For me the GI are easy to draw with the added offset and a little harder to cut\fade consistently also due to the offset. I have moved to a smaller head with less offset and find them easier to cut\fade a consistent amount. Really though I could work the older HotMetals I had just fine. The other big take away from this video highlights how our personal dispersion is greater than we want to admit. Add in course conditions and non perfect lies and the dispersion can grow even more. If we could hit our 175 club 175 every time, we'd never miss a green or have a 50ft putt.

As crazy as it sounds, even as a 13 handicap I tend to hit smaller irons better than huge, jacked, GI irons as well.

It may just be that players irons generally have stiffer heavier shafts.

Same here. Im a 7. But hit the ball like a 15. And old wilson blades are what i will play this year. I can hit any shot with them. But I would have never got here without some Cobras.

I’ve been much more accurate with my Mizuno mp20 hmb irons than I was with my previous hot metal pro irons. I’m not in the sweet spot all the time by any means, but I feel I’ve become a much better iron player by ditching the improvement irons.

I've been the hobbiest clubmaker for many years, and for the longest time, I played with a full set of irons that were modeled after the original TM Rescue clubs. Not especially big, but nothing like blades. Anytime I felt I should graduate to something new, I would try it and go back. I just hit them better. I play with a mixed set of Hogans and do love them, but I'm not convinced I play better. It's more for the sweet feel of hitting a forged club with satisfying turf interaction.

Yes!! Played Cleveland HB3 the year they came out. Still playing them, but I can't take my game any further. Just started building my new set of clubs. Mixed bag of Srixon!!

AJ, I would love to see a video exploring iron grinds. How it effects delivery, ball flight, misses, etc. maybe a “digger” and a “picker” with different sole geometries, and investigating what works best and why.

My hay day in amateur golf was in the 80's and 90's Everything in golf from the ball to the clubs has made curving the ball more difficult but hitting the ball easier.

Perfect timing for me! Considering new irons this year and torn between something like the 923 HM and HM Pro or the Srixon. I guess my question is why not play the most forgiving clubs you can all the way through your bag? What’s the downside? I think on the days I’m hitting it really well I could play anything, but I feel I need to prepare more for the days I’m not 100% dialed because those days happen way more often!

One thing I don't understand is how people keep saying I can't focus as it's to big. Or, with the smaller head I will become a better player as I'm focused on hitting the sweet spot. The score lines on the 221 are 2.125" long. The JPX 923 HL is 2.25 inches long. There is 1/8" difference. It isn't the size of the head, it's the top line. If you can't hit the 221 in the middle you can't hit the 932 HL in the middle, and visa versa. I understand that looks have an appeal to certain golfers but this isn't a big versus small thing. It's a thin versus thick thing. Great channel. Thanks again.

I use players irons for the 5 to PW and game improvement irons for the 3 and 4 irons, although because of the loft difference the game improvement irons are actually stamped as 5 and 6 irons. The only difference I notice is with the players irons I can feel when I miss the center and the game improvement irons feel the same across the face.

Please look at left to right dispersion instead of front to back. Since GI iron usually spin less they should have larger dispersion left to right.

Recently gamed the Mizuno 923 HM pro irons. I found the gaps between irons were to big. Also they went miles. So I would constantly get in-between clubs. I went from 8-10 meter gaps to 15-17. My Wedge was stretched to 130 meters. Just meant I had to carry 4 more wedges. Going back to standard irons very soon.

My swing gets a little more sloppy with GI irons because I know I can get away with more. My player’s irons set requires more of a proper strike

Great content, I presently play JPX 921 Forged and when I suggest to my pro when being fit about mixing these up with the JPX 921 TOUR & Hot Metal he shy'd away from that. I am now looking at dicthing these and mixing up the new SRIXONS

What they don't tell you about the game improvement irons is they almost always change the lofts so an 8 iron in a blade might be a 6 or 6.5 iron in a game improvement iron. I personally switched 100 percent to the callaway mavrik's this year away from about a 10 year old set of blades and was shocked by the distance "increases" but when you do your research you see the lofts are all different. I almost feel like it is false advertising to say, "you'll hit it further." It isn't the "club" it is the loft. I never was much of a shot shaper but found that I have better help on toe or heal hits with my gave improvement irons. I feel my score has dropped four or five strokes since switching irons. However, I also went from a standard to a mid size grip and should have years ago. I also got a better driver. Another thing that people don't understand is as their mechanics improve, they will actually de-loft the club on their hits and rather than scooping the ball, they will make contact with the ball then the ground and it will naturally de-loft the club. They will end up hitting it further as well.

But if you check your standard deviations for spin its 561 rpm higher for GI irons, with the widest disparity between your 7th shot and 10th shot with Hot Metals of almost 2000 rpms. Also, your standard deviation for shots relative to the target line was 6.1 yards offline for 221 Mizuno vs 9.6 yards offline for the Hot Metals... For mid-irons on approach shots thats a difference of 5.5 yards or 16 feet 6 inches more offline for game improvement irons. 16 feet 6 inches off the target line is kind of a big deal for me. That the difference between 2 putt pars and 3 putt bogeys, or missing the green all together. I'm not a good enough putter to make up 16 feet on approaches...
@stevecernuto740
@stevecernuto740 Жыл бұрын
I did notice that the spin window on both tests is twice as big in the GI iron. Probably not an issue for a high handicap player but a better player won't want to give up that control.

I wonder how much dispersion side to side/front to back a T300 set might have for a mid-hugh handy caper vs the T200 or even T100 blade? I game a full set of Ping Eye 2 plus no plus 2-SW and love their feel and forgiveness. Thigh I work too much to play all the time. 3 jobs. Club builder also. May consider adding another set of T300 irons to also play, rotate with. I use Vokey wedges and or Cleveland Rtx zipcore forged wedges with my GI set. Depending on the course.

Ive been looking at the Srixon irons. Im a 3 handicap. I should be looking at the ZX7, but i honestly wouldnt mind gaming ZX5, but the lofts are way to strong for me. What would happen, if i bend them 2 degrees weak, so the lofts are more in line, with what i need

I think you may have meant jumpers rather than flyers. Flyers are caused by grass between the ball & face (reducing spin) not specific clubs. I realize you're both well aware of that just pointing it out to viewers who may not know. Been a long time follower AJ, keep putting out great videos!!

Testing accuracy with an accurate swing and ball contact seems a moot point all around. You need to test blade vs GI with off center strikes intentionally to see a useful difference IMO.

I think if you are pretty good with your irons then they could be a good option. If you struggle with iron play, you might want to try some other options.

Why not show right to left dispersion? For a good player, right to left dispersion is more important distance dispersion. I like your work as a whole and I am subscribed to two of your channels, but I did not learn anything from this video.
@EFG2
@EFG2 Жыл бұрын
Plan was to do left right dispersion also but the numbers we got was hard to pull any data from. That said I think distance is way more important than direction for good players. Tour players are always focused on knowing their distance numbers. That is why you see everyone out on the range with GC4 or Trackman to pull distance data from.

Consistency of distance is what we looked at here. We were going to look at left/right also but the numbers were too muddy to pull anything from. Since I don't cherry pick shots for data, sometimes we can't get definitive results.
