A wonderful story Donnie! Thank for sharing that tragic tale. On a kind of similar note, an old story from my neck of the woods goes that a man and his wife lived in a log house near a creek back in the mountains. Being in the latter half of the 1800's the population was quite sparce, as they lived a couple miles from the nearest neighbors. The man was a bootlegger and a notorious drunkard who was known to get into fights often and abuse his wife, even during her pregnancy. He came to look upon her pregnancy with hatred, accusing her of infidelities with the men who bought whiskey from him. One evening, at near dusky dark and after a long day of hard drinking, he went into his house to get his wife. He forced her down the trail to the nearby creek where a large flat rock was, and on it was a razor sharp axe. After a struggle, he held her down and chopped off her head, killing not only her, but the 6 month old baby she was carrying inside of her. Her head rolled off the high rock down into the creek and washed on down the way. He buried her body in the woods near the rock. It was said that not long after the incident, he was killed in a drunken fight with a couple other men. After that, there were a lot of stories coming out from the people living in that section(many being my own kin) of it being hainted....of seeing strange lights in the woods and the apparition of a woman walking beside the creek, only to disappear just moments after being seen. Others told of hearing a baby faintly crying in the distant woods just after dark, and though some tried to follow the sounds of the cries to find the baby, they could never get close enough as the cries always stayed far off or would suddenly stop. Really crazy stuff!

Donnie, I love hearing you tell these stories. What a sad but wonderful story. I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. But, my moma and all her family was from a little town called Robbinsville NC. I moved there to live with my grandparents when I started high school. My grandpaw was a preacher he loved to tell stories about his childhood . I miss those days . I'm 53 ,and was blessed to have grown up in a different time . Thank you for keeping these stories alive. As parents we all want the best for our children but sometimes the more we protest against their choices the more determined they become in having their way . Life back then was such a struggle in itself and to find true love with old friends only to end in such a traumatic way. I know she was heartbroken! She just couldn’t endure the pain of her loss. How ironic is the fact that they buried her next to her sweetheart, in all the times she searched and still is trying to find her lost love. Makes me think of the movie “Wuthering Heights “ by Emily Brontë . I also know the pain of loss Love , my husband passed away last November, I’m still trying to absorb that pain, it’s so hard to get through. 😥💔🙏❤️

Hi Donnie, this story sounds so familiar to the stories my grandfather would tell. It is so typical of what the people of EK would do during that time period. My family was into making and running moonshine. There is also a family cemetery with unmarked graves in it.
