How much would you pay to follow some arrows down a public gravel track? On this week's GCN Show, we ask why entry fees to cycling events often seem extortionately high. Are they worth the price tag? Where does your money go? How hard can it really be to organise a bike race?

I want to know that answer. I am creating a local rocky canal trail race. My guess was $20 per person. I want locals to enjoy a fun race within the COVID 19 restrictions. It is cyclist vs cyclist separated by a 50 foot wide canal.

Legal fees, renting land from the government, medical assets, insurance, marketing, politics, and personal time invested make it difficult for me. I have a full time job and can't take a lot of time off.

An amazing cycling experience doesn't have to be an expensive world class event, it can be local and cheap and still be an amazing experience, every time, and that's why I keep going back to my annual local cycling event. For that mostly voluntarily managed event I've paid about 70 euros, and that's with road marshalling at the start and finish for safety, feeding stations to sustain me, maintenance and pickup vehicles at my service, and a medal for just finishing so everyone's a winner. There's no insurance and accident claims nonsense raising the price, everyone is just responsible for their own common sense and safety on the road.

I paid $500 for an event. The key was that it is a 4 day event with great food, live music, sag support, great swag, and is run by an amazing bike shop that I'm more than happy to support. Basically a rolling party.

There is an argument that can be made that, how we feel about the amount we spend on an event, can be closely linked to how we did in that particular event. I used to run ultra marathons which would often go very VERY badly. Occasionally one would go right and the feeling would be euphoric. That feeling of euphoria is PRICELESS

One factor not mentioned with amateur sports (vs pros) is a tendency for the competitors to be quickly spread all across the course (due to differences in speed / ability etc). This makes road closures, medical support, marshalling much more complex.

I was working on organizing an event a few years ago and was going to cost me over $20,000 for 4 non-priority street closures for under an hour. Entry fees had to be commensurate, so it wasn't going to be a 'cheap' event to participate in. We scrapped it, unfortunately.

A couple things not mentioned when discussing the costs of events: At least here in the US we have a very litigious society. Everything bad that happens must be someone else's fault and event waivers aren't worth the paper they are written on. Liability insurance for events is hugely expensive. Also, unlike days of yore . . local municipalities are now charging organizers for the use of police and ambulance services. This is an enormous cost. Lastly, while I haven't organized an endurance sporting event, I used to regularly organize archery competitions. I would say that every participant should, at some point, be required to organize one event. That way they'll have a better ideas just how difficult it is before they start whining and complaining about everything.

Without even watching the video, I will answer “Yes”, certainly for some races. A certain race in Colorado is, to me, a great example. It costs waaaaay too much, IMHO, and you really get next to nothing for your money. My friends and I did the race (Pre-Covid) and while I had to drop out after descending from the Columbine Mine (medical issue, unrelated to altitude), all of my friends finished in under the time cut and got belt buckles. When we all went to get our post-race food, it was gone…closed up…nothing was there. Remember, everyone had made it in UNDER the time cut, yet could get no food or drinks..after 100 miles of racing. This was food and drink that we had PAID FOR!! We were pissed! Only the wonderful people at Periodic Brewery came through and honored our beer tickets and kept their kitchen open long enough for us to get some much needed food.

As participants in group events we also have to factor in travel & lodging expenses. So that $80-$120 U.S. entry fee plus at least 1 night in a hotel & gas/dining costs, that one event costs upwards of $250-300.

I try to support smaller, local events if possible--but even those come w/ issues for the organizer. At one triathlon I did a few years back, an athlete died during the swim--the first part of the race. I had gotten in the water right after his group, and we had to float downstream while emergency boats came. When we got out, they told us to complete the race but all the rest of the competitors had to forego the swim portion. It was an awful day but the organizers really helped everyone.

In the USA, the individual states for the Senior Olympics organization is very reasonable for race fees. For $43 an entrant gets a total of 4 races (2x Time Trials) & (2x Road Races) out in the rural areas of a state. This is typically a Saturday & Sunday. THATS A GOOD DEAL!

What annoys me about pricing is the events with different length options, yet it's the same entry fee regardless of which route you do... i.e. - less sag support and less organized route for same money.

@@daryl4841 I don't mind riding the longer distances occasionally, but for local events in particular, sometimes I have other things to do and don't want to be gone all day. I'd rather do a shorter route and support the local community than just not go due to commitments.

Here in the US a lot of the money goes to charity after the expenses are covered. But even moreso in that what you call 'volunteer' often is social groups or churches manning feed stops and getting a fee from the organizer that they then use for their specific charity events.

