***
In this video, I discuss the role that personality has in determining performance and fitness. For example, extroverts are typically in better shape as compared with introverts. This is because many activities that get you in shape are also social in nature!
But it goes deeper than that. For example: did you know that introverts also have slower reaction speeds, on average? But that they make fewer mistakes when responding?
An even more interesting dichotomy is the “warrior vs worrier.” Warrior’s being those people with lower levels of dopamine and worriers being those with higher levels. Worriers are also sometimes referred to as “strategists,” which is a little more flattering.
It’s reductive to attempt to simplify a personality to a few “types.” But these can be useful frameworks for understanding ourselves better. And knowing ourselves better is a highly effective strategy for getting more from our training.
I hope you found this interesting, guys! Let me know a bit about yourselves in the comments. Are you an introvert or extrovert? Warrior or worrier? What’s your Myers-Briggs type? Thanks for watching!

My friend has a theory on extroversion and introversion that I've found useful in my life. Everyone expends energy being around people when they're watching what they say and do, and everyone gains energy being around people where they feel safe to just be themselves. This helped me realize that some situations were gonna be draining, not because of some flaw in me, but because that group hasn't yet made me feel safe to just be myself. Other situations that I might have turned down, because I was too exhausted, I jumped on because I knew I'd feel good with that group.

In my experience as an introvert, I’ve found while I do enjoy talking to people and hanging and even going to parties and events but only when theres minimal drama. If its a very drama filled group I’m done and out the door before its hardly begun. I have a friend who’s similar personality wise except that he’s very extroverted and his drama tolerance is considerably higher than mine. So I’ve begun to see it more as drama tolerance at least in some aspect

The science of epigenetics is undoing the entire idea of introvert vs. extrovert. Nature vs. nurture. Genetics vs. conditioning. We now know it's ALWAYS both. Genetics cannot express itself without feedback from the environment. But at the same time, genetic expression directly changes our environment. Why is this important? I'm always in my head. Have racing thoughts. Love reading and training alone. I talk enough that it drives people crazy, but they are also entertained. I enjoy my time in my room at home in the quite most days. But I feel most alive on stage, leading groups, yapping and having fun with others. And as soon as I get under high stress, EVERYTHING kicks up even higher. It's a rush. Lightning reflexes. Context switching on high. Can't feel burns or cuts. But I need cool and quiet afterwards. There are lot of people like me. Why? Because the environment effects us continually and the body/brain constantly adapts. We have personality traits conditioned in early childhood. We also have strong genetic predispositions. Environments remolds our brains. Our brains remold our environment...all at the same time. Like Bioneer says...it's far more complex than we understand. You will lean one way or the other, warrior or strategist. You will flow back and forth between the two throughout your life...AND throughout your day. Don't define yourself. Instead, seek to understand yourself and where you are moment to moment...and use each moment to the fullest. N=1!!!

I really appreciate this vid man. I am on the extreme end of introversion and neuroticism. According to the big five personality dimensions, that basically means I am not sensitive to positive emotions at all, but highly sensitive to negative emotions. I overthink. I struggle through a lot. After a training session where I blacked out (I hadn't eaten recently enough) I went home and cried. I felt so out of place, so embarrassed. I have been trying to really get into fitness, but honestly I don't enjoy it. I don't enjoy my plateaus or slow progress. I had been excluded or bullied, sometimes even by family, for a lack of interest in physical pursuits. I guess that really got to me on a deep level. I still feel out of place at the gym, despite studying to be a trainer. Guess I just needed to get my thoughts on this out on paper. I really appreciate you and the work you do, and seeing that someone I admire tremendously is similar to me in some significant ways is encouraging.

