Metabo HPT isn't the brand you think of first when you think of pro-grade tools? But are we overlooking a hidden Gem. We test the 36-Volt Hammer Drill today to find out if it's a diamond in the rough or just another failed attempt at climbing the power tool mountain.

I’ve been running Hitachi for at least 20 years daily. I swear by them. I am an aluminum jet boat builder and carpenter. Nothing but abuse and they keep on going. Just buy the more industrial line. You can tell which line is which easily now, get the brushless. These tools have seen the likes of Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt etc go up in smoke beside them. Highly underrated brand. They are produced under a few names now due to a buy out by a holdings company. Formerly Hitachi, they can be found under Metabo HPT in North America or Hikoki in Europe and Australia.

Thanks for the shout out brother. More than grateful to say the least. Your one of the most humble, genuine love for the tool, and honest channels I’ve come across with absolutely amazing informative content and that’s why I’ll always stick around here. Your videos consistently get better and better. We hear about metabo hpt from others. Saying that they are underrated and overlooked like you mentioned, but we really truly don’t grasp and understand that until we hold one of their tools in our hand. Then it all becomes clear. I’d throw metabo hpt up against any of the big dogs in the Industry any day. May not be the most powerful always but power is not everything. Thanks again buddy. Much love to you and your family. 😢severely underrated! I’m glad they are getting more shine recently… and I preach about HPT tools constantly. Just picked up the rear handle circ saw this past week, and upgraded to the 36v triple hammer and hammer drill on some clearance deals recently. My introduction to the line was using their 36v beast of a recip saw doing some demo work… and I was a fan instantly, and started picking them up. Just got my contractor buddy into them last year and he’s all in now, lol. The only tool of theirs I wasn’t impressed with is the super beefy multi-tool, it’s bulky and meh on power. If they come with a 36v version of that and a jigsaw, and grow the line… they’d be my number #1, but they are a super strong #2 (Milwaukee #1, HPT #2, makita #3, and dewalt #4)

"The big three" is like a recent America only thing. It's like Home Depot has taken over. It wasn't like that a few years ago. They're contractor grade, but they do make some fine woodworking tools, like the 7.25" miter saw. They make a complete line of nailers, cordless nailers, SDS drills, grinders, and concrete tools, and have been making them for ages. They even make a $2500 cordless rebar bender and cutter. After using a couple impact drivers I have actually started to really want to invest in Metabo HPT tools even though I feel their batteries are a bit more expensive than Bosch Dewalt or Milwaukee… but recently I had to spend some hours screwing in some metal roofs on a pole barn and I have to say the 18v Metabo that’s for sale around $100 worked really great!!! I spent a hour testing the 1/4 impact from Metabo and a Bosch 1/4 impact…. The Bosch was a few days older and had some use with it, but the Bosch got way hotter during an hours time than the Metabo and actually started to lack power/smooth functioning… while the Metabo didn’t get nearly as hot…. The Bosch also has zero adjustable settings while the Metabo had speed and power options….

Much cheaper on batteries than Dewalt, I use the generic 36v 2.5/5.0 for most applications use the bigger 4/8ah batteries on circ saws, recip, and grinder, everything else including nailers gets the generics. I recently sold all of my M18 tools, I now only use M12 tools for light weight and the Metabo 36V tools when I want the power. Right now Metabo HPT is offering a free 4ah/8ah 18v/36v multivolt battery with most bare tool or kit purchases. If you use this tool all day every day it will wear you out it is very heavy especially with the required multivolt battery. My M12 fuel impact and assembly drill will handle 90% of my needs but it's nice knowing I have this on reserve for those demanding situations. You can definitely feel that Metabo HPT is geared towards contractors as there are no yard tools (hopefully yet). I'd like to see a tire inflator, even if you want to market just to contractors; contractors to drive vans and trucks onto work sites which have nails laying around so I wouldn't consider an inflator to be strictly a homeowner tool.