I was involved and observed a walk race in the last few years. The cost was over £800. Very prestigious. The admin was run by volunteers the food too. Zero skills no food hygiene at all and basically a money grabbing scam. I considered telling the sponsors who were a very well known company but decided against ever volunteering again or competing. The team leaders where guessing what to do and we’re obviously smoking what they should have been selling. Bike races seem fairly cheap in many respects like the TCR, NordKapp4000 and others. AUDAX is a lot of work and very tiny fee’s.

After organising a few (non-cycling) events, costs and time investment are far higher than you'd ever expect (as you discussed). Honestly unless you really want to compete against other people in real time I wouldn't drop the money. Especially if you could time trial it (and the route won't kill you if it isn't closed for your use).

It's a touchy subject and I know that race organizers were devastated by the pandemic; more than a few went bankrupt. That said, I think I have a voice because I never accepted a refund for any cancelled race in hopes that the organizer(s) would stay afloat. I think the entire post-pandemic (a strange term, since it has never ceased) fee structure, for whatever reason, has now gone nuts. Fees are easily double or triple for little backwater events, and that is what I notice most. Larger events like Haute Route and cycling tours have likewise increased, but the comprehensive services they offer I believe put them in another category. Personally, I do not ride competitively, I have an extensive library of GPS routes, and am able to read and research rides in my own country, so I will not be paying exorbitant fees for rides (except for a bucket list ride, and mercifully, I am through with most of those). $50 for an old guy to ride around dirt roads with a bunch of youngsters, to get a power bar, a few pints of Gatorade, and if lucky, a free beer at the finish is OK with me; $150 is not.

The only organised cycling events I've ridden have been Audaxes (and the last one was a good few years ago) and they were very cheap to ride and there was often food at the end that was so cheap I often paid more than was asked. Of course, you have to be self sufficient - carry your own spares/food/ extra clothing for very long events and find your own way (which is part of the pleasure). I've helped to organise tandem cycle rallies both here and in Europe so I know how much work it is. Our cycle club (Derby Mercury RC) organised a cross-country running race for very many years based around Dovedale (the Dovedale Dash). We had several hundred runners and all the entries were taken on the day. It's still run but organised by the local village when the chief organiser, a friend of mine, decided he'd had enough and no-one was prepared to take it on. I seem to remember that the entry fee never went above £1 and runners got a result sheet if they provided a SAE, usually in the following week. The event was sponsored by Rolls-Royce for a lot of the photocopying but I don't think they knew :)

In Canada many of the Grand Fondo events have turned into fundraisers for local Hospitals and other local facilities. It drives the price up to about $1 a kilometer. So a 160km Fondo costs you $160 and other than a T Shirt, a few feed stations and if you are lucky a meal at the end you don't really get much. Likely $100 a person goes to organization (multisport) profits and the local fundraiser. Roads are not closed and best you know the route as only a few volunteers litter the route. They often sellout which is great to see but it also gets expensive. Still worth it for me a few times a year but the price likely drives many newbies away from these events.

My experience of events suggests that small is better. I've ridden a few 'major' closed road events and generally, they are poor value for money given that the feed stops are always overcrowded/out of food, while the smaller sportives always have plenty of food and often a free beer at the end. Rode one 'major' closed road sportive where I had to queue for 45 mins to even get into the feed station (still can't work out why I did) then when I got in there was no food and the water was undrinkable! However I am aware that the cost of closing roads in the UK is astronomical -hence the high cost to enter.

30 some years ago, you could do an organized century ride for $15 to $20, with sag, rest stops, and sometimes lunch when it was over. In the 80's, you could sign up and do a Time trial, or Criterium for $20 to $25, at most. It still added up when you raced 25 to 30 times a season. Now, the prices are $30 to $40.

the tubeless tire repair is a bodge and a half!! Why not use regular patches or a bit more heavy-duty car tire patches? Depending on the hole size, these two have worked for me 100%. You don't glue a textile tape to a tire, you must vulcanize a rubber patch for it to be airtight and secure!!

If you think it costs too much, don’t enter it. Simple enough. At one point the most I paid was $150 for the Boston Marathon (2011). Since I paid $400 for age group triathlon world championships in Switzerland. But I still spent thousands on the trip and that entry probably funded all of the USA triathlon staff that came along like mechanics. Those were two rare events that were worth it, otherwise I don’t pay if it’s not worth it to me. I stick to 5k, 10k, sprint tri, and cyclocross.

Hi Si, I repaired my gp5000 tubeless with a park tool puncture repair kit and it works very well. I just clean the tire from the sealant, apply the patch and give it time to dry and so far its been holding very well.

The only paid events I ride are centuries (rest stops with food and water every 25 or so miles, sag wagons and mechanics, and lunches at the end). Typically these are fund-raisers, for a cycling club or a charity (volunteer fire departments, youth organizations, disability charities, etc) and I'm happy to pay the fees between 40 and 80 dollars or so. I don't have any interest in the for-profit events.

