Are These Deadly Australian Snakes Really That Dangerous?

It's no secret that Australia is home to the deadliest snakes on the planet. One of the most iconic dangerous Australian snakes is the Red Bellied Black Snake. Despite being considered a dangerously venomous snake, it's venom is mild in comparison to other snakes found in Australia. It's milder venom combined with it's placed nature makes the Red Bellied Black Snake one of our lesser dangerous snakes.
I believe the black snake has no confirmed human fatalities against it's names, however it has made people very sick over the years. Most people bitten are trying to catch, harass or kill the snake, however there have no doubt been a few perfectly innocent and accidental bites from these snakes.
If you see a red bellied black snake , the very best thing that you can do is walk around it and give it space, as demonstrated in this video.
I hope you enjoy:

Here in Texas, I figured out that rattlesnakes know two things: 1) they can eat smaller critters, 2) larger critters can eat them. They always move away if you give them time. If you step on one, defensive bite is its only choice. If you hear a rattle, stop and give it a chance to retreat, or move on past at a distance. They can detect the vibrations of our steps and slip away. Don't step over logs or put your hands where they hide. Don't threaten them when they don't have time to retreat. Don't made sudden moves that will make them think defense is the only choice.

I 100% agree with this statement. I have never been attacked by any animal other than a human. And the funny part is, people who have never even seen a shark can fear them people say that's understandable. People who would not know one end of a snake from another can fear them, people say that's quite right. I have been bullied, bashed, and broken by people, but my dislike of them is anti-social. Go figure, lol.

Met a red belly black when I was 11 cutting through the bush going home. They do seem to have increased in number in recent years, I put it down the the wet seasons we have been having and more food for them available. They are spreading into areas I have not seen them, in numbers well above what they were, and displacing rabbits as they move, it seems. I have seen a couple of old rabbit warrens abandoned and hares now have lies and scrape in the areas. Not sure if the warrens were poisoned or not, but the hares are definitely moving in on rabbit run areas.

Great work on this vid. Putting a good message out there for dealing with snakes, and also that they are dangerous, but only in the wrong circumstances. My experiences with snakes in the bush, has been one of the snake and I spotting one another, me backing right off, and the snake heading in the opposite direction. The don't want any part of you in general, you're too big for them to eat, and fighting, as all animals know, is too much of a risk, so they eventually scarper. Around swamps here in Western Australia we are more likely to come across Tiger snakes, which do get stroppy. It happened to me once. I backed off quickly. The snake did a threat display, then scarpered off away from me. There is a risk being around snakes, but the danger is often overblown.

Hi Robbie, I had a couple of very unexpected encounters with a resident tiger snake when we stayed next to Lake Nillahcootie in November last year. Because I’d seen your previous vids where you followed the brown snake, I actually dealt with those two encounters in a much different, and more aware, frame of mind. I know they are generally happy to back off unless you’re silly enough to provoke them. I don’t want to accidentally step on one, but if I see one, I’m not so scared anymore. Thanks for your videos on snakes, because when we’re out in the bush, we’re in their home. 🙂

Mate, the biggest thing you have to fear from a snake while fishing, unless you go messing with them, is them taking a nice keeper. I have lost a few fish, trout to a tiger and a couple of reddies to blacks, in the past. The way I figure it, while they have a mouthful of fish, they are not gonna bite you 😂

@robbiefishing Ай бұрын
Thanks mate. I was using my GoPro Hero10. It's the camera that I usually use for snakes and for underwater footage. I filmed this at 2.7k resolution, and 120 frames per second. I rarely ever film in such high quality because it's a nightmare to edit. Usually I film at 2.7/30, 1080/60 and occasionally 2.7/60, which is about the same as 4k/30 to edit. 2.7/120 is beautiful to view but a nightmare to edit. This video took me a long time to edit because my computer kept getting bogged down. Haha The other reason that I don't film at such high resolutions often is because the cameras get very hot and shut down. Even at 1080/60 they shut down when filming fishing videos on a hot day.

