New subscriber! 💕 Seriously you and the curly chemist have probably just made my hair journey and struggle so much easier. I'm Puerto Rican, and in our community curly hair was seen as "nappy" and needed to be relaxed and blown out to look what the community deemed as manageable. With the naturals hair movement i was finally able to say no to relaxer and see my natural pattern for the first time. The natural community also kept feeding me lies and having me spend so much on these "clean" products, but i couldn't even get my hair to my armpits 😩 now with understanding porosity better, learning that silicones are fine, and a little water and grease won't hurt, my hair is thriving and retaining moisture so much better than years of trying to follow the CGM. Thank you for all information and help for all of us learning to manage and love our texture 😊💖

You should clarify that the study mentioned talks about the use of dimethicone in conditioning shampoos (2-1), so when they say no considerable dimethicone remains after washing, they are saying there is no build up when used with sulfates ("anionic sulfactants"). That doesn't mean dimethicone doesn't build up between washes. The study only confirms that sulfate-based shampoos eliminate dimethicone build up. So, the point is whether use sulfates and frequency or not.

I know it's a rarity on the Interwebs for someone to genuinely say "You've convinced me I was wrong" but damn girl you've convinced me I was wrong! I've worn my hair natural my whole life (mostly bc I didn't want to go through the trouble of straightening it lol) and for as long as I've been choosing my own products I thought all silicones were all bad. I slowly started realizing that I may have been judging them too harshly, and started SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWLY opening my mind to water soluble sillicones, but didn't use any products that included them. But constantly being on edge about silicones was really annoying, and after seeing dimethicone in a product ingredient list that I thought I'd read a billion times, I was freaking TIRED. However, after watching a few of your videos and falling in love with your science-based reviews and product guides, I wanted to see what you said about silicone and OMG I've been wrong about silicones for so long!!!! I have been LIED to by people who were also misinformed and I wish I'd known this years ago!! I personally still don't use sulfates because even gentle ones make my hair SO DRY even after conditioner, but this video has changed my opinion of hair products forever! I have unsubscribed from all the curly hair channels that made me think silicones were Lucifer in a conditioner bottle (which was all the ones I'd subscribed to besides Manes By Mell)Thank you so much for showing me the light! On top of that, you have made me realize that I want to study trichology and cosmetic chemistry in college, so thanks so much for that too!

I wrote this whole response to this comment but for some reason it didn't register :( I'll try and summarise my initial comment. 1. Thank you so much 2. Hair's pH is 5.5 and most hair care products are formulated with this pH to maintain this pH in the hair/scalp - Castile soap is about 9. This is more than baking soda. This level of alkalinity can be very damaging and also increase porosity. So I wouldn't been super keen on trying it - especially if you already have high porosity hair. This is my opinion though.

That’s very interesting! Until I had a terrible case of psoriasis including my poor poor scalp, I could use any old shampoo, but now, if I go anywhere one that contains SLS, I get a terrible itchy scalp. Only recently I started using conditioner with silicones in, and I’ve had no build up issues. On the other hand I still need a good shampoo to clarify my hair as I live in a very hard water area. When I was living in Australia I could actually do without any sulfates in shampoos but now it’s needed as I live in the U.K... it’s hard also to find product for my hair as they are wavy, but most products for wavy hair target thin hair, my hair strands are medium to coarse, and there is a lot too!

Silicones help with detangling my hair and making it smooth and shiny so I've been using them still. My scalp is also oily so it needs more surfactants and harsh shampoos like clarifying ones. All the gentle sulfate free shampoos made my hair look dull and not clean. Thank you for this video though. I feel more at ease with my routine and I want to send this to everyone lol

My scalp loves clarifying shampoos. I am not sure what to use for conditioner to keep a balance for my hair. What products do you use?

All I can say is that when I stopped silicone and paraben and sulfate shampoos my hair has tremendously decreased in hair loss to the point where I shed a little bit like normal shedding and my dandruff has decreased and isn’t big anymore whereas before it was embarrassing me

First off, love you. Question about silicones: while I love what silicon does to my hair, it irritates the crap out of my scalp. I suspect it’s because I have psoriasis and it traps the dead skin cells. Could I possibly be blaming the wrong ingredient?

Hey Afope, If I use a conditioner which has silicones in it, can I use the tresemme shampoo you recommended to wash them out Nd also clarify my hair, will this be too harsh my hair, I know I'd have to deep conditioner heavily!!!!

I have used silicon in the past, I have also gone fully CG ( has much as possible) .... The build up , Dandruff, itchy scalp, was unbearable. My hair and scalp is so much better when I avoid silicone SLS .. i do swim and go to the beach often so I do use serums with silicone and then use Castillo soap to clarify. .

I think at least for me the problem with silicons started at a young age, when all we knew was shampoo+conditioner. And the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ingredients of all mainstream shampoos and conditioners were respectively water, sulfate, sulfate and water, silicon, silicon. For my low porosity hair, that was a death sentence that produced a very ugly cycle. So when I heard someone say "Silicones and sulfates bad" and I switched to non-sulfate shampoos and non-silicon conditioners, I saw a massive improvement. But it's time to reevaluate! Thank you for this content, super informative!

If I understood correctly, my shampoo and hair mask shouldn't have silicones but my hair can benfit from my styling products having them? This way I can ensure proper moisture and proper sealing.

Thank you i can continue to use some of my favorite hair products I personally do better without sulfates and parabens but my hair does like silicones and I have High porosity hair and spirals curls and also some really kinky curls underneath in the back of my hair and my hair is thick and I also have some waves so my hair has different curl patterns and is silky texture but prone to dryness never looks greasy either. I can apply so many moisturizers and oils in my hair daily and my hair never looks greasy and I don't have to wash it all the time but sometimes I my eczema flairs up especially if my scalp doesn't agree with a new product which can be a hassle to clear it up and get my scalp back in order so I don't have to wash it as much again my scalp and hair doesn't like Eco gel at all broke my scalp out and caused hair loss and burned my scalp so much and caused a rash definitely was allergic to something in it so I'm still getting my scalp back in order and once again looking for a Gel and other styling products my hair will like going to try products from brands I currently use that my hair likes and look for ingredients that ik my hair likes might start useing Aussie Instant freeze gel again if it doesn't have that DMDM or other formaldehyde releasing ingredients because my scalp doesn't like them

Is silicone necessary in shampoos?
@Gabriela-hy1xs
@Gabriela-hy1xs 3 жыл бұрын
I took out silicons and petroleum derivatives years ago, like 5 or 6 years ago, my hair is perfectly fine without it, i did it mostly for my skincare, i mean i had to try it at least, it was the last thing to try because i had lot of breakouts and pimples and i wanted a decent skin, i noticed my skin improved so i kept silicons and petroleum out of my products since then, i noticed in time that i rarely had an under the skin pimple, meanwhile before i usually had more and more often, my scalp is looking better without those chemicals in the shampoo, i don't have pimples in the head anymore. I know we are talking about hair, but it is the skin routine that bringed me to change the hair products too. So idk, even if those chemicals aren't so bad like i thought in the beginning, I'm gonna stick to products i used for these last 5 years, i have suspected after a while that it might be a middle ground where silicons have their pro and cons but my skin looks better without, i have been able to keep long and healthy hair anyway, and i have way less annoying pimples. Do i need other reasons to keep those chemicals out of my bathroom door? 😂 And now there are tons of products without silicons and petroleums on the market, the market is so full of those and i have plenty of choice of products, cheap ones included.
