**This video is for demonstration purposes only. Apex CDL Institute makes no claim that the techniques, nomenclature or methodology of shifting a non synchronized transmission will work in your specific truck. All trucks and transmissions are different.**
Any further education or clarification is reserved for students of Apex CDL Institute.
Jeff from Apex CDL Institute describes how to shift a non synchronized manual 10 speed transmission in a semi tractor. The same shifting techniques can be applied to all large commercial motor vehicle transmissions although the shift patterns and splits will vary depending on the amount of gears and manufacturer.

I'm currently in trucking school. This man is my hero and his videos are saving my butt. He's concise and clear in his explanations, and he's better at helping me understand than my onsite instructors. If I had found these videos before I committed I would have gone to this school instead. Thank you, Jeff...you're awesome.

WOW! Thanks Jeff I've got 45 minutes of experience behind the wheel. I was so frustrated trying to learn how to shift the 10spd at the training center. As an 'expert' car and motorcycle driver/shifter with 30+ yrs experience I figured a truck would be easy. TOTALLY different methods of shifting....totally frustrated me. NOW I understand why and how a truck trans is different. This really helps my brain understand HOW it is different, and I now 'get it'! Looking forward to my first real lesson..

Jeff is the real deal. One of those natural born instructors. I've worked in aviation for several decades for a major airline and this is the kind of professional I've worked with in the classroom, the Level D full motion flight simulator and at 37,000 feet. If I retire and get into trucking I'd be honored to have Jeff as my instructor.

Currently I am taking driving lessons, previously I didn't know much about the reasons for grinding while shifting gears, I simply used to do the double clutching, now I got the ideas and also the reasons why did it happen . Thank you so much.

It's all about timing,just because you press the clutch in a truck does not mean you get an upshift or down shift if the timing is off.This is why when you have mastered timing you can just float the gears all day and save your left knee. Great video for those beginners who want to get into trucking.I would also advise though who hate manual transmissions to learn it anyway.You never know when you'll need to drive a truck with a manual.

I'm currently In driving school and it seems like I'm having a hard time with my instructor. I feel like I'm not comprehending enough especially with learning downshifting. But thank you so much for making this video with an easy smooth tone to understand. I'm so used to an angry voice ha but again thanks man! Can't wait to apply this in school today.

My pleasure. Yes, downshifting is one of the harder techniques to learn while shifting because it involves revving the engine up between clutch pushes....so the feeling is a little un-natural. Good luck and remember, you are driving the truck....do not let anyone get you upset or stressed out. Slow down and think about what you need to do. Keep your chin up and stay at it!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to make it this video. You showed me a bunch of stuff that I knew nothing about. My school for a class b didn't even attempt to show us how to operate a 10 spd and I was there for three weeks. They had us take the test in a automatic so I got my CDL class b but I didn't know how to drive a actual truck, which is ridiculous and a little scary when you think about all the people who have the license which lets them drive these big trucks when really they have no business behind the wheel. Luckily I drove with someone else for a while at my job and got to practice a lot. The couple guys I drove with couldn't really explain how to drive a truck so this video was great for me. Thanks again this video is a big help.

This video demonstrates effective skills in teaching a subject. I am a doctoral student and enrolled in a truck driving class to shore up additional labor skills. My instructor has over 30 years of driving. But, I have struggled because the instructor uses the trial by error teaching technique. I don't care for this technique with 80,000 lbs behind me. I appreciate the video for placing everything in context. This video should be a common teaching module at school truck driving classes

I learned more from your video than I have 3 days in the skills yard. I may have to give you a guys a call. It would be worth my time and drive to head out that way and learn how to drive a truck effectively and safely.... not just pass a test. Great video!

Unfortunately most schools hire truck drivers that have no teaching ability. They can drive a truck like its nobodies business but being able to do it, does not always translate to teaching it. One of the best instructors I have ever worked with was a 21 year old young man that had grown up around trucks his whole life but had never driven out on the road. He just had a natural, calm way of getting through to people what they needed to understand. If there is anything we can do to help, just let us know. Best of luck to you....drive safe.

