Over 300 NES games have been ranked, but there's hundreds left to go! Double Dragon 2 seems like it'd have to be better than the first one, right? Let's dig in and find out. Also it's FINALLY time to rank JAWS for the NES.

If y'all haven't played Jaws, you do not understand how insane it is that Jeff one-shot the damn thing at the end. The hitbox on that fucking shark is so finnicky that I was never able to stab him when I was a kid. Even when I did a TAS awhile back, it took a few reloads before I realized where the hell you actually needed to hit. And Jeff did it like it was nothin'!

He even wasted two out of his three strobes at the start! It was like Jaws felt sorry for him and just swam right into the correct spot. If you know what you're doing it's not hard at all, but usually it takes some patience as you wait patiently for Jaws to swim into the correct spot to stab him.

I don't really see Jeff's logic that Double Dragon 1 is better than 2. The latter is better in literally every way. Sure, the platform stuff is wonky but the first game's platforming was even worse. And the two-player simultaneous play alone makes it leagues above its predecessor.

Really appreciate that as we get further into this we're finding a lot more like, weird stuff that just has a form you wouldn't expect. And you can see why they might not be held up as a "lost classic" but they've got a certain charm!

Double Dragon 2 brings back such a specific memory of playing it with older family friend's kids and very tiny me needing them to jump the gap at the start of the second level for me every time. I haven't thought about that in years.

My specific memory of that game was when the game came out and having my dad call the one local rental place we went to a lot to see if they had it. They didn't at first, but called us a short time later and said they got one and they would hold it until we got there. A cousin and me played that game all weekend. Don't think we ever beat it though.

god I have SO much nostalgia for little ninja brothers, i dunno why but I LOVED that game but never owned it and probably only rented it once or twice but I still remember loving it so much. I couldn't have gotten that far in it either. I should play it again...

You know, Jaws actually follows the plot of Jaws: The Revenge pretty closely. Its one of the finest Mario Van Peebles joints out there and also stars Michael Caine.

I have a love of Jaws that i will never lose. I had a terrible grandmother who was borderline abusive and gave horrible presents. For example for 8th grade graduation I got a briefcase. Then one random birthday i got a video game. Im sure she found it in a bargain bin but it meant so much because it seemed like she cared for once. I still pop that cart in a few times a year.

Black Belt for the Master System was another fantastic Fist of the North Star game. IDK why North America didn't get the Fist of the North Star branding for that one, but it's one of my favorite SMS games.

Considering that the NES Jaws game is based on Jaws: The Revenge, the assessment that the parts are better than the whole is quite appropriate.

I think the main problem with Jaws, if we take it for what it is, is a lack of enemy variety and pattern complexity as the game progresses. Imagine if as you leveled up you kept getting new and more challenging encounters. It sorta does that already but poorly. I mean new enemy types, denser groups, more complex encounters, deeper maps maybe with actual varied geography, etc. Not just extra little sharks. It'd still be short and simple but that's ok. If it's just a shooter then do good shooter stuff.

I feel like if you would rerelease Jaws with more choices in the shop and making Jaws stronger in-between playthroughs so you need score to boost your abilities it'd easily be Very Positive on Steam.

There was another Fist of the North Star game that came out I think on the SNES that was rebranded in NA and it was interesting for its time. Wish I could remember the name. EDIT: I think it was Last Battle which was actually on the Genesis Also the bosses in this game have Warren’s spinning drop kick from Power Moves

When did the expectation that licensed movie tie in games would be a bit trashy come into the public conscious? My first console was the PS1, and there was the understanding that if it was a licensed game it wasn't going to be the greatest game in the world. Did people go into Jaws, expecting it to be this top tier videogame based on their favourite movie, or had the attitude of "Oh here's another throwaway game based on a film" solidified at this point?

I'll defend DD2 for a moment: For all the objectively bad platforming, having beaten it a few times, it still *feels* far and away better to beat dudes up than in DD1. It is better than DD1. I'm glad he didn't get to the platforming section where you have to jump between moving gears and amidst jumping spikes though... I think he would have broken his controller.
