I know I can't hardly hear you honey and when I turn it all the way up it just blast the music LOL I am disabled my hand is so shaky for nerve damage my ex left me with all of the silicone ripped out of the walk-in shower walls/floor. he cut the tip of the nozzle back so big that the whole is huge and it is just coming out in oozing clumps going EVERYWHERE even if I just barely even apply pressure so I'm trying to find some tips because it's just getting everywhere and very hard to spread & clean.cannot find any denatured alcohol tonight is my only time to do it as I will have to rest my back tomorrow ( stuff like this getting in the floor _not even allowed to do as my lumbar discs literally rip open and I could get stuck in the floor- makes me bed bound due to my myriad of medical conditions, so I will have to rest tomorrow in order to be able to work Monday from home I do call center work) anyway I'm trying to find tips to be able to spread it I do not even have rubbing alcohol much less denatured alcohol and no one will bring me any I'm disabled can't drive anymore

Never use soapy water. The edges will never adhere properly. Will the joint be sealed and prevent water to leak, yes. But the actual bead won't last long bc water and dirt will get under the tiny lip that didn't stick to the tile bc of the soapy water. Just get a proper silicone tooling kit on Amazon

Absolutely right. This is simply wrong EVERY major silicone manufacturer says not to use soapy water. It is only common sense that if it doesn’t stick to your finger or a stick ,it won’t stick to the substrate. Everyone thinks tooling the joint is only for aesthetics.But it is really to make the sealant bond.

The soapy water is not breaking the bonds in the silicone. My guess is that water is hydrophilic and silicone is hydrophobic so they won't mix in the first place. Not sure what the soap is doing but maybe it prevents mixing even more.

Hum...So, I am trying to install silicone caulking to fill in a gap and bond two different surfaces, right? If there is any kind of imperfection when I lay the caulking bead (for example the bead not being tall enough it wide enough) and then introduce a"bond breaker", am I running the risk of the "bond breaker" ending up between the silicone and the surface I want to bond to? Please explain if I am missing something? Is the pressure of your finger or the popsicle stick going to make it bond again where I messed up? Is that why I can see some silicone come off at about minute 4:50? I was trying to get some tips on applying silicone, but this has gone against what I thought I was trying to do.
@wajjidmahmood452
@wajjidmahmood452 2 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you on this; at 4:50 onwards it’s very clear that in at least two places the silicone has not bonded to the tile surface due to the soapy water breaking the bond where it shouldn’t have. What’s more is that if you re apply on the areas that didn’t quite get enough you’ll never get the silicone to stick due to the soapy water. If you don’t get it exactly right the first time you’ll have to scrape it up, dry it, clean the surface with spirit and then have another go. On top of all this I’m still not convinced that wetting the fresh silicone isn’t deteriorating the properties of the silicone surface; the manufacturers normally state to not get it wet within 24 hours…..🤔
@benyaminewanganyahu
@benyaminewanganyahu Жыл бұрын
@@wajjidmahmood452 So what's the solution? I've been told that if you don't use the soapy water, your finger (or tool) may drag the silicone away from the surfaces you're trying to bond. I think perhaps the only way is to check that the silicone is in contact with the surfaces before applying the soapy water...? But I agree that the most important point is whether the silicone has bonded to the surfaces (rather than the look of the finishes) which the soap may stop.
@wajjidmahmood452
@wajjidmahmood452 Жыл бұрын
I don’t believe that dry tooling will drag or pull the fresh silicone out of the gap, when tooling (and when initially gunning it in) the silicone gets pushed into the crevice and sticks to the surface (provided the required cleaning and drying has been carried out properly) and then the angle that the tool (or finger?) helps to properly adhere the silicone to the surface. Personally I would rather masking tape a few mm outside of the desired bead thickness and dry tool it (if I’m trying to avoid excessive cleanup and make a tidier job) but if the sealant is applied by gun correctly the first time then dry tooling and cleaning the tool in between works perfectly every time! What’s more is that with dry tooling, if you missed a little bit or moved the gun too fast at a certain point you can re apply a touch to just that point where as of it is wet then you’re screwed! Also if you are spraying water onto the seal the. You have to be very careful not to wet the area that you haven’t applied the sealant to in other words stop spraying before you get to the next run that has been prepped.

50/50 is too much. It will still work fine but it's just a waste of dish soap. Around 5 to 10% of dish soap in your water is perfect. You just want your water to be a little soapy, I've used straight water before when I've had no access to dish soap.

I like the application method but use rubbing alcohol which has the same effect with pure silicon caulk as your soapy water. Reason for using rubbing alcohol over soapy water though, as you mentioned in a previous comment, silicon and water don’t mix, which is true, but when the water evaporates you’re left with soap which can prevent silicon from adhering to a surface very well. When you run your finger or the popsicle stick over the silicon, if soap hasn’t already gotten behind or under the bead from spraying , the stick eventually push a little wave of soapy water ahead of your stick on the bead. Probably little noticeable difference at first, but the way I see it, is if you have zero risk in using rubbing alcohol, and you don’t have questions about mixture ratios, why not just use rubbing alcohol since you have a much better chance at 100% adhesion. I use 70% rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle without any issues and it evaporates faster than water as well.

Agree - everything you read online says silicone should be applied to a clean dry surface and getting excess water on the silicone can cause it to not adhere properly to the surface. I am having the same issue. Warranty shower repair and he caulked it today and was absolutely soaked when he finished. Now looking at it tonight that the water has dried up and its lifted in so many places. Not stuck to the tiles. He also has caulked over tiles which still have grout residue on them. Warranty manager here tomorrow so will be telling them to pull it all up and re-do it properly. Firstly cleaning all the tiles and drying it thoroughly

@@LiljayFarmlife wrong due to the size of projects we do (often $10000-$20000 or more) the building owner often wants the manufacturers extended warranty. In order to qualify for these warranties it is required to document the installation and do testing every 500-1000 lineal feet. When soapy water is used the silicone fails a proper adhesion test.
