Do you happen to grasp what the "unified" is used for by marketing Apple department? It's not some unique new RAM type. It's still DDR4, the difference is it is an LPDDR4X variant vs regular DDR4 on most of the PCs (that in terms of the LG is actually as well an 8GB soldered LPDDR4X 4266MHz unit). Unified terminology should be compared to dedicated only, as it means all the computing cores use the same memory and can access its parts without copying data between two or more locations to reduce power inefficient memory data movement tasks... whereas in the Windows machine this means that often parts of RAM are set aside for "iGPU" VRAM whether it's being used or not and many accelerators even if they're storing/sharing the memory are still often employing a copy from one part of RAM to own cache/portion. The lower mem performance on the XPS may stem from both using DDR4 2400 or 2666MHz SODIMMs and using SODIMMs so additional latency giving PCBs/hops and the dedicated/preassigned copying/moving data between parts of the system. And of course the single core and multicore CISC behaviour and multithreading overheads and differences compared to the ARM approach.

@@marcin_karwinski Woah, the situation is a lot more complicated than *I hoped* then. Would using non-soldered RAM really give that much of a disadvantage in terms of system responsiveness compared to RAM that is soldered to the motherboard?
@utubekullanicisi

@@marcin_karwinski Obviously, in the video title Max tried to make the video as clickable as possible by writing “Unified Memory vs. LPDDR4 Memory”, as if the unified RAM actually uses a different type of RAM technology. Afaik it’s 128-bit wide 4267MHz LPDDR4x memory in the M1 Macs. By the way did you mean to say “the lower mem performance on the Gram” instead of “on the XPS” at the end? And what I’m curious about is that does this “expensive” memory copying require a lot of CPU resources, and is that what’s making computers with non-unified memory solutions painfully slow like in this video on the Gram / computers & phones with unified memory solutions so fast in terms of multitasking like on the MBAir?

Hey, just for my curiosity could you run the export with the power cable plugged in as intel laptops are notorious for running at half speed while using the battery. And I usually plug mine in when doing heavy tasks. Thx Edit: this will also effect the SSD.

Hi, I always used windows and recently bought my first macbook, your videos are helping me a lot. I would like to know if it is normal for my macbook air m1 (8gb) to be slow with 20 safari tabs playing youtube videos in 4k? I did this test and it was unusable, with 20 tabs with 4k video I couldn't open anything else. Is this expected for the 8gb model? Greetings from Brazil!!

Since no one replied. I've used the 8GB MBA for about a month and Il share my thoughts. Yes the 8GB does hold up well during normal use. Compared to windows I cannot say, but there were a few times where 8GB wasn't enough even during my use and I wouldn't consider myself to be a heavy user. With a modern day computing It's quite easy to go over 8GB if memory. For example if you open 10 safari tabs with nothing else running, it's not hard to exceed the 8GB of ram and you would have already been using swap to make up for it. Once you have a few other apps running in the background like, teams, WhatsApp Messenger. By themselves not heavy but together the memory usage skyrockets and your machine at that point would be relying on swap. My machine usually uses between 3 - 6GB of swap, occasionally as much as the actual memory use itself. While I didn't notice slowdowns most of the time there were a few times which I did during browsing. Namely when it came to tabs to took a significant amount of memory (some 4k videos, movie, Reddit main page) responsiveness took a bit of a hit. KZfaq videos would also start to default to 480p playback too which I assume is due to the lack of ram. All I'm trying to say here is that while 90% you won't notice a difference, 8GB of ram is not 16GB of ram and if you can afford it even if you aren't a professional or heavy user, I would recommend 16GB if you want optimal performance.

It's fair comparison. Some may say you should have done test on some Linux distro vs macOS but i'd say that ain't fair. I would buy M1 Mac mini right now, but it's so damn expensive here where I live with VAT. It's about about $975 for the base model and around $1245 for 16GB model still at 256GB SSD

This is SUCH a good and credible highlight of advantages of Unified memory SOC M1 but while impressive, it's not perfect or totally definitive since (as he says in vid) SSD performance on that particular PC is maybe 20% faster than the one in MBAir model. However, my question is more about EEC (on chip/firmware/error correction) usually deployed like on AMD and NVIDIA chips and/or graphics cards plugged into motherboard - I mean - is EEC MOOT on Apple Silicon SOC?

I'm a photographer and filmmaker... looking for a new machine... never had anything but Macs since they became essential for photographers in the 90s.... At a glance one would assume that all of this flies out the window (so to speak) if you are low on internal disk space..... so keep your files on external drives, I can live with that...... I have no problem choking a Mac with 64 gigs of ram..... the test you ran is a pretty typical day for professionals... so I'm trying to reprogram my head into the idea that 16 gigs of memory will do the job....

Why can't we mix both concepts? Let cpus have dram in their soc and expand dram by traditional ram dimm slots?
@Glozzom
@Glozzom 3 жыл бұрын
I mean I don't know if these are the best to test the ram even. Just the latency of running software is the improvement. You could use some heavily intensive program that needs all kinds of instructions, load them all into RAM before hand somehow. And just watch how the cpu is fat and happy with data. A lot of these tests are testing how fast the RAM can be loaded, and that's mainly restricted by the speed the storage can send data to the RAM, not how fast the RAM can be read, or how fast the cpu can write to RAM. That's purely the benefit of this, allowing the cpu to stretch its legs.

I'm thinking about getting the MBA M1 but I'm not sure anymore. I'm a third year hs school student (two more years to go) so you'd assume the base model is more than enough for me, but I do robotics and sometimes I have to code for school projects, not just that but I also gotta use (again, sometimes) design softwares such as AutoCAD and SketchUp. I'm purchasing the 256gb version because I don't need more space (based on the conditions of my current computer), but the ssd swap problem kinda scares me, I don't want to pay more because I live in Italy and just the base model costs $1245 (with the student discount :)...), I'm not sure about which ram I should get, is 8gb enough? Or should I get the 16gb version ($1490)? I'd like it to last all through college (I'm taking physics as major, I don't know if I'll use any simulation programs...). I'm also concerned about the programs compatibility (which I'm sure will be fine in future, but still). I don't want to pay too much, but I also don't wanna return it later to change the ram :). In the extreme case I'll just get another windows (probably the Surface Laptop 3), but I want this Mac so bad >_
