I invited a few App Academy graduates on to talk about the coding bootcamp. We dove into what their experience was like and if it provided the education and support needed to become professional developers. We dove into some really interesting tangents that I absolutely loved. For example, are some coding bootcamps predatory? If so, what does that look like?

I took a course in programming who tought me both C# and Phyton. I had a harder time with Python because it was not defined. My teacher told me that most people tought the other way around. In Sweden we have a middleground between a computer science degree and a bootcamp that a lot of people take as a fast track. Going to colleage in Sweden is free. You can take a loan with low interest if you need to cover living expences and stuff but the tuition is free so most people get a degree of some kind.

Thank you for this. I stumbled upon this and I am starting on Nov 16, 2020! Very excited. The interview process was definitely way better than Lambda School, Springboard, and Coding Dojo. So far I am very impressed with the way they conducted the whole interview process. I loved the interview panel you did. Very very insightful! You should also put in your video title "2020 a/A coding bootcamp...or something 2020? What do you think about that?

I'm currently learning Java on my own, and doing a lot of research on what boot camp would fit me personally, since I currently live in AZ. I'm leaning heavily into App Academy, because of the six month curriculum structure. Nicolas brought up some interesting points, as I was looking into using their ISA program as well. Seems a bit scary, but I'm really driven to make this my career. While learning Java through a Udemy masterclass, I find my singular issue is not understanding what exact step to take to get my required output(I grasp the concepts, but I blank on the how from time to time). I'm currently only in my second week of studying it, but is that something that will come with time? Or is that something that will be a challenge for me personally as a developer in general? I really appreciate any advice you have, Don.

In Chicago, I can say for certain that you're more marketable with other languages that aren't Ruby. You have to look at your local area. Check out job postings on job sites like indeed and look at their requirements. I'd even recommend you create a spreadsheet and tally up different language requirements in the areas in which you'd accept a job.

I'm starting Nov. 30th. Taking the 24 week online. Quick question..I know it's an over asked question, but I think you could answer it best specifically for a/A. Mac or PC? (P.s. I know Windows and OSX both equally well..but currently have a PC for budget reasons. I could stretch it and get a mac if the reward outweighs the cost. What's your take?)

For App Academy? I have no idea. You should contact an advisor for that. What I can tell you is that I made it through most of Fullstack Academy with a Chromebook. Almost everything is available in the cloud now, including servers and code editors.

I got a new mac desktop for app academy when I attended. (2019) Turned out a ton of my batch mates used linux and had no issues. TL;DR you don't need a mac. It won't help you enough to justify the price. But if you want one, get one.

@@GentleUwU thank you so much for the advice. I come from an audio engineering background..so I've worked on fully loaded mac desktops, macbook pro's, etc. because it was pretty much industry standard. Definitely will always choose mac over pc if the choice is available. Money is just an issue atm. I was more asking because am completely unsure of how performance intensive coding is? Coming from audio I have ran into so many projects where we are maxing out 16gigs of ram and clipping processing power on 8core i7's during large sessions. I've gathered since posting my first comment that coding isn't quite that hardware demanding and I should be able to get through bootcamp with what I have hopefully. I was just anxious and not wanting to find myself in situations during bootcamp where my laptop can't handle an assignment/project 😩 lol. I will definitely be upgrading to a macbook when Im comfortably able to again though.

Nice video! I'm an alumni myself and I think one of the reasons why they choose graduates is because why not? They know the curriculum, they don't need to hire a software engineer with work experience who knows nothing about the curriculum and teach him, who then has to teach us. Just doesn't make sense as that software engineer can also leave and the cycle repeats. My cohort was remote due to the circumstances this year and I can say the instructors did an amazing job, answered all our questions, and mentored us and when it was time to cut off the training wheels they did just that and we had to figure out our projects on our own and consult each other and google for help. There's no need to hire outside software engineers to come teach the students, just doesn't make sense.

I’ve been fortunate enough to meet many coding boot camp instructors over the past few years. I’ve noticed a huge difference in quality of instructors that had real world experience vs not. It’s very easy to convince someone to forget about their original goal of actually being a software engineer when you’ve nurtured and molded them into feeling like they were meant to put that on hold and teach at the coding boot camp instead. I’ve talked to a few people that have expressed their regret in doing that. All of them had some sort of confidence issues about becoming a developer, which motivated them to just take an instructor or even fellowship position for the time being. If you can convince someone to come back and teach, when their main goal was to become a software engineer, and pay them less than what they could be making, that’s predatory. Coding boot camps are businesses and many of these offers extended to graduates aren’t always as wholesome and as rewarding as they appear. From a business perspective, I agree with you. It’s genius.
@iSWATxJOKERi
@iSWATxJOKERi 3 жыл бұрын
@@DonTheDeveloper Right, I agree in terms of bootcamps in general but I was specifically talking about App Academy. From my experience with the instructors I had, their passion for teaching us, helping us and etc. they want to be there. Yeah it's rigorous for them too but I didn't get the sense not once that it felt like it was something they had to do, more like they wanted to do it. I just graduated in October and there were instructors teaching me that had just graduated a couple months before me and they are definitely capable of getting a job no problem.
