That "older" rim brake road bike of yours is about 30 yrs newer than my road bike. I wouldn't change mine for anything.

Haha yeah, "older' is definitely relative. I have a late 90s Ibis Spanky road bike that I absolutely love. Planning on doing a restoration on it soon and posting the video to this channel. Thanks for watching!

Maybe a light road bike could be just as much fun as my hardtail. This is interesting. A rim brake is just a larger disc brake anyway😆

Haha fair point! Yeah, I think having one of each is a good combination, especially when it gets rainy and riding on the trails is not advisable. I do ride my hardtail more than my road bike, but having a light road bike for when it gets wet or when I want to log more miles is really nice. Especially if you can find a good deal on a mid-2010s frame like this one, you can get super light for not all that much money. I'll be posting my build series of my Santa Cruz Tallboy XC hardtail soon, so keep an eye out for that if you're interested in lightweight MTBs!

Good call! I recently just re-wrapped with black, but sky blue would look nice. I'll have to see if I can find a brand that makes a good version of it. Thanks for the suggestion!

I hope everyone keeps buying disk so I can buy all their near new or NOS rim brake parts/frames. Have this exact frame in black and white mint conditon, killer..... better than the Aethos I had. Rim for the win 🤘🏼

Hahaha more for us! Definitely some incredible deals on rim brake stuff. Hopefully component manufacturers keep making groupsets - seems like Campagnolo is the most committed to still making rim brake stuff.

If you change out the crankset with a SRAM Red you’ll save over a pound. Get the same 50 - 34. My bike shop was surprised at the weight savings. You can also get DT Swiss PR1400 Oxic wheels if you want all weather stopping power. The rims are Ceramic coated lightweight aluminum. They eat regular brake pads, but DT makes a special for them. I use these on my RAGBRAI bike (cause it always rains at least one day during that ride). My bike is a HiMod Synapse, It’s 15 pounds flat. Includes lightweight cages, computer, seat pouch with spare tube and Co2 included.

Oh wow, really? I thought the SiSL2 was one of the lightest cranksets on the market. I'll have to look into the Red. Are you referring to the Red crank from this generation? Or a newer one? I'll have to look into those rims. I do want something lightweight, but carbon rim brake wheels in the rain is not a fun combo. That Synapse sounds incredible - how's it ride?

There's no way a SRAM Red crankset is a pound lighter than SiSl2. Around 100 grams maybe.

The crankset is newer 9010, I updated all components a few years ago. Dura-Ace 9100 shifters, derailleurs and brakes. The cassette is Red 11-34 with Campi chain (Crit racers hack for DA chains that snap).

I checked my old crankset and it is not a -2 version. So I guess the -2 must be a pound+ lighter…

I have both a sisl2 and a sram red crankset with Carbon-ti chainrings, the weight difference between the two is less than 50grams. Putting anything other than a Hollowgram crankset with a spider ring is blasphemous.

I think you're very fortunate to have this bike, all the components and everything. We all are, I guess. I ride my bike trough the german part of the alps almost every day. To work. I have 3 of the cheapest road bike from a big sport franchise here in germany. The reason for owning three is having one in spare to always get to work and having enough time to fix everything. Still enjoy a bike ride on the weekends on them...

Regardless of how "nice" the bike is, what is most important is just getting to ride and be outside. German Alps sounds incredible - what a beautiful place to live!

I've been looking for a similar year SuperSix. I have a 2021 Supersix rim brake with the dropped stays, apparently they are a bit of a unicorn and I got it for a steal, so I built it up really light with almost Identical group set. Mine came in around 6kg. The bars on your bike are 3t ergonova proteam. in a size 42 they weigh around 195grams. I have them on almost all my bikes. You are going to see most of your weight savings from the seat post, stem, saddle and brakes. Depending on your budget you could splurge a bit on EE brakes, a Hylix carbon seat post, a cheapo kalloy uno stem and a bare carbon saddle. A wheelset around 1.2-1.4kg and some titanium skewers it should sit right around 6.2kg quite easily. Little things like TPU tubes, aluminum linkage non-compression cables will shave a some grams off the total weight. Just be cautious with the stem length. One thing I find about the SuperSix geo is that it can go from really responsive to almost unruly and twitchy with a shorter stem. Ideally if you are building it up to be a hill climbing machine you'll want a longer stem to put your weight out over the front of the bike while climbing. Going to sub for updates, excited to see how it turns out!

Oh wow, thanks for the super detailed comment! Let me respond to everything: 1. I didn't know they were still making rim versions in 2021, that's quite the rare bike! How does it ride? 2. 3T bars feel great on mine, seems like you like them as well? 3. The frustrating thing with this specific model that I have is that it uses the 25.4 seatpost, which is a bit hard to find. Does Hylix make one in that diameter? I was looking at the Darimo T1 loop, which does come in 25.4, but it is rather pricey. Uno stems are great, I have one on my other road bike and on my downcountry MTB. 4. Do you have any titanium skewers that you like? I'm always a bit wary about super light skewers. 5. I recently bought a set of Boyd carbon rims - those should build up nice and light on this frame! 6. Thanks for the tip on the stem length - the stem is maybe a smidge long for me right now, but hopefully I don't mess up the steering if I go 10mm shorter.