I typically don't want to go out and socialize or participate in events, but I force myself to go out and also to attend a local mma gyms classes. When I'm there I enjoy it and chastise myself for wanting to chicken out. I find myself stuck in my own head alot of the time, not being satisfied with who I am, or how I handled a situation. Recently got some advice from a fitness influencer, he said "don't think, just do" wich basically comes down to don't let your own mind talk you out of something, just go for it, even if it is uncomfortable. So I'd say I am a "Strategist" type

I have mixed traits of introvert and extrovert. My social battery doesn't run out much, but I don't actively go and talk to new people. Most of my friends are either people who talked to me first or friends of my then already existing friends. I love chatting with people, but I can easily spend hours in silence all by myself with my thoughts. If I don't know you and you start a conversation with me, more often than not, I'll be more than happy to keep it going. It's interesting to think how this can affect my fitness journey.

You can still be introverted even if you talk a lot, it’ll just be around people your comfortable with. And if extroverted, you can be pretty closed lipped if something isn’t peaking your interest. The traditional system from Carl Jung implies you’re only one or the other, but the human will and consciousness allows us to override natural behaviors when the situation calls for it. I’m not sure about the “ambivert” thing. And you have to separate the behavioral from the cognitive. We can behave however we choose, but our thoughts and “default” settings are assumed to be set, thus the wide plethora of personalities we see in people. Even individuals in the same cognitive type aren’t one in the same!
@almazingsk8er
@almazingsk8er Жыл бұрын
I also consider myself a mixture of both, but in a different way. In large groups, my social battery drains very quickly. I like starting conversations with new people individually, and that is usually how I survive at parties. Find a new person to talk to individually for a while. I am always the first person to head home, though, and usually need a day or two alone to recover. I love people, don't really mind small talk, but big groups impact me heavily. Thanks for sharing your experience!

You always do good stuff, but for me this is one of your most interesting and powerful videos. As someone who strongly identifies as an introvert, hearing someone attempt to break down the introvert=shy stereotype is great to hear, as is considering the different ways and types of training to suit our personality types. Can't think of anyone else who would consider this as part of a fitness channel - keep it up! One book I've found really helpful if you're an introvert is called Quiet: the power of the introvert in a world that won't stop talking, by Susan Cain. If you haven't already read it, I highly recommend it!

Infj as well (consequently a strategist). Don't wish to be a warrior. A strategist is cool as well. While warriors get in the trenches, they aren't able to see the big picture the way a strategist can. Battles are won by both working together, NOT warriors randomly running blindly I to battle with no plan.

@@Spladoinkal I agree with you, and I also think that some of the best fighters are really a mix of warrior and strategist. Sure you can more of one type, but you can also look to understand others side and apply some of its strengh. I also think that some of the best warriors really rely on strategy, like Batman. I can also say that I’m currently playing Sekiro, and it’s one hell of a hard game, and without proper thing strategy, you won’t get anywhere.( for those that don’t know, in sekiro you play as a samurai, and in order to beat your enemies you must break through their guard, and here is the thing, if you attack all the time you will be defeated, and if you only rely on your reflexes to evade and defend every attack, enemies will recover their stamina, so you really need reflexes+strategy)
@Spladoinkal
@Spladoinkal Жыл бұрын
@@joaotanaka3071 Well said! I agree. If you're naturally a strategist, you should take some time getting in the ring/battlefield and if you're a warrior, you should take time to plan strategies and see how they turn out. That's what got me into fitness in the first place! I do I.T. for a living as well as have a business making music and do gaming as a hobby. Most of my stuff was very sedentary so I started working out, and as I learned more and more about fitness, I started loving the science of it. Sure you can just go run/play a sport/grab some weights and learn the lifts but I was intrigued to learn more about it. I was able to then incorporate things I learned from fitness into other aspects like training reaction speed in FPS games for instance, or using what I learned about lifting weights to help develop better chops on the drums.

I'm an INTJ. Leaning towards strategist though I seem to have some Warrior traits ( based on past performance). I think you needn't worry about being a Strategist. Fantastic Video. I was always a worrier, allowing unsubstantiated negative conclusions to decide my emotive outcome regarding any situation that I faced in everyday life. When I worry about somebody else, its even worse, as the matter is out of my hands and control. I will definitely read the article furthering these interesting topics discussed here and apply them.