I have a Hitachi NiMH 12v drill from a good number of years ago. Still moving strong. I am not sure why I keep it, it's nearly a relic after all, heh... Now I own the full line of 12v LiON tools from Hitachi, some aren't sold anymore, and some are under the HPT brand. I also own a set of 18v HPT/Hitachi tools. I didn't look at the numbers, specs, price, etc etc... I've been using Hitachi and now HPT for many years for 1 reason. Besides batteries, I have never replaced one of their tools due to a tool failure. Even when I sold the rest of my NiMH tools, they all worked perfectly. I was a professional tradesman (home construction/remodeling) for nearly 35 years (I've changed professions in the last 10yrs) and I've owned them all. I can't say much about the todays tools but Hitachi never left me with a dead tool, thru ALL sorts of abuse. So I am a tad biased and the things I do around the house or to help a friend are all done with my set of Hitachi and HPT tools.

Metabo HPT has great cordless nailers and their 36v tools are mean mean torque monsters. The power is a bit of an unchecked beast though. The hammer drill can kill spade bits. It did not give a damn if a bit got stuck. It would bite and spin almost like the old keyed chuck drills. Their reciprocating saw is a solid monster and will eat through anything and fast, but mine died when the blade jammed while cutting through a hot tub. It's power ripped its own gear wheel apart and I'm not sure if it's going to make it to the shop. Going to sell my multivolt miter saw. Wanted to love it but sadly this was the only thing that didn't have the extreme torque like the other tools. It really wanted to bite and toss wood that was remotely demanding. These tools can come at ridiculously good prices and will usually have the power to get through just about anything. But they do not have any wiggle room for safety measures (user or tool). Don't drill at a funny angle, it's torque will not give a F. Don't pin the blade, it's motor will not give a F. Mean green DGAF. Awesome tools that scare the crap out of me

What is the threading on the side handle? Looks like maybe standard 5/16 inch. Does it go all the way through from one side to the other? This tool is screaming "buy me!" Because the side handle mount looks great for my application. This version is still on their website, with bigger capacity batteries in the kit (if you can find it). Seems a little strange they haven't discontinued this version since the new "1400 in lbs" version with the sturdier side handle is out.
@TinkerWithTools
@TinkerWithTools 3 ай бұрын
It's looks to be 1/4" and not 5/16". It might be a metric size but that is approximately what it is. In terms of it going all the way through, it's a metal housing that has a rubber cover on either side with threading in the middle. So yes, the hole goes all the way through. As for why they haven't discontinued it, see my comment on the other video. They don't always get rid of older models right away.

Making a content here because I keep talking to people about Metabo HPT. They are seriously missing out. I run a lot of Milwaukee tools but I've been adding Metabo HPT tools little by little so much that the impact driver is my daily driver so is the 6 and 1/2 in circular. That saw is my main saw because it cuts deeper than 7 and 1/4. And is lighter. My 10 inch miter saw that's cordless is Metabo HPT even though I have the option to go with a 10 inch Milwaukee. because of its hybrid feature where I can plug the Metabo HPT into the wall outlet. There's a lot of things that Metabo HPT does right when it comes to the core tools and especially in the 36 volt line, which I think there should be really pushing out more in the United States. So I really think that people really need to look over this. I've also imported their refrigerator from and a limited edition impact driver which I lost unfortunately. So I'm crying myself to sleep.

As far as I have heard - they are known to have been pretty reliable for their prices, compared to others, but that is all about it, neither very technological nor powerful. But we have a couple of brushless 18V Hitachi combo-drill drivers, the 18V triple-hammer impact and the 18V multi-tool and are very pleased with them, they have done tons of work and not a single issue whatsoever. Recently I bought the 36V 165mm circular saw, the 36V Recip Saw and the 36V 1/2" Router - and I am very impressed by them so far. And it is not just the power, the quality and the precision of the craftsmanship is second to none. Very nice reviews by the way! :)

I don’t think many people know that HPT stands for Hitachi Power Tools. Hitachi used to be very well known in the trades until Milwaukee started to pretty much dominate.