Yes to bad winter in Canada -35c and 3-4 feet of snow in the winter… up north can get to -50 so yes way way too cold for skinny road bikes… we do have fat bikes tho - but electronic shifting it just doesn’t work when it’s really cold!

I live in Flanders and for a local mtb event (ride one public and private property, route with arrows, food and drinks, bikewash) you pay between 5-10 euros, same for small road events (these are organised by cycling clubs). For bigger gravel and road events prices go from 25 to 150 euro. I have paid and don't mind to pay 25-40 euros depending on the event but more than that is not something I'm willing to pay (for day rides, multiday or with overnight stay is something completely else). They try to include things like some live music and so in these events but that's not something I need/want from an event like this.

For me, the Varia became necessary because electric cars are getting very popular in my area and I couldn't hear them soon enough to react appropriately on higher speed county roads.

I’m happy to pay up to £100 for a closed road event like the Tour of Cambridgeshire or RideLondon. For an event that is essentially a large group ride, £30-£40.

The worst I've seen is the Breck Epic, 6 day XC stage race (but all stages start and finish in Breckenridge so it doesn't travel like the BC bike race does), $1100 entry fee, AND you have to have qualifying results from other races due to a 400 rider entry limit.

Audax UK events typically cost £6 to £10 to enter and are very lo-fi but represent great value as almost all are run by volunteers who are fantastic. But please don't enter them - they're a well kept secret. No wannabe racers.

Re: Gravel/Unbound - I'm happy to pay the $270 (+ kit$$$!) if I can win a slot in the lottery. (find out today!) It's a charity at bottom so some of the money goes to a good cause, kids' nutrition. In fact, if I don't win a lottery slot this year I'm strongly considering signing up as a Lifetime ambassador to raise the $2500 minimium needed to guarantee a position (just so I can come in dead last!) The camaraderie of fellow bike goofs and the ability to brush shoulders with current and former pros (in the expo at least!) is to me, worth the price of a couple weeks' groceries. ..

My local velo club has a "pie ride" where you pay $80, ride on local routes, and get a pie at the end. I am not paying $80 for a pie and a stroll on what I ride any other day for free.

For triathlon I think the open water swim is a big part of the expense. Lifeguards, buoys, boat rentals. Alcatraz swim in the local open water swimming club costs almost $300. Just the swim.

One thing you have to keep in mind for some of those expensive cycling events, people are running companies to make money. They are charging what people will pay.

Off at a tangent. Back in the 90's, so when Lads Mags were still "cool", Loaded tried to organise a Piss Up in a Brewery. Found it extraordinarily difficult. H&S gone maaaaaad. Or something

I have always respected/appreciated race/event promoters as there is no show and no nothing without them. And I am fine with the fees as I figure everyone gets a piece of the pie for salaries, advertising, government fees, the whole bit. And success is certainly not guaranteed for a host of reasons--the pandemic alone has put travel on hold for lots of people--and Dan and Si, you could tell us about your disappointment over that big event you were promoting in 2020, that multi-day, on-and-off-road GCN event which the pandemic cancelled. It was looking like a lock for fun and community, then, rut roh.

re puncture repair kit on tubeless: I've tried the park tool glue on patches on the inside before for a fairly small cut that couldn't seal, and the patch bubbled through the cut once I inflated to 80PSI, enough to where the patch itself would've contacted the ground if I tried to ride on it. :\ Also on the coat hanger hack: I do the same. I can't put it in the 11 and take it off the front chainring because I run a chain keeper on all my bikes.

Here is West Australia we have the Cape to Cape.. A 4 day 200km MTB race. Entry prices range from $640 - $695 depending on how late you enter. You get a bottle opener, hat and t-shirt for your efforts. That’s before accommodation and food for the 4 days.. Oouch..!

what do you think about an ultra endurance event with a registration fee: USD 35 for 200km and USD 60 for 600km unsupported, need to have personal insurance, no 'bananas' , no 'dot-watching' , no emergency responsibility if any, only got a safety reflective triangle, and even we need to buy the finisher medal if we want to .

i wouldnt use metal grommets in overshoes, since it puts holes in them and is permanent. its better to use a shoe makers glue and scraps of rubber from old shoe soles. you can also implement that same technique to protect the bottoms of road shoes and make them easier to walk in similar to two bolt shoe soles

Puncture repair patches are too stretchy for road tyres, you would need absolute precision or a couple of them overlapped to work properly. Don't forget to use a very small amount of vulcanising solution on the exterior of the puncture site for extra piece of mind
