Our aquascaping podcast - anchor.fm/georgefarmer I get a severe case of crypt melt in my Aquascaper 1200 Nature Aquarium planted aquascape. Most of the cryptocorynes are melting and I don't know why!
I trim a load of the crypts away to see if they will recover.
What would you do? Let me know in the comments!
Keep on scaping!

George, thank you for uploading this video. I'm really sorry about your plants, but I also appreciate you being so honest and candid about the challenges of aquascaping and fishkeeping. You were a major inspiration for me to start my first planted tank two months ago, and I am embracing the struggle and learning something new every day. But it is unusual for a master aquascaper such as yourself to put a video on KZfaq where they show the tough days. I am glad you're saving the scape as I like this layout very much.

Hi George, I'm sorry to see your stunning scape like this. I had the same issue once with my java ferns. Had them for a couple of years and they were nice compact and very bushy. I couldn't find a reason for the melting. Cut back only the affected leaves each time I did a water change. I kept on doing so for a couple of weeks and they grew back as if nothing ever happened. But takes a while unfortunately 😒 The reason, well I don't know but if you have many of the same plants and a bacteria which the plants are not resistant to infects your plants could lead to an outbreak and the infection can take over quickly. Best of luck George.

Been through it many times, also had (satysfying me) Crypts based layout aaaand all of the sudden - melting :) To me it is not the case those plants melt only when newly planted. It is their defence reaction to the environment change. Sometimes I tried to over treat them with extra trace+iron and even that caused massive melting. I belive You didn't change anything to Your routines but as far as I remember You don't test water and You use tap water. Now there is a season change and could be Your tap water parameters has changed slightly. Maybe calcium - magnesium ratio Maybe phosphates spike. Who knows.

😢 So sorry George! That’s a real problem to not know the cause. I hope the trimming helps, I didn’t know you could even do that, I thought the roots needed the leaves to photosynthesis to stay alive. The scape does look quite changed, but moving the wood up into the corner there really helps balance the tank and it still looks great to me. I agree with your plan to give the crypts a few weeks to rebound or show signs of life and if they don’t, replace with new ones. I’m still enjoying this scape! PS. The quick clips of your little dog running through the cinematic shots are so cute!

My jaw dropped when you first hacked the crypts..because I never realise how bushy it is and maybe the scape was giving the height but it wasn't. Did any kids visited recently and poured some liquid in? sorry that happened George, I've seen that scape for quite some time now and it's always great looking.

It is really humbling to see you talk about your failures as much as your success of aquascaping even after all these years. Maybe it must be the quality of water that might have caused it? Something similar happened to my tank in the end of Dec 2017. Quite a tragic start to 2018 actually, but did set up a new tank and it is thriving now! The scape looks amazing because of the strong hardscape layout (just like you always kept saying). Maybe it is time to mix some fast growers in there to get the formation back while the crypts, hopefully, regenerate. All the best and hope to see the progress on this tank as we follow the GFS gallery for inspiration!

Ouch...I know that hurt cutting them back like that. 😯 I'm just not understanding why they would all die back like that after they had been so well esablished.😮 Now I'm scared to buy and use a whole bunch of crypts for just one aquarium. It's not bad if you have one or two plants go wonky in a tank, but for all of them, that's heartbreaking. Hello Tommy, good, sweet, handsom boy, puppy kisses for you, 😘 You keep Daddy's mind off his aquarium while the plants grow back. Lots of walks and extra play time for him. George, please do let us know if you figure out what caused this.

Sad to hear about the crypts. If we remember correctly, some videos ago you said you switched out the lighting on this tank for a period of time, not sure how long, but whenever we switched lighting on our tanks with crypts, they always melted. Even on tanks with crypts already in them we never dare to to even change the brightness of the same light fixture. That might be something to look into. Crypts can be a mystery. Hopefully they recover even better than before!

I think you went for the best option of the lot. Chances are that they'll recover. Still a massive pity. Definitely an outside contagion or chemical I'd reckon. Could be something simple like an airfreshener or furniture polish. I had severe crypt melt on my C Kompakta , trimmed them back and they are now recovering. Slowly.