I was bushwalking a track in summer, and I’m terrified of snakes, I came across a huge brown snake on the track, because of the terrain it was one way in one way out, so I had to pass the snake. I would of been stuck there all day normally frozen, but after watching your earlier videos on snakes I took your advice I gave it as much room as I could which was only less then 2metres and I sort of just walked around it without disturbing it and it just slithered away from me. Without learning from you I would have been there till dark cause it was late in the day already. Mind you I didn’t walk that track the rest of summer haha.

Don't be. More snakes are killed by people each week than people by snakes each year. Do not be fooled by the stories. There are very, very few cases of people being bitten when they were not actively trying to remove, capture or kill a snake. You can tread on them and startle them enough to strike, but that is very rare. I do know a guy who had the misfortune of whipping his hand back to start a whipper-snipper, right next to where a huge brown was lying in the garden. He got bitten on the hand, but never held it against the snake. The combination of the movement and the engine noise suddenly starting was more than enough to elicit a bite. It did take him months to recover, he lost about half his weight. So, the moral of the story, be careful, not afraid.

Thanks love your attitude, I’m very similar re snakes. I live in a red belly heaven area north of Sydney, and every year we have visitors or short term residents. I’ve been luck to get several videos of frogs being actively hunted and eaten. I’d love to know if you have ever found brown or tiger snakes in that area? In 50 years adjacent to the wetland I have never seen a brown or tiger snake. However I have on several occasions found and identified 2 species of small swamp snakes. Anyway take care and yes a big healthy red belly is a beautiful snake

Thanks so much Barry. I see a few eastern Brown snakes at this spot, but surprisingly I have never seen a single tiger snake. I probably see 15 blacks for every 1 brown I would say. Browns tend to hang out more in areas with lots of mice, such as hay sheds and chook pens.

Generally, they will move before you get to tread on them. I did step on the tail of one as a kid, it wanted to get out of there so fast that I hardly realised. It was in no mind to try and argue the toss. I just felt it move under my bare foot and saw it shoot off around the corner of the house. Dad got it and moved it out to the rabbit warren a few hundred metres away. A red belly black I ran over on the motorbike was interesting though. I saw it coming and yelled a warning to my sister who I was dinking. We were on a dam wall and had no where to turn, so hit it straight across. I had my feet around petrol tank level, my little sister had her feet up at my hip level and the snake hit the seat where her thigh would have been, got dragged, dropped off and headed straight into the dam. THAT could have been interesting if my sister had copped a whack. Mum would not have been impressed at all. It left fang holes with venom dribbles on the seat. Her thigh would have been a pincushion. EXPLAIN that to your mum...

I have relatives in England who sometimes come over and visit us here in Australia. They all say that they are worried about all the poisonous snakes and spiders here. I tell them that I have lived in Victoria for 48 years and have travelled, worked, and fished in rivers and lakes, extensively in virtually every state. In all those years I have only ever seen about a half a dozen poisonous snakes in the wild. I've seen plenty of spiders like redbacks and white tails, but have yet to be bitten by anything poisonous. Australia has an undeserved reputation for being overrun with poisonous snakes and spiders. Loved this video Robbie, it shows that most poisonous snake are not a threat if left in peace.

@@robbiefishing I guess the whole country has 3 or 4 snakebite casualties each year whereas I read that India had 58,000 deaths per annum as a result of snakebite. That might give some perspective on the danger here compared to other places. This is a good video as it put things in perspective. Such a coherent video Robbie. Well done mate. Nothing s#its me more than snake fear mongering. Like your self I've always been fascinated by them, but at a distance. I got bitten by a Red Belly Black just out of Bright (not envenomated thankfully). Entirely my fault, putting my hand somewhere before proper observation. But this didn't put me off them one bit, in fact I gained heaps more respect for them. I camp a lot around the Vic high country and they're everywhere. I live near large wetlands where we get a lot of Browns, but no RBB's. And most local humans here haven't a clue of how many we actually have roaming around , for which I'm very grateful. Space, Distance, Respect is what these glorious creatures need.

