Big update on my Aquascape 1200 in the GFS Gallery including what fish I've added, some new kit and equipment changes and various algae issues, and what I'm going to do about them!
What do you think to the fish selection and what extra plants would you add? Let me know in the comments!
Keep on scaping!

Hi all, A few of you are concerned about my male Betta, Nimrod in here. Firstly, thanks so much. I’m grateful that you care. Secondly I am continually monitoring this aquarium. I even have a webcam now set up! Thirdly I am setting up a dedicated aquarium for him soon. Thanks again and keep on scaping 💚

when i saw the gourami's together with the betta i initially didnt like the mix, but then i saw them together and it made me happy to see 'multiple personalities' living together in a similar habitat. i dont know... i guess you normally see only one type of feature fish, supported with rasboras or tetras in these types of aquariums but i thoroughly enjoyed seeing the gourami's, betta and apistos together doing their own thing!

Great video George. I almost gave up on the hobby due to algae issues. I was battling algae for several months, but I dug in and was committed to defeat it. I learned a lot through this struggle and realized that bad things in the hobby are sometimes necessary if we are going to expand our knowledge and appreciation for the hobby. I later found out that my blue light was too high, didn't have enough plants at the start of my aquarium, and not enough water changes.

Biotopes and great if you WANT a biotope, but I see nothing wrong with having all your fish in one tank if they all need the same parameters. Beauty is what's appealing to the individual eye. I love your fish combo! You can spend you limited time at home on one tank and more time for family. ROCK ON George!!!!👍💞🌱🐠😎

Was really happy that you were the responsible hobbyist and kept your fish. Glad to see Nim Rod in the big tank he looks happy in his new big home. I remember when i set up my 135 gallon planted and had algae coming out of every angle.. i had elkhorn algae and it was a pain to get rid of it but i eventually did 3 months its what it took, reduced the lights to 3 hrs a day, covered the tank ,water changes twice a week, planted heavy

Hey, this is going to be good for people to see how to rid the tank of algae. Showing the natural low risk method needs to be talked about more as people are often encouraged to buy the "cure". The long term benefits of the natural method far outweighs the off the shelf method. Glad to see you covering this. Just takes patience and some learning. Cheers

Hey George - I recently had an algae explosion in my 30l QT which does get some daylight. Did as you've done - removed as much as I could manually, couple of big water changes and then dropped in a couple of big handfuls of elodea densa (just floating, not planted), cut the LED lights. After a couple of days, I think we've defeated the algae! The elodea is growing like crazy - it's fantastic for outcompeting the algae. Best of luck! Also we have a marble plakat similar to Nimrod (called Hector) living in a community with some rasboras, CPDs, rosy loaches and cherry shrimp. He's great - he bothers no one and no one bothers him. I ordered the Aquascaper 900 (12 week wait for re-stock sadly) and the Oase thermo 600 and Twinstar lighting from AG based on your recommendation in my last comment. Can't wait to get set up :) Thanks!

Hi George, thanks for sharing this , it's always frustrating when algi appears, one treatment I found worked was a total blackout for several days, after uncovering the tank I was amazed at the growth of the plants. I know this does not get to the root of the problem, but it certainly helped with my 550 ltr tank. I finished off with a massive water change. I'm confident you will solve the problem, and look forward to seeing how you do it . Thanks again for sharing.

Good to see you George.. Glad you kept all the fish. Now you have a big community tank. For sure a forest in the back, crypt spiralus between the larger rocks and maybe some grasses up front. Also, the light looks great but maybe after it settles in and the algea is gone, i wouldn't complain about the kessels making a return 😁.. Anyway, I'm sure you will turn things around. Looking forward to this follow George! I'm going through the exact same thing on a 6.5 gallon cube. Same algae issues. Tried the Hydrogen Peroxide for three days, then a black out for three days. Neither worked. Literally smiled when I saw this video as I unveiled my tank after its black out while I watched this. I am not as patient as you. I really feel my Malaysian wood is a huge cause it's causing a heavy amount of mulm. That is sad, this is my pea puffers tank (so I cannot use snails to help unfortunately) and she loves her log. It has a hole all the way through it and I think she considers that her home. Doing a breakdown on this side. Looking forward to this follow for sure.

I’ve recently set up a Fluval 155 Osaka with spiderwood and plants. Spiderwood had the dreaded white fungal growth which kept coming back even after constant removal. All the plants were covered in a brown growth of some sort so I decided to try out 5 Nerite snails which helped with the spiderwood but couldn’t clear the stuff on the plants. Tried 10 yellow shrimp but still not much difference. Waited for my nearest shop to get restocked on Amano shrimp and took 10 home with me to see if they could do the business. Immediate difference on the plants within one night and now all my plants are green again!! I’ve just bought myself an EA Aquascaper 1500 as I’ve caught the aquascaping bug!!! I’m definitely going to stock the new tank with Amano shrimp!!

Nimrod looks great in the 1200. It gets boring to see a bettas in a small tank setup. Bettas community tanks are extremely interesting but the fact he's in there with some Gouramis is perfect. I believe they are within the family line.

It's amazing: a pro showing his aquariums also have algae instead of showing only perfect tanks. I apreciate it a lot. Thanks. Also I'm not a big fan of the tetras or ciclids there. I think rasbora axelrodi blue could be nice for that tank instead of the simulans. I also would consider choprae, kubotai or micagemmae. Un abrazo.

Hi George. You should use more algea eaters in your aquascapes. Especially with your frequent travels. Don't forget they do 50% of our maintenance. I always see only shrimp in your tanks. If you add bunch of otocinclus a nerite snails with 2-3 siamese algea eaters they will work wonders for you and help to maintain your scapes when you are gone. Along with amano shrimp every type of algea will be covered.

