That was very special. When my momma passed, she and my dad has been married for 43 years. She was buried about 4 miles from the house and many times we’d get up and find him gone. His car would be there but he was no where to be found. He had walked four miles down a major U.S. highway just to sit at her grave. It is just a wonder that he was not killed by a big truck. He never forgot her. He loved her till the day He died 26 years later. We buried him beside her. Thank you for that story.

Maybe he was wishing that somehow he would be there in the grave too but cared too much for those around him to take the quick way while never revealing the true depth of feeling for his and your loss. Sounds like a man who was very strong and very hurting - may they both be at rest now.

One of the most beautiful ghost stories I've ever heard Donnie. People forget that not all ghost etories are about horror; (Although the Civil War was the horrific catalyst here.) If I get up that way I'll be sure ro look for that light! That kind of love surpasses all!

Donnie I think love so deep leaves a track on time just like a footprint. Perhaps this light was the footprint of perfected love. Love never dies. Something strong as that is very well able to leave a light on earth. In a footprint of the one who loved with a perfected love.

Interesting little story, Donnie--Thank you! My family began in Appalachia over 170+ yrs ago, so I find the history & tales always intriguing. I remember my Grandfather gave me coins from the civil war era and someone stole them many yrs ago--I know we aren't suppose to put our value in "things," but back then, it broke my heart...

Great story Mr. Donny... it reminded me of what happened after my grandma died unexpectedly. Story goes that the mail man saw her at the mail box a week after she passed. But he wasn't aware of this because he was on vacation the week she passed and only learn of her passing when he stopped to talk to my grandpa.

Sad, sad story Donnie. Those people really had it hard and it's a wonder they lived as long as they did. We had a place out 60 miles east of Cincinnati, all woods and lots of old old shacks like that. Mostly nice people but I loved going there. Old gravel roads, and definitely scary at night!!!

This brought a tear to my eyes. The thought of that old man standing by a grave in the dark of night to keep his beloved company and to give her a light in the night. Then to continue it on even after death. I want them both to be in heaven and reunited for an eternity. I miss my beloved, too. He's been gone 15 years now. Waiting for the day when he will come to take me home to the Lord.

My dad loved the old ways and he shared that with me as a positive thing. I remember the old highways, they followed the old dirt highways which started in the horse and buggy days, and then, the roads NEVER cut across a man's fields or pastures and whenever possible, they followed a tree line so they could have shade and be cool. Often, a man would let a road be cut through his property so the road might come between his house and his barn, and the man might make a toll road through his property so you could pay to take a shortcut. Where my dad grew up, it was country and the narrow road in front of his house, which was built in 1848, was then the Winona to Greenville stage road. Then the Rail Road, the Mississippi Central, was laid out and a road ran along the entire length of the rail road, and Highway 51 was an improved road in order that in case of emergencies, people could get to the train wreck or derailment. The old Winona to Greenville stage road began to decrease in use as other rail road lines, and the accompanying improved road became a highway. Dad used to take me into the country to follow the old stage roads and local roads and I continued to do that when I got my driver's license and a whole new Old World opened up to me. Eventually, Highway 51, became Old Highway 51 and a new, paved highway 51 was built, closely following parallel to old 51, but when difficult places which had to be maintained regularly caused the new 51 to be moved so that the constant maintenance could be abandoned. And this brings me to Cades Cove. Cades Cove was isolated but not totally because there were two roads in and out. One was the old Maryville road which went over Rich Mountain and on the other side was known as Montvail Road which in turn went into Maryville. In Cades Cove, the loop road is a park service road and was a connection of old roads which were not maintained by Blount County or the state of Tennessee. Local Cades Cove taxes were to be collected for road maintenance in the Cove, but many people were too poor to have money to pay the tax so men would give a couple of weeks or more to keep the roads maintained. What we see today is but a shadow of what used to exist there, farms all over the place including mountains on both sides of the Cove. Most of those roads were closed when the people were made to move out, but some were able to make a deal and sell the land to the park service but were allowed to live in them until they died. I have close family in Maryville and that turned into my second home. When I was a boy, we went to Cades Cove frequently, and there were no bridges on the loop road, there were fords. They were improved by pouring concrete on the stream beds, but there were no bridges. I loved what the English call Water Splashes, that is, driving through a stream, so long as it was shallow enough to not splash onto your engine and causing the electrical system from shorting out! So sometimes we would go there and a ranger would tell us that there had been a lot of rain in the mountains and sooner or later the streams would be too high to ford. If you went from, say, Cades Cove campground toward the Cable Mill, the ford might be shallow enough to get there but the stream would rise and if you couldn't wait to get home again so you would take the old road that led to a state highway which ran alongside the Little Tennessee River. And there was even a ferry that operated to take you across the Little Tennessee to another road going away from Maryville. Ah, such were the days for me. Maybe I liked the fords in the mountains because my middle name is Clifford, which means born by the ford by the cliff. What I do not like is what the interstate system has done, by making everthing along its path the same. That interstate building let farms be confiscated just like what happened when the park service took the mountains. We all enjoy the speed of the interstate system and going to the beautiful Smoky Mountains National Park, but for both of those, there were countless families who lost family farms, homes, jobs, etc, and there was no fun in that for them. I think about that still, 68 years after I was born, and lament the passing of the old ways but enjoy the new ways because I have to!
Desecrated. Scary/Horror stories.