Yup...that helped. I'm taking a road test for a job tomorrow morning. I have very limited experience and it's been over 10 years since I've driven a 10spd big rig. No problems with my pre-trip inspection and basic driving abilities, but I was concerned about my shifting. Your in-depth explanation and technique demonstration has me feeling much more confident. I think I've got the technique and the rythm down. Sitting here practicing...lol. For upshifting, "Clutch to neutral, clutch to shift"...simple. For downshifting, "Clutch to neutral, clutch out and a quick vroom, clutch to shift."...reasonably simple. The tip with the simple mph math and gear selection is great. Thanks Jeff!!!

Thanks for these videos! I'm getting close to going into school, and I've been reading and studying so much beforehand. This was one I was worried about because I've never even sat in a semi before, let alone drive one. I want to learn as much as possible before school, as well as in school because the schools aren't that long. This and your pre-trip inspection video, (which I listen to while going to sleep every night as well, hoping that the theory about how things are retained when you do that, is actually true), are my top 2.

Great instructive videos! Both the 10 speed and the pre-trip. Nope don't ever break the tangs off the clutch brake. Bother to repair and can require the transmission to be disconnected and pulled. And if you're ever buying an older tractor, clutch brake should be something to check off the list.

While it would become second nature after getting used to it, I can see how auto-shift is becoming more popular. Of course truckers should still learn how to operate a manual properly. Trucking should be about safety first both for the career of the driver and the live of others. Manual is kind of a contradictory system when it comes to safety. No matter how good someone is at shifting, that is still a fraction of a second that can be used to check the mirrors. Not to mention truckers are expected to drive long hours, and shifting all day is going to exhaust the driver depending on the route. I also know a trucker who retired with a completely messed up left knee thanks to the clutch, and I am sure he wasn't the only one with that issue.

+Chris Y Chris, good question. The answer is stop your truck. If you have an an emergency braking scenario which requires you to get on the breaks hard to avoid a crash, don't worry about downshifting. Apply the clutch and use the amount of braking pressure required to get the truck stopped ASAP. Downshifting is the least of your worries then.
@chieftp
@chieftp 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Y put it in neutral and lock it down. when you start back up, just slip it into whatever gear is appropriate for the speed you're going. I would also recommend avoiding any school which refers to a tractor trailer as a "semi truck," or an accelerator pedal in a diesel vehicle as a "gas pedal." but if you're thinking about getting into trucking, shifting gears will be the least of your worries. also, most large fleets are now using autoshifts anyway. by the way, if you think you'll start out making $1,000 a week or start out with a local job, you're living in fantasy land. but the trucking schools have to make the sale I guess.

Apex CDL Institute I'd love to see a paycheck. that would be very nostalgic. every company I've worked for in the last 10 years has done direct deposit with no option of receiving a physical check. it's actually great that you introduce trucking students to heaping loads of BS. that's great preparation for all the future BS they'll encounter in the trucking industry. it'll actually come in more useful than all the book work, backing practice and using the gas pedal on the semi truck. LOL. by the way, I won't be in Kansas shitty any time soon. after 10+ year of driving I actually have a local job where I'm home almost every night. I wouldn't go back OTR even if it paid as much as the lies in the newspaper ads. happy new year!

How about just not downshifting? Neutral, slow down to required speed, shift into whatever gear needed if not coming to a complete stop before getting going again, works for me.
@Apexcdl

+mason salt Because that is dangerous. Coasting is very unsafe. When you are coasting you dont have a way to apply power if you needed. When you are coasting, the trailer is driving the truck, not the truck driving the trailer.

+mason salt using the engine to slow down prevents the brakes from heating up causing brake fade and eventually failure. I'm not sure where your from but if you did that in B.C. you'll fail your road test. or if you went for a test drive for a company they would not hire you.