And good finds for sure. I wish I was this lucky when i go looking 😂 only thing I'd change is maybe wear jeans or thick pants. Especially with browns in the area, with relatively small fangs and typically a neurotoxic venom theres no pain at the bite site so you may not even realise it if it ever happened. Another thing is id carry a snake bite kit for going anywhere. Sssafe sell one you can clip on whatever and works a treat if you ever need it.

@robbiefishing no dramas at all mate. Not that it looks like you need it either but there's herping groups (here in nsw) that go out on trips too and they travel around finding all sorts. Yeh thats good mate, i see to many people either trying to get too close or just trying to kill them and its a shame, so I ended up doing a relocation course with them to allow me to work with them a bit more hands on and hopefully get some of my own collection one day. Snakes are something I grew up being very careful with, we lived about an hour from the nearest hospital in the bush so it just wasn't something you wanted to mess with. No mobile phones back then and the best hope you had was knowing how to put a compression bandage on properly and having someone to get the help in time. But it never stopped us enjoying the bush or being out in it, we just knew there's snakes out there, certain times of the year they can be more cranky than normal so you just had to keep the interaction and distance to make sure they go about their business while you do yours. I am a great fan of lizards though, ever since I was a kid they've always been fascinating- not to the extent I want to keep them as 'pets' because they're really just not a pet species of animal but love seeing them out and about. There's an 8ft coastal carpet python in my roof which comes out and eats the pigeons on my bird feeder and she's quite a big girl (I think) but at least not big enough to eat my 9lb dog :)

@sydthegoat6773 25 күн бұрын
@@robbiefishing Its the White lipped Whip snake and they are so fast you can rarely get a glimpse of them. Ive seen them on top of Hobarts Mt Wellington, and they differ in coulour to the ones that inhabit hill tops which may mean two distinct types. The copperhead loves coastal marshes and lowlands that contain permanent habitat for frogs. There may well be a highland variety on the central plateau lake ridden terrain. Tigersnakes have so many colour vaiations and habitat range they can range from jet black to brown with yellow stripes. Im not familiar with the critters that inhabit the lime stone areas like Leven Canyon, but the wettnass of that environment may make it ideal for a copperhead to exploit the natural depressions that limestone areas typically have and often flatter more vegetation friendly high altitude pockets that could quite well host copperheads at higher altitudes in theory. I wont google my snake facts so my info might not be up to date, but I had to google Leven Canyon as I never heard of it. I spent some time at Lake St Claire many years ago (Central highlands) in the height of summer, and I saw more snakes in the first hour than I ever saw ever anywhere. All black Tigersnakes on the rocks hanging near the water to keep cool in the semi shade on a scorching day, Great video and up close footage of those Red Bellys, they are so liquid they seem to pour down those holes into the ground like water. Cheers mate !

Red-Bellies are gorgeous snakes...and fast! Classifications keep changing, so hope I'm still right. RBBs are members of the Black Snake family, which are said to be less aggressive & less venomous than the Brown Snake family. Tigers are black over yellow in some areas, but are members of the Brown family, more aggro and a bite is worse. I picked up a RBB as a teen, as a dare in a sideshow. It didn't even try to bite, just wanted to get away. Would not try that with a Tiger or King Brown.

You're right Robbie, Black snakes will only resr up when they feel cornered. And they'll also give you a bit of warnig. Browns behave a bit differently, are harder to see and a bit more stealthy which is where people get into some trouble if they accidently sneak up on them. They are more aggressive than blacks when they feel cornered but for the most part, they'll nick off pretty quick too if you let your prescense be known and give them an escape route. None of them like confrontation, they just go about doing their thing. They're amazing animals.