George sorry to hear about this happening to you. I had a similar problem but I attributed it to too much CO2. I think there is such thing. I melted my jungle val. I had to do the same trim them to a stump. And I cut the CO2 and they came back and grew 3 to 4 ft.long.

Hey George, I've had this happen to me a couple of times too and it seems to happen after nutrient levels get a tad too high. Legit every time what I've done is just cut almost every single leaf off and up my water change scheme for a bit, and they've grown right back. But then again I can't seem to get rid of my BBA so I guess every tank has its problems.

Hi George, such a shame that this has happened to the 1200. As much as an new layout would be the easy way out,i think just cut back the crypts and possibly add some new stem plants to the scape ,H’ra Vietnam ,53b etc. Trimming down has exposed the lost root which does look good. Losing the shrimp and the crypts together would indicate something is going on with the water perameters , if it was the tap water then surely the other planted tanks would be suffering as well as i believe you use tap water for all tanks . Gutted for you mate as the 1200 was my favourite tank . Hope you figure it all out and get to the bottom of the problem. All the best, Martin

Hi George sorry I missed you at Scaped Nature in Norwich. I know shrimp are very sensitive to copper but wasn’t sure if crypts are. I was wondering as the crypts grew very lush could they have used up all the trace elements in the substrate in that area of the tank? Maybe put in some plant tabs around that area to help with their growth. I know you don’t test your water much but you could see if their are any big differences between your tanks to rule out tap water as a cause...if it’s anything like Norwich water it can change from week to week. Still a very beautiful aquascape and thank you for all your free advice your a credit to the hobby.

Sad to hear that George.... The tank was looking stunning with crypts. The crypts in a new tank will melt and it is well known, but i have also seen with my limited experience that crypts can melt in an established tank if some of the key parameter changes.. I had a no CO2 tank being running for 6 months with lot of c.wenditii tropica..., i later on introduced CO2 injection because i added few challenging plants... all of a sudden all of my crypts melted after i added CO2 injections... On a second instance, in another tank, i changed lights.. moved from T5HO to LED setup.. the spectrum was little different.. but i observed crypt melt, though not as aggressive as the previous one...

But most of the time i'm just here to look at your sweet tanks and learn from you. I've been scrolling thru the comments into the deep and there are some pretty good suggestions of what it might cause. Old/vanishing soil, a change in water from source or plants want to re-grow.

Hi George I had something similar, but it was not my crypts but my wallichii melted. Then my shrimp started to die. :( I removed the wallichii completely and replanted, purchasing from a different vendor. Same thing happened. I ended up taking my aquarium down because algae exploded within a couple of days removing effected plants and I couldn't curtail it. I hope you find the issue and wish you luck on whatever you decide to do moving forward.

I'm playing catch up with this week's videos and... It looks to me like all your other plants are epiphytes and doing well, so my guess is it has something to do with the substrate. Could be soil running out of nutrients or it could be crypts getting root bound. They have a massive root system and with so many tightly packed in one spot they are going to get each other's way is my guess.

Crypts are easy but do not like changes, even a little one. This plants love reach in nutrition soil. Maybe your run out already or some little change in tap water. To get in to the IAPLC I would rescape using most of plants you have. And by the end of May you could send good picture. Good luck with making decisions.

Sorry to see this happening. Something in water parameters changed. Definitely time to rescape. Maybe something really complex for next year IAPLC. Did you not enter this layout into last year IAPLC? 🤔

The scape actually looks so minimalistically gorgeous George...even after that huge hack....dont worry they will grow right back. On another note though...have you ever considered doing a scape like one which is your favourate in ADA Idea Studio , Poland?

The only change i saw you do was change your lighting around and then back to old set up. I have had an issue when going through different lighting. My Crypts did not like that at all.

Honestly, I think it looks way better now with the wood visible, it give it a dynamic natural feel.

Oooohhh noooo! Well, dont worry, we wait 😂 Fingers crossed! Maybe the lack of nutrients in the Soil? Do you think root tabs can help in this case? Good luck 😉
