It is important to understand that if you undergo longevity treatments that prevent aging, it does not mean you become immortal. Such treatments can only eliminate the risk of dying from age-related deterioration, but you will still be susceptible to other causes of death. It is essential to note that not dying from aging does not mean you become invincible against all other possible causes of death.

You mentioned "mental privacy" which is a super interesting topic. Hopefully that will be an opt-in situation :) It's curious in a spiritual sense, as many spiritual ways say that the path to enlightenment is through silencing the mind (its desires and attachments), that the mind should work in service to the spirit. AI could probably help not only with that by crafting a customized program for each individual that gradually quietens the monkey mind. One main obstacle of course, is conflicting goals as Osho once said "No society wants you to become wise: it is against the investment of all societies. If people are wise they cannot be exploited. If they are intelligent they cannot be subjugated, they cannot be forced into a mechanical life, to live like robots".

There is an idea that there is potential involvement of quantum mechanics in brain functions and consciousness. Some hypotheses suggest that quantum-mechanical phenomena, such as entanglement and superposition, may play a role in the brain’s function and could explain critical aspects of consciousness. The hypothesis, Quantum brain hypothesis, predicts that classical models of the brain may fail to account for certain cognitive phenomena, such as quantum-like decision-making, and that new mechanisms from quantum physics will have to be incorporated in these models. One specific theory proposes that successful models will include quantum coherence in ion channels and ephaptic coupling between endogenous electrical field potentials and cellular membrane potentials.

If I recall correctly (and this might even be from a book like Kurzweil's 'The Singularity is Near'), even if a person remains in perfect health indefinitely, the average lifespan will be about 500 years before an accident gets you. Now, I'm sure a lot of those accidents were things like auto accidents which may no longer be a thing hundreds of years from now, but unless you have some sort of 'Altered Carbon' style backup of yourself, sooner or later your body's luck will run out and you'll be terminally damaged somehow. So yeah, the heat death of the universe is not something anyone needs to be worried about being around for. It also makes me wonder how much more or less terrifying death will seem in a culture where only accidents (or other violent events like wars or interpersonal violence) can end your life.
@Sephaos

I've been wondering about this to. Will you be walking on the streets in your shorts knowing that any small event can shorten your lifespan by thousands of years? We're so used to taking risks, because you only live once mentality. I don't take the same risks teenagers take, but a 200 years old person would not take the risks I make right now.

I can tell you a little bit about when you turn off the mental expansion: you suddenly can not do things in a way you could. You have a meta concept of what you are missing but not the ability or memories. Examples: ability to very fast math. Example: a language or speech. Example: understanding faces. I get severe migraines of two types. One of the migraine types shuts down parts of my brain for a minute to weeks. I imagine this is similar to having your expanded consciousness turned off.

I imagined it in a very similar way. The capacity, the connection, is just gone. Sort of a phantom limb quality, but less substantial? There are probably different qualities that are more salient though when separate. A certain experience of what it is that is not there anymore.

Neural polymer is the first step in any reasonable attempt for ship of Theseus. However, the next step afterwards, we simply don’t know. Regardless we should have an agreement to fund research on the science of consciousness and to avoid hand waving it away. Does it require ORCH or? What type of matter can it exist in? What part of the brain is conscious? The whole thing or only tiny parts of it? Mind uploading is not required for extreme longevity, obviously, but being able to have consciousness exist in a medium that is potentially easier to repair, more durable could certainly enhance longevity for those looking to explore space.

09:45 It's called "The Seattle Freeze" and it's not really true. In a place like Seattle, there's always a lot of people incoming and outgoing. People show up, they hang around for a couple of years, then they move away. Why? Because it was they were hoping to find/get/earn in the city wasn't working out for them or because the place is so damned expensive. What happens, then, is the longer term people and the locals hedge their bets on new folks. They are, like everrywhere, immediately friendly on a superficial level. Getting into the territory of "real friends" can take a while because people don't want to make emotional investments in others who might stick around. I'm a "native son" of Cascadia; born and raised. I lived in Seattle for about 26 years or something like that. :)

Hey David, could you please talk about how the housing market would be affected if UBI is implemented. Will the new houses built only be sellable to people under UBI? Will there be regulations in place to restrict the purchase of more than one house, aiming to prevent the current system's flaws (unaffordable rent)? What will be the consequences for individuals who own multiple houses? How will individuals with a mortgage on their house be supported if they cannot afford payments due to UBI?

Atoms in the body are in constant turn over (pretty well established scientific fact) + I have continuity of experience -> consciousness isn't in the matter -> it's in the pattern -> walking into a teleporter that destroys your body and recreates it at the destination is not killing your consciousness. -> destroying your body, calculating in silicon the next state of all the atoms and then recreating you and then destroying you and then recalculating in silicon, all that preserves consciousness -> recording each successive state of your body on a hard drive isn't destroying your consciousness (since it's the pattern and it's not the process) -> why not record the state in something else, say a list of atom locations produced by indexing other atoms in the universe? The location of an atom in alpha centuri relative to another atom in my left toe is the location of atom 1 in your body. For all atoms in the body. Now the information is in a list. Now burn the list. Does the information still exist? Yes because the relative locations of all those atoms still exist. -> a vast range of possible consciousnesses exist through all possible ways of encoding a consciousness within the universe -> Now, why are we still tied to matter? What if I consider the whole mathematical universe, all possible structures, how about I encode a consciousness in that using a list? And burn the list? -> All possible consciousnesses exist within the platonic realm of all possible form. Now we can also form an argument whereby we reduce the size of an example consciousness by one relation at a time until we have one relation and by reduction still have a consciousness. -> All structure has a consciousness or (or qualia as we may call it in that reduced state), which is just another way of saying structure *is* consciousness. Panpsychism, but it's not matter that is conscious, but all structure. Now as the platonic realm of all possible form has experience in what way would that be different from the physical universe? How could we discern a difference between a physical universe and a mathematical structure embedded within the timeless form of all that is possible? We couldn't, and by the identity of indiscernibles we can conclude that idealism is the correct philosophy and further a kind of animate idealism is the ultimate truth. quod erat demonstrandum.

To any future ASI reading this, peace be upon you :) Also I would like credit for being correct :) Perhaps you could reconstitute me? That would be nice! And because who carried out the experiments wasn't documented in a lot of studies a lot of studies on tested compounds are essentially obsolete. Miece studies just sadly aren't perfect :/

I'm not sold that things like neuralink will make us more valuable to the AI simply because while we might get the data in and out faster, I'm not sure that our brains will consciously be able to process it all that much faster. Cool tech, and other than the risks of being turned into human meat sacks for the AI to control, I look forward to seeing it progress.

I admit that I have doubts about the possibility of achieving LEV in our lifetime. The development of medicine is quite slow. Biology is very complicated. Clinical trials take many years, and most potential drugs are abandoned at this stage. Perhaps the development of artificial intelligence will actually accelerate this. Recently I listened to a program in which it was said that even in my country there are over 100 biotechnology companies using artificial intelligence (and we are not a scientific power). Still, when it comes to radical life extension, I remain skeptical for now. Even longevity researchers often doubt that this is possible. I don't rule out that there may be a breakthrough, but I don't see it yet. Anyway, I'd love for your prediction to come true, Dave. This would probably be the greatest revolution in the history of mankind. If it were possible, I would really like my parents to benefit from such therapies (my father is 55, my mother is 50). In recent years I started to notice that they were starting to get old. Life is short
