I am definitely not a mechanic. Combine lack of experience, a desire for perfection, and a bad shoulder and I am able to turn a simple 30 minute project into a four (4) hour ordeal. When I performed my install, I had a hand ratchet, a torque wrench, metal file, and my 4Runner was on the ground. Things I would change about my install: * I have floor jacks. I don't know why I didn't use them. You can do a floor install, but it would have been much easier with the extra space - in my opinion. * I need to buy an impact drill. I had trouble inserting the bolts into the frame. I tried to hand tighten them. They would go in a little way and I was no longer able to tighten them. In the video, Jillian performed it was little effort. I was afraid I was cross threading them. I don't know how much time I spent inserting bolts, eyeballing them, worrying about them being cross threaded, removing them, then starting again (remember - I am an inexperienced perfectionist). I believe this problem was due to my lack of experience, having a small work space, and using hand tools. I called Jillian from Apex after the fact. She told me it shouldn't have been that difficult. Again - I chalk this problem to operator error (me). * I tried hand filing the "boogered up" welds with a hand metal file. I think the only thing I did was polish the weld, smooth my metal file, and make my shoulders & arms sore. Though it's not a best-practice, I said to myself, "Self - heck with it, just put the recovery points on." I primed and painted the newly polished portion of my frame and installed the recovery points even with the "boogered up" welds. If I had it to do over, I would've found a friend with a grinder or seen if I could rent one from Home Depot. Things that went well: * The video is awesome. The video breaks all the steps down and easily understood. I watch a lot of DIY KZfaq videos. I was all of them were this good. * Removing air dam, OEM skid plate, and sway bar went well. Removing the bolts was tougher than expected. Thing I will repeat: Buying items for my 4Runner from Apex Overland. I called them months ago about an issue. They were extremely helpful. When I spoke with Jillian recently, she was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. Apex's prices are great. Their customer service is greater. Final Comments: If you have average mechanical ability and proper tools, I think you can correctly do this install relatively quickly. If you're below average and don't have the right tools (like me), it will take longer - but it's definitely doable. I'm glad I used Apex Overland and I'm glad I did the install myself.

I just finished installing these (and a TRD skid plate). Watching this video a couple of times before starting helped a lot. I took my time, and used a jack to help hold the sway bar in place while installing the new bolts. The only minor issue I ran into was, as others have mentioned, having the lock washers spread when torquing the 19mm bolts down to the recommended spec. Over all, it was fairly easy thanks to this video.

I did the install today, took me about 40-45 mins by myself on the ground. The toughest part for me was putting my TRD skid plate back on lol. Thank you for the video.

Man I wish this video had come out sooner. I bought mine about the time these were released. Couldn't get it to fit. Stumbled upon this video a couple weeks ago and learned that you had to grind some welds down. Oh boy. They're finally on now. 😅

Great product, great installation video. My experience in reinstalling sway-bar mounts: everything snugged-up fine, however; the passenger-side, rear mounting-bolt stripped, while torquing. My dealer’s mechanic advised that the sway-bar ought to be supported when reinstalling bolts so the bolt holes align. The OEM bolts have a shoulder under the head which helps the alignment of bolts into frame. Letting one side of the sway-bar hang while installing new hardware on the opposite side, may have contributed to the issue.

Excellent video, thank you. Like another commenter, I did find the bolts a bit difficult to insert by hand - I screwed them in with a ratchet initially just to be sure my torque wasn’t trying to cross thread them. My only issue When I torqued to the specs they stated, my locking washers started disfiguring and spreading out beyond the head of the nut. I stopped tying to get to their torque specs - happened on the 19mm and the 17mm bolt. It’s like the lock washers are too soft for that torque spec

@ApexOverland
@ApexOverland 2 жыл бұрын
No need for blue loctite, the lock washers we have found do the job! As far as antisieze, would be a good idea if you live in a high corrosion climate.

Very cool - I see you have KDSS versions available now but those instructions say to remove the front bumper and crash bar? Why can't I just go from underneath the same as you did here? I have a 2022 TRD ORP. Thx - Thomas
@titanslug
@titanslug Жыл бұрын
The reason you need to remove the bumper and crash bar is because it’s the best way of feeding the bracket with welded nuts through the frame. KDSS-equipped 4Runners have the two holes where the normal front swaybar would attach, but they are not threaded.

@@bclarymd I found the drilling to be straight forward. On my 4Runner, the holes where the non-KDSS swaybar would mount were there, but one hole on each side was covered by a metal tab inside the frame. You just need to drill through the tab so that you can feed the bolt through to the bracket with welded nuts. Before installing the recovery points, I sprayed the holes I drilled with POR-15 to keep the bare metal from rusting. Hope this helps!