@@UmunhumCycleworks @UmunhumCycleworks I like the ride on the gen3 supersix, it's got pretty much the same geometry supersix geo so it rides like it's on rails. It's a bit more areo than previous models and it shows on my PBs. 3T ergonova is my go to as it's got that flatter section on the tops that make it nice to ride over long distance. Hylix do make a 25.4 I have one on my caad12 and it's been really nice. Again depending on your budget the darimo is going to be a bit lighter. As for titanium skewers I've run the risk branded ones and they've been fine. Hopefully that helps.

Rim brakes are just fine for my personal use. I don't Strava my rides just mainly commute and get exercise. I think rim brakes are just fine if not wet or muddy conditions.

100%! I've got disc brakes on my gravel bike, which obviously are better than rim brakes when I'm off-road, especially in the mud, but on the road, I don't feel a huge difference between that and this bike with rim brakes. Unless you're railing descents at 50 mph, rim brakes are just fine in my opinion. Easier to work on, cheaper, no bleeds required.

Wholeheartedly agree - you can get a super light and stiff bike for the fraction of a disc brake bike, although you do give up some braking power.

Definitely discs and skinny tyres don’t mix. We all know UCI buckled under pressure from the component manufacturers and allowed discs on road bikes. The bike manufacturers were on to a good thing. especially with the all the gear no idea mob who rushed out to buy the heavy disc brake bikes

I do think discs are better in the rain, but otherwise, I'm completely happy with my rim brake road bikes. All the braking power I need and easier to work on. It would be interesting to see what bike manufacturers could do with modern geometry and carbon layups in a rim brake model - might be a really good bike, but they'll never do it.

A key part of this video and asking "Is this a good buy" is the price, what did you pay for the bike. I enjoyed the video but why hide the price you paid? The title of the video is useless is we do not have that info.

You're right - I paid $2100 for the frame and all of the components (basically everything minus the wheels). I already had the wheels on hand, but they would probably be about $300 to buy used (for Mavic Aksiums). Hope this helps!

Any updates on this project?? A super light set of climbing wheels would be so nice on this bike. You be well into sub 14. Good luck. I bought a older Trek Madone project bike (USA made) at one time- a mix of Ultegra/105… was able to easily get it under 15 pounds..

If you wanted to really up the performance of the braking, get some HED wheels from their Black series. With the textured braking surface, it comes really close to disc performance, especially compared to carbon rims.

One can easily lock up every damn wheel with pads. It's the tire that makes you stop or skid.

@@UmunhumCycleworks 1440g for a pair of aluminum rim Ardennes and the jet rc4 (46mm) carbon fairing is about 1600g. I love the rc6 (60mm depth) ones I’ve got.

Ran Sram Etap with Da9000 calipers on my 15SS6HM. Superb braking, superior to Sram calipers. Ran HED Ardennes wheels but you could install Rolf Prima Elan for really light weight wheels...

Yeah, I find the SRAM calipers to be good, but not great. I've been eying a set of Boyd carbon wheels for this build... The Rolfs would be incredible though!

Will start with one that I built myself last year - DT 240 straight pull hubs with 32 mm alu rims and some fancy aero spokes. Targeting some carbon in a year or two. See how life goes... Can't have too much in one go! Right?!

Disc brakes allow for a wider rim and tyre combination, and the latest results suggest wider 28mm+ is actually faster on most roads, and some bike races incorporate extremely rough roads and tracks which are better suited to 32+mm. Narrow tyres however are still more aerodynamic and faster if used on very smooth roads or velodromes

If you put like 70psi in the 28mm tires, sure. They'll feel sluggish alright. Put 90-95psi in those 28mm tires, you'll fly.

True, and I do like my 30mm tires on my gravel bike when I run it with a road wheelset. However, I do think skinny tires feel good in their own way too, even if they are a bit slower on less smooth roads. Both rim and disc are good!

Had this bike rides amazing but beats you up on 50+ mile rides. Too stiff too light. Sold it for a steel frame ritchey road logic and only 2lbs heavier best road bike I ever had.

Yeah, it is definitely a race bike - you start to feel it after a few hours on it. Steel is still real, as they say! I have a 90s steel Ibis road bike, and that thing is super comfortable while still being fast.

I think they both have their place. I wouldn't want rim brakes on my MTB, but I don't think you absolutely need them on a road bike. Rim brakes, if set up well, can be really good.

If the drops hurt your back, it is more of an issue with the stem height usually - a professional bike fitter can help you solve those issues! Also, sorry for the assumption here, but I do see a lot of people riding in the drops constantly. For me, I'm always on the tops or the hoods unless I'm descending or really sprinting in the drops.

Most people really don’t need disk brakes. They were designed for motorcycles, and if you’re not racing or don’t have hydrologic disk brakes it’s really not benefiting you more than a good rim break. + rim brakes are more user friendly and more adjustable

I fully agree - unless you're on the dirt, rim brakes are great. Nice not having to worry about bleeds, pads are cheaper, and they are easier to get exactly where you want them.

Used bicycles are a bargain. Rim brakes are ok; I have 2 road bikes with rim brakes and they work fine.

Definitely - rim brakes do offer more power, especially in the wet, but rim brakes are perfectly fine for anyone.

Rim brakes on aluminum wheels are fantastic. On carbon wheels? Let’s just avoid rainy days and we’re good.

Haha yep. I would say that is the major benefit of disc brakes in that you can run super light wheels without losing braking performance. In the dry, though, carbon rim brake wheels are ok. A few manufacturers make aluminum brake tracks on their carbon rims, which should be a good happy medium.

You're right, I should have mentioned that. I paid $2100 for the frame and all of the components and then put on the Aksiums which I had laying around, but those are about a $300 value.
