosion.

Mark, after listening to your narrative about the mechanics of that rifle, I'm reminded of a saying that George Patton claims to have coined, "Pressure makes diamonds". During the development of that rifle, the French Army was worn out and demoralized., Paris was on the brink of being overrun by the Germans and the US was wishy washy about joining the war. I strongly feel there was an all out effort on the part of the French to develop a "game changing" weapon to win. Thus the devoted effort to quickly develop a repeating full size battle rifle, as well as other implements of war. Really enjoy these videos, thanks for posting them, I'm familiar enough with the work to know the effort it takes to video this stuff. Thanks Again .

Rewatching some of these videos really makes me think that designers and engineers in the current firearms manufacturing world would greatly benefit from doing their best to be historians of the art to a similar level they are practitioners. Our current reliance on computer-aided equipment seems to have dampened our collective genius. I think the closest we've had to that in recent years was the Hudson company. Mind you, the business and procurement side of their company absolutely tanked them, but they were very open in their use of historical inspiration to create a rather novel design that had significant potential

A C So the energy has to go somewhere. Instead of the primer soaking up the energy from the firing pin, the firing pin comes to a complete stop absorbing all of the energy.
@marknovak8255

The pin is able to stretch down the long axis until it eventually "taffy pulls", and breaks. Pull on a piece of bubble gum far enough and it will eventually separate.

I'm so far from an expert I can se the curvature of the universe between here and there. That said...as I understand it, when the firing pin stops suddenly, the tip is unsupported and can break off from the sudden deceleration unless it has something to press against and support it in the attached position, like a cartridge base.

Always love watching craftsmen work. I have a question. I have a berthier carbine and for some reason the tamper resistant bolts through the stock were missing and filled with putty badly. I replaced them with 4mm bolts. Is there a specific function I should worry about other than to be snug to help transfer recoil and hold the wood grain together? Or is there something very bad about fooling with these. Everytime I see you work I notice you don't fool with these crossbolts and there must be a good reason :) Keep up the good work!
@marknovak8255
@marknovak8255 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the crossbolts do not need to be removed in the normal course of operation. The French military took a dim view of non armorer personnel disassembling anything, and required special tools to enforce that. You need a lathe friend to make the spanner nuts, they came in many different varieties, but the bolts need to be in place to recoil load the weapon. Just sayin......
@someguy2741
@someguy2741 4 жыл бұрын
@@marknovak8255 I have no idea why this guy removed them. And then why not put them back. The hardware store bolts will work until I find proper ones :) It doesnt look like it was fired without them since so thats good. I bet it would be a great way to make toothpicks in a hurry. It doesn't help that its greek contract that never received Ball N conversion... so it would have been a super crappy day if they shot milsurp Ball N. I am itching to try this thing out and got some of the new PPU ammo and can reload. Any huge alarm bells about shooting this thing? I will check the headspace by shimming the back of the casing... is there a max tolerance I should really be concerned with or am I overthinking this bolt action rimmed cased boom stick? Greetings from Poland. I've noticed that owners of gas-operated rifles often handload their ammo so that the powder charge is just enough to smoothly cycle the action. Does this actually decrease the wear and tear on the rifle or is it this done purely to make it easier and more comfortable to shoot? Also, why did you decide to go with the 231 gr Balle N instead of the 198 gr Balle D (which is available new from PPU) in your handloads? Was that specified by the owner?

@marknovak8255
@marknovak8255 3 жыл бұрын
The energy contained in the pin must be absorbed by something elastic. Once a primer is struck once, it is no longer able to do that. A snap cap has a spring or rubber insert for this function. Drop firing pins or hammers on snap caps only, is my opinion.
@alanincardona1879

What I do is punch out the spent primer. Then fill the primer pocket with RTV silicone. That way the energy of dry firing is absorbed with a soft material. I use this on my shotgun. My shotguns get used a lot.

Please forgive my ignorance, but as a complete imbecile with no training or experience in gunsmithing whatsoever, I understand that you have your reasons, but I can't help but wonder why is brazing preferable to threading the firing pin rod and the pin itself then just screwing the new pin assembly together with loctite?
@marknovak8255
@marknovak8255 4 жыл бұрын
Threading something that hard, AND that small will result in a broken tap. At that point a new firing pin must be fabricated, but the job now has 500 dollars worth of labor in it, and you get paid 100. I prefer to cut to the chase and stay in business. No sarcasm intended in this answer, at all. Most of the decisions on how to proceed with a job are tempered against staying in business, first.......Which is why my advise to beginning smiths is to take a business class, up front.

First of all, mr.Novak, could You speak a little bit slower, because Your video watch not only english speakers. I not always understand reasons You choose way to repair . For example, You decided just to replace the heading of firing pin instead fabricate the new one whole pin. And even You did not lock it with threading connection but connected it just with soldering. I guess the firing pin is very stressed part of rifle, and in use will be broken soon again just because the repaired pin was not tempered. If You wanted to keep that rifle authentic for collecting there was not necessety to repair the pin, just clean up would be enough. But if this rifle will be used for firing all it parts should be fully serviceable... Usually Your repair has a goal to get fully working firearm. But this repair seemed was some strange and senceless for me... Anyway, thank You for Your videos, the are very interesting. Greetings from Ukraine!