I think that is the fault of the company themselves. The name change makes such little sense to me. The tools are great but the marketing and name choice is what I struggle with.

I seriously don't wanna sound like a fanboy quote unquote I'm not i love all brands but please hear me out.. please! Ok so the text you did with the Milwaukee was with a 5ah battery correct? I know from person experience and several videos that the 5.0 does not have the power it drops to under 14v under heavy applications like the bigger bits. But the 8.0 ho battery which is the same as the matabo 4ah batteries all im asking is for you to show the true power of this five year old drill 🤔 thanks 😊

I don't currently have an 8ah so we will have to make do with the 6 at some point in the future. While I think it will improve, it doesn't make the Metabo HPT any less impressive.

@@TinkerWithTools no it doesn't and that was not my point this matabo is for its price honestly the best value I agree 100% but my quarrel was in testing sometimes the results get a bit under rated when not using the correct batteries in high draw tools its kinda like putting a 2ah on a saw its gonna work but you will get 30%to 50% better results with high draw tools I dont mean to me rude man I absolutely love your channel but you know as well as I do if you would have pot the 6.0 on the Milwaukee and did the same test with the makita you will not need to drop to speed 1 on the Milwaukee its gearing is perfect for roughout no other saw compares with how compact and how much roughout holes in second gear this 2804-20 i have a video in a log lmao it sucks but you can clearly see Milwaukee win bottom line is 2804-20 has to have a 6.0 or greater for true power..... thanks for even responding I appreciate all you do and for giving my personal friend Brandon a shout out on his channel IMPACT TOOL NATION GUYS CHECK HIM OUT 👏 🙌 AWESOME GUY GRAET CONTENT AS WELL AS TINKER WITH TOOLS MUCH RESPECT BRO AMD ANOTHER TO {SHOUTOUTS TO ROBERT WITH TOOLS AND TACTICS AND ROBERT HAHAHA WITH TOOLS WITH soAlz}

With that said they have a very small line of tools no system to transport tools with that said watch forthewin the saw did very poorly so im not getting into this line but yes great deals very good drill impact but battery size and several other features just turn me off and when you drop that tool and the handel breaks off inside of the actual casing of the tool can be very bad and leave the tool not usable...

They have a small line compared to some of the bigger brands but they have brought several tools to market ahead of other major tool brands which is intriguing to me. They have the half inch router than runs on their 36v line that is really impressive. They aren't without fault by any means. While running a single platform has benefits, I think there are great tools to be found in many lines and this drill quickly rose up my ranking.

One of the biggest tool brands in the world. They make tools for both pros and non pros. Their line up with tools are similar to Makitas(which have the biggest line up of all). U Americans probably just got the short hand of the stick. Most youtubers in america is on about Flex vs this and Flex vs that. Flex aint s h i t compare to Metabo HBT/Hikoki or any of the big toolbrands for that matter

@TinkerWithTools
@TinkerWithTools Жыл бұрын
I think the obsession from flex is just how much they are currently marketing it here, and the fact that their tools truly are powerful. I have never felt that they are superior in refinement but in power they are right up there with the big american brands like MIlwaukee and Dewalt. Metabo HPT doesn't get a lot of love and their marketing and branding choices haven't helped them. The switch from Hitachi to Metabo HPT when there was already Metabo out there wasn't executed all that well, but the tools do speak for themselves. I also think they innovate in areas that other brands don't yet, like their 1/2" router. That thing is impressive.

@@TinkerWithTools MIlwaukee hasnt been an American company for 20 years though. Regarding Flex the power comes from mainly the pouch batterys. without them they get beaten by a lot of brands in power. The stacked lithium might be the future and yes Flex has an advantage there. The poor line up makes me think its just a guinea pig company for Chervon. And the name Chervon its just to confuse Americans thinking it is Chevron and and not another Chinese company