You're welcome mate. I especially love nerites and amanos because they can be easily caught and moved to different tanks when needed. Only downside of algea eaters for me is that they bomb your final photoshoot. Especially otocinclus like to hang around the front corners when you are taking that final photo. It can be annoying but small price to pay for that clean healthy tank.

Great video as always, beautiful looking scape. As you asked for input and if we like to see anything else in the tank...maybe some red plants? I love adding Rotala rotundifolia to the back ground, especially during initial setup as it helps export some excess nutrients while the other plants get established as well. I have a similar fish selection in my 90cm tank. 3 Pearl gouramis, rasboras, neon tetras (relocated from another tank due to being too small), a bunch of cherry, amano and bamboo shrimps and some nerite snails. The nerite snails are the ones that although great at eating algea have given me headache with moss. They crawl under the moss thus detaching it from the wood. Every month or so I have to empty the tank 80% to reattach the moss with super glue. As for your betta it might not be suitable for him. The water movement, brightness and heavy population will tend to stress him although hybrids are less prone to these specific environmental requirement compared to wild bettas which will immediately show signs of distress. Have fun with the algae ;)!

Lol my main planted "community" tank has a ridiculous variety of fish in it that don't belong together..over time I would come across many different species in the tanks of fish stores that were going out of business and were either giving away their stock or selling them very very cheap so I would snatch some up and I've created a weird mix of fish..the tank looks too damn good and grown in for me to tear it apart separating them.. You would never know how stocked (maybe overstocked lol) the tank was due to the plants being so thick and grown in.. It's a weird tank but it totally works for me.. Love the work you do.. Keep it up!

Lovely set up. Takashi always said the substrate must ideally be filled with as many roots as possible from the start, I would have less filtration, check your NO3 Fe, K & only turn the CO2 on 1 hour after the lights go on & off 1 hour before the light goes off. I also have lots of snails to eat up the debris. Personally I aim to make the fish food part of the plant feed once converted to nitrate. The snails do well with that if you have fewer fish. I personally find these things help, but I am no expert at all. Only going by key advice from Takashi & others, not to say I haven’t had algae in the past & a little on a new set up before the plants take over. :-)

Nimrod will love, specially, the cherry shrimps :D Just kidding. Have the same light. Its quite powerful so i would suggest turning it down to 60-70% and keep the photoperiod low as you have now since the soil is fresh and you might get some ammonium buildup. If you can purchase an S2 Pro dimmer. Its like 10€ and has 8 personalised intensity settings. Its really a game changer. It works great with twinstar.

One thing that always bothers me about your tanks having the filter inlet and outtake on the side, for me it ruins the view and i am way too OCD for that, but that aside i absolutely love your content your tanks are amazing and can't wait to see more. I have a 4ft 120 gallon placed as a peninsular with the filtration an fx4 and 2 sponge filters placed at the back so the entire length of the tank is viewable from all sides, the aquascape in the middle like an island for the fish to swim around (30 Neon's, 9 Harlequin Rasbora's, 6 Danio's, 20+ Panda Cory's and 2 Bolivian rams). When it comes to algae at first i had issues but then i cut back on the light hours, removing it by hand and with regular water changes it seems to have balanced out to where my algae eaters (Rubber lip pleco and Nerite snail) can keep it clean.

Looks who’s home! What does it say about me that I’m happy you too have algae?!? My 29 gallon is infested. My solution is Siamese algae eaters and Otosinclus. It’s in a window, so the issue is lighting. I’ve no plans to move it. I’m hoping the fish can help me out. Tommy and Nimrod sightings! *pets the puppy and the fishie* The tank looks much better with the pipes moved and the mounting rod out of the way. I also like the mix of fish. I’m a fan of H’Ra. It turns such lovely colors. The tank needs some bling! LOL!

I use the corner of the tank to plant Hygrophilas .... in my opinion a fast grow plant is a must be in every planted tank to help avoid algaes. I think this is the best way to deal with future algae when setting up a new tank.

Still think it looks great. Was in the UK this past week. See you're north of London. Was tempted to make a detour and check out the GF gallery but time was not on my side.

Hi George, great video as always, do you think the Tropica fertiliser could be contributing to the algae problem.

Such a pretty boy that nimrod! Stunning tank, hope you get the algae under control soon. I find frog-bit helps keep nutrients down to limit algae but I don't think frog-bit is classy enough for this tank! It would be the commoner of the tank. Absolutely stunning. How about some hygrophillia or however you spell it? Back left corner for added height....

george farmer gets algea!! you are human!! ive watched your beautiful tanks and thought "how does he do it"? no algea.i feel better now.your just like us,you get algea too.😂 thanks for sharing your algea problem with us. the tank does look better with the canister hoses in the back. just wondering if such a large water change could cause a mini cycle to occur? great videos as always😊

Thanks! I’m never concerned with large water changes causing issues. The vast majority of nitrifying bacteria is in the filter and substrate. If the freshwater is similar temp and chemistry to the old water then there’s nothing to be afraid of. 👍

i would love to see you go over a range of fast growing plants that you could add to the tank before you decide on one, just to give us a little list of plants that we could use in our personal tanks for fast growers. i know personally i am needing some fast growers but unsure what would be good.

My favorite aquarium plant is Lymnophila Hippuridoides, so of course I'd love to see you add some to the back of the scape. Shinnersia "Weiss Grun" is another option. I hope Nimrod will be okay in there. He has what appears to be a nipped dorsal fin. Love the scape. I hope you're able to conquer your algea issues.

I was happy you moved the pipework to the side/back as it distracted from the side view.... especially as that's where you spend your time viewing it 😋 interested see how your war on algae goes. QQ on your floating plants.... if they congregate around the corners and pipework, does this mean a deadspot for the water flow???
